PURPOSE: To demonstrate the usefulness of spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) in investigating the evolution of the retinal outer lesions seen in acute macular neuroretinopathy (AMN).
METHODS: A 32-year-old woman presented with a 1-day history of paracentral dark spot in the left eye, preceded by a flulike illness. A full ophthalmologic examination, color vision, visual field examination, and conventional imaging of the retina were done. Scanning laser ophthalmoscopic infrared imaging and SD-OCT of the macular region were performed.

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a genetically and pathogenetically heterogeneous group of disorders of which at least 11 types have been described. All are connective tissue disorders characterized by defects of the skin, ligaments and blood vessels with the clinical spectrum ranging from innocuous findings to lethality. BACKGROUND: Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) results from a germline mutation in the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) gene on chromosome 5q21. The extracolonic manifestations of FAP include pigmented ocular fundus lesions (POFLS), cutaneous cysts, osteomas, occult radio-opaque jaw lesions, odontomas, desmoids, and extracolonic cancers. POFLS are present at birth in about 80% of patients with FAP and are excellent clinical congenital markers for the disease. We studied the distribution of POFLS by number and APC mutation in families of the Johns Hopkins Polyposis Registry.

Survival curves were determined for several human diploid fibroblast strains treated with mitomycin-C (MMC) with or without concomitant incubation with superoxide dismutase (SOD). These included cells from patients with Fanconi's anemia (FA), dyskeratosis congenita (DC) a disorder related to FA, Gardner's syndrome (GS) and xeroderma pigmentosum grop C (XPC). Keratoconjunctivitis sicca, conjunctival scarring, fibrosis, metaplasia, and shrinkage developed in 27 patients as an adverse reaction to practolol. Rashes, nasal and mucosal ulceration, fibrous or plastic peritonitis, pleurisy, cochlear damage, and secretory otitis media also occurred in some cases. Three patients suffered profound visual loss though most retained good vision. Symptoms and signs improved on withdrawal of the drug, but reduction of tear secretion persisted in most patients.

Genetic, tissue culture and ultrastructural studies demonstrate the heterogeneous nature of oculocutaneous albinism and a proposed classification based on these criteria is given. Six mutations are identified and the population frequencies of the common forms are determined. Some forms have, in addition to a pigment defect, abnormalities in platelets, glycolipids and chromosomes. In tyrosinase positive albinism, both in vitro and in vivo pigment formation can be induced by 1-tyrosine or 1-dopa.

A 72-year-old man presented with a 6-month history of systemic edema. Hyperpigmentation, hemangioma, pleural effusion, IgG-kappa-type monoclonal protein, high vascular endothelial growth factor values, renal failure, and nerve conduction study abnormalities were also present. Freckles, the lay term for ephelides and lentigines, are important pigmentation characteristics observed in humans. Both are affected by sunlight; ephelides are largely genetically determined but induced by sunlight, whereas lentigines are induced by sun exposure and photodamage of the skin. However, despite being commonly observed, we know very little about them. Here, we review the current status of knowledge about freckles and propose a model for their formation.
