Body weight and the prevalence of chronic diseases.

The relation between body mass index and prevalence of 17 chronic diseases or groups of diseases was analysed using data from the 1983 Italian National Health Survey, based on a sample of 72,284 individuals aged 15 or over randomly selected within strata of geographical area, size of place of residence and of household in order to be representative of the whole Italian population. The prevalence of diabetes was directly and strongly related to body weight (age-adjusted relative risk estimates being 1.5 for overweight and 2.7 for obese men compared with normal weight individuals; 1.6 and 2.4 fo…

Tending to the musculoskeletal problems of obesity.

When an overweight or obese patient complains of musculoskeletal problems such as knee or back pain, it may be an oversimplification to say that the excess weight caused the problem and that losing weight will solve it. Nevertheless, weight loss can help and is worthwhile for cardiovascular health and other reasons.

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis in obesity: a reversible condition.

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis is a rare complication of obesity with laboratory and histological features indistinguishable from alcoholic hepatitis. Three patients with 50-60% overweight and steatohepatitis are reported. All responded with normalization of the biochemical and/or histological changes after modest weight reduction.

Association between body composition and bone mineral density in young and middle-aged adults.

In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to explore the correlation between body composition and bone mineral density (BMD) in young and midd … study participants were categorized into three groups: normal weight (18.5 kg/m² ≤ BMI < 24 kg/m²), overweight (24 kg/m² ≤ BMI < 28 kg/m²), and obese (BMI ≥ 28 kg/m²). One-way ANOVA was employed to assess differences among the three groups. The relationship between BMI and BMD was analyzed using multiple regression models along with natural cubic spline mode …

The influence of obesity on the risk and severity of obstructive sleep apnea in referred prepubescent children.

UNLABELLED: Childhood obesity is a growing global concern linked to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Though adenotonsillar hypertrophy is a ri … popnea index (AHI). BMI-z was calculated and categorized. A total of 645 children (17% obese, 13.2% overweight) were included with 70.9% having OSA. Obesity was significantly associated with severe OSA (OR = 6.90; 95% CI 3.70-12.85; p < 0.001), independent of tonsillar hypertrophy. A significant, dose-dependent correlation between BMI-z and AHI was observed …

The Triple Burden of Malnutrition among Children and Adolescents in Indonesia during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Narrative Review.

Children and adolescents in Indonesia are experiencing the triple burden of malnutrition (TBM), resulting from an increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity paired with persistent undernutrition and anemia. The extent to which the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) further exacerbated TBM within this group, because of lifestyle changes and increased food insecurity, has not been well documented. This narrative review aimed to fill that gap by exploring components of TBM (i.e., undernutrition, anemia, and overweight and obesity), its determinants (e.g., diet), and related nutrition polici…

BMI Normalization Is Associated With Lower Risk of Progression to Type 1 Diabetes, Primarily in Youth.

OBJECTIVE: Elevated BMI is associated with increased risk of progression to stage 3 type 1 diabetes (T1D). We tested whether normalization of BMI is associated with lower stage 3 risk among autoantibody-positive individuals with overweight or obesity. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We studied 833 autoantibody-positive participants in the TrialNet Pathway to Prevention study with overweight or obesity at baseline. Cumulative incidence of stage 3 T1D was evaluated using Cox proportional hazards models. Reported P values were adjusted for baseline age, BMI z score, and T1D stage, unless otherwise …

Outcomes of primary total hip arthroplasty using dual mobility cups across body mass index categories: a multi-centric cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Performing a total hip arthroplasty (THA) in obese patients is known to be associated with an elevated rate of complications. The use of dual mobility cups (DMC) has already been proven for decreasing dislocation episodes in high-risk populations. This is an observational cohort study evaluating the functional and radiological outcomes of DMC across BMI categories namely healthy, overweight and obese populations. METHODOLOGY: This is a retrospective multi-centric study of 419 patients who underwent a primary THA with a DMC (THA-DMC) from 2006 to 2022. The patients were divided i…

Intervention to optimise body mass index in adolescents and address the triple burden of malnutrition-the Ntshembo (Hope) trial in rural and urban South Africa study: a study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: South Africa faces a complex health burden with burgeoning non-communicable diseases against a background of prevalent infection. The triple burden of malnutrition, comprising undernutrition alongside overweight/obesity and micronutrient deficiencies, is widespread and imposes risks for non-communicable diseases along the life course, especially among adolescent girls. We hypothesise that, by optimising nutrition and body mass index (BMI) of at-risk adolescent girls, we can realise a triple return on investment: improved nutritional status, reduced metabolic risk, and moderated p…

Association between BMI and increased time-to-pregnancy in planned pregnancy couples: a cohort study in Guangzhou, China.

BACKGROUND: This study examines the relationship between overweight and obesity and fertility in the context of China's fertility. Given the inconsistent results in previous research, which mostly focused on females, our study targets couples in Guangzhou. We investigate the relationship between Body Mass Index (BMI) and time-to-pregnancy (TTP) to provide evidence-based strategies for enhancing reproductive outcomes in China. METHODS: This cohort study, utilizing the National Free Pre-pregnancy Checkups Project (NFPCP), employs a Cox regression model to assess the associations between differe…
