Community's knowledge and perceptions about filarial elephantiasis and hydrocele in coastal Orissa, India.

This study assesses people's knowledge and perceptions on transmission, prevention and eradication of elephantiasis and hydrocele, common manifestations of chronic lymphatic filariasis (LF). The assessment was done during mass drug administration (MDA) of the programme to eliminate LF in the State of Orissa, India. A household survey with pre-tested interview questionnaire was conducted in four LF endemic districts of Orissa state, India, where the MDA has been taken place. The sampling units (clusters of households) of the household survey are taken based on (1) urban/rural and (2) type of or…

Women's perceptions of events impeding or facilitating the detection, investigation and treatment of breast cancer.

An integrated network is currently being implemented in the province of Quebec in order to improve the cancer care continuum. In this context, formal trajectories for cancer patients through healthcare services are being established. The investigation of patients' perceptions of the healthcare continuum is essential as it allows us to identify the issue of continuity/discontinuity of health services. In addition, patients' perceptions of continuity of cancer care should be documented since they could influence the implementation of optimal trajectories through the healthcare services. An explo…

Homelessness and mental illness: a literature review and a qualitative study of perceptions of the adequacy of care.

BACKGROUND: Homelessness and mental illness together confer significant morbidity and mortality because of physical health problems. Healthcare provision is undergoing significant review, and, as part of the Department of Health's policy reforms, the service user's view is central to the future restructuring of NHS services. MATERIAL: A literature review of homeless service users' perceptions of services for homeless mentally ill people was supplemented by a qualitative in-depth survey of 10 homeless people. This article reports on their views about the services they receive. Mismatch between…

Puberty and physical self-perceptions of competitive female figure skaters: an interdisciplinary approach.

This study considered the interrelationships among biological maturation and its physical correlates, social physique anxiety, and appearance-related physical self-perceptions in 113 adolescent female figure skaters participating in solo (n = 73) or partner contexts (n = 40). Participants were interviewed about their menarcheal status, underwent a battery of anthropometric measurements, and completed the Physical Self Description Questionnaire and the Social Physique Anxiety Scale. Menarcheal status was a stronger correlate of physical self-perceptions than age. A combination of biological and…

Perceptions of a South African schizophrenia population with regards to community attitudes towards their illness.

BACKGROUND: With the worldwide shift towards a more community-based psychiatric service delivery approach, stigma and the issues surrounding it have received much attention. However, very little South African data exist and the aim of our study was therefore to investigate the experience of internalized stigma in a South African schizophrenia population with specific emphasis on abuse as a form of stigmatization. METHODS: A total of 100 subjects at various stages of schizophrenic illness were subjected to a the Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness scale (ISMI) that was modified to include si

Visual perception and interception of falling objects: a review of evidence for an internal model of gravity.

Prevailing views on how we time the interception of a moving object assume that the visual inputs are informationally sufficient to estimate the time-to-contact from the object's kinematics. However, there are limitations in the visual system that raise questions about the general validity of these theories. Most notably, vision is poorly sensitive to arbitrary accelerations. How then does the brain deal with the motion of objects accelerated by Earth's gravity? Here we review evidence in favor of the view that the brain makes the best estimate about target motion based on visually measured ki

The wealthy get healthy, the poor get poorly? Lay perceptions of health inequalities.

Research repeatedly identifies an association between health and socio-economic status-richer people are healthier than poorer people. Richa … qualities is central to his thesis. However, relatively little empirical work has explored such lay perceptions. We attempt to address this gap by exploring how people see inequality, how they theorise its impact on health, and the extent to which they make personal and social comparisons, by drawing on 14 focus group discussions in Scotland and the north of …

Perception of facial and vocal affect by people with schizophrenia in early and late stages of illness.

BACKGROUND: Emotion recognition impairments have been demonstrated in schizophrenia, but few studies have examined whether these reflect generalised or specific perceptual deficits or are associated with illness course. AIMS: To examine the nature of emotion recognition abnormalities in patients with schizophrenia at different stages of illness. METHOD: We examined the performance of 50 in-patients with early-stage schizophrenia, 50 with chronic schizophrenia and 50 healthy controls on the Benton Facial Recognition Test, Facial Emotion Recognition Test and Voice Emotion Recognition Test. Parents' perceptions of pediatric day surgery risks: unforeseeable complications, or avoidable mistakes?

A decline in people's trust of the US health care system has been documented. But do parents of pediatric patients have specific safety worries? If so, what are they? And what cultural factors inform them? To help answer these questions, in San Diego 35 English- and Spanish-speaking parents' (or guardians') self-reports of perceptions of their child's risk for experiencing a medical error during day surgery were collected using open-ended rapid assessment interviews, and analyzed using qualitative content analysis methods. (The innovative data collection and analysis protocol is described so a…

Substantial changes in life: perceptions in patients with newly diagnosed advanced cancer and their spouses.

There are few studies on patients' perceptions of their situation after being recently diagnosed with an advanced gastrointestinal cancer and those of their spouses. Fourteen patients and their spouses were interviewed separately. The interviews were analyzed using a phenomenographic approach. The analysis indicated that the response categories for patients and spouses were roughly the same, but the number of patients and spouses who made statements differed between categories. All informants perceived substantial changes in life. This included negative physical, mental, and practical changes …

Patients' perceptions of recovery after exposure of impacted teeth with a closed-eruption technique.

This prospective study evaluated patients' perceptions of recovery after surgical exposure of impacted teeth treated with a closed-eruption surgical-orthodontic technique. Twenty-nine patients (16 female, 13 male; mean age, 16 +/- 2.8 years) were given a health-related quality of life questionnaire to be completed each postoperative day (POD) for 7 days. The questionnaire was designed to assess the patient's perception of recovery: pain, oral function, general activity, and other parameters. The impact of possible predictor variables, such as age, sex, length of surgical procedure, tooth locat…

Perceptions of health-related quality of life of men and women living with coeliac disease.

BACKGROUND: A central question in evolutionary parasitology is to what extent ecology impacts patterns of parasitism in wild host populations. In this study, we aim to disentangle factors influencing the risk of parasite exposure by exploring the impact of sleeping site ecology on infection with ectoparasites and vector-borne hemoparasites in two sympatric primates endemic to Madagascar. Both species live in the same dry deciduous forest of northwestern Madagascar and cope with the same climatic constraints, they are arboreal, nocturnal, cat-sized and pair-living but differ prominently in slee

Adolescent perceptions of the National Lottery and scratchcards: a qualitative study using group interviews.

Recent research has consistently shown that a small but significant minority of youth engage in illegal lottery and scratchcard gambling. It is clear that most adolescents experience few gambling-related problems as a result of lotteries and scratchcards. However, it is less clear how gambling may be affecting them at a more general level. The present study set out to examine in more detail the perceptions identified in a previous survey. The study provided an opportunity for the participants to articulate and outline what they thought were the most salient issues through the use of semi-struc…

Patients' perceptions of what makes genetic counselling effective: an interpretative phenomenological analysis.

Little is known about what makes for effective genetic counselling. Helping counselees adjust to their genetic situation is highlighted as a goal in most definitions of genetic counselling, but the processes involved in this are less clear. The current investigation focused on counselees' perceptions of their genetic consultation as a possible influence on adjustment. Participants were all attending a Regional Genetics Clinic in the UK for the first time and were being seen for a variety of reasons. Transcripts of the interviews were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Bei…
