Role of posturography in the management of vestibular patients.

Computerized dynamic posturography uses a force platform that can both translate and rotate. When combined with visual stimuli, it can be used to determine the relative importance of the various sensory inputs critical for balance, namely vision, somatosensation, and vestibular sensation. Studies to date have shown several patterns of abnormalities on posturography, the best recognized being the vestibular pattern. Many patients with a high suspicion of having a peripheral vestibular abnormality (based on other information) have such a pattern. Moreover, few normal subjects have such abnormali

Postnatal neurogenesis in the feline cerebellum: a structural-functional investigation.

The postnatal development of the feline cerebellum was analyzed and correlated with the development of balance and locomotor patterns of behavior. Three major experimental approaches were undertaken to analyze this development: (i) packing densities and linear measurements of the nodulus and uvula lobes of the archicerebellum; (ii) qualitative analysis of changes in cell composition and morphology; and (iii) behavioral observations of the development of locomotor activity. The histological analysis indicated that the external granular layers (EGL) attained its maximum thickness at 15 days foll

The management of drop attacks.

From the preceding it is evident that drop attacks can result from a myriad of causes. As in all situations, the patient's history and the clinical picture are the most important factors in arriving at the appropriate diagnosis. However, understanding the neurophysiologic basis of posture should prove significantly helpful in this endeavor.

Comparison of Trunk Motion between Moderate AIS and Healthy Children.

Analysis of kinematic and postural data of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients seems relevant for a better understanding of biomechanical aspects involved in AIS and its etiopathogenesis. The present project aimed at investigating kinematic differences and asymmetries in early AIS in a static task and in uniplanar trunk movements (rotations, lateral bending, and forward bending). Trunk kinematics and posture were assessed using a 3D motion analysis system and a force plate. A total of fifteen healthy girls, fifteen AIS girls with a left lumbar main curve, and seventeen AIS girls wit…

Long-term effects of vestibular compensation on balance control and sensory organisation after unilateral deafferentation due to vestibular schwannoma surgery.

The time-course of central adaptive mechanisms after vestibular schwannoma surgical removal allows, 3 months after surgery (middle term), a satisfactory recovery of balance control. However, the long-term evolution of postural control beyond the end of usual medical follow-up remains unknown. This longitudinal prospective study aimed to assess the long-term effects of vestibular compensation on balance control and sensory organisation in patients operated on for vestibular schwannoma. Thirty-six patients with vestibular schwannoma underwent vestibular and sensory organisation tests, shortly be

Does postdural puncture headache left untreated lead to subdural hematoma? Case report and review of the literature.

The patient was a 39-year-old pregnant woman who was scheduled for cesarean section. Spinal anesthesia was induced using a 26-gauge needle with an atraumatic bevel. Postoperatively, the patient developed cranial subdural hematoma manifesting as severe non-postural headache, associated with right eye tearing, fifth cranial nerve palsy and left hemiparesis. The diagnosis was confirmed by computed tomography scan. The patient was managed by careful neurological follow-up associated with conservative treatment and recovered fully after 12 weeks. Our report reviews the literature on 46 patients who

Vestibular control of skeletal geometry in the guinea pig: a problem of good trim?

Motor control of different segments of the body with multiple degrees of freedom appears to be coordinated by utilizing preferred axes of motor activity. This hypothesis may also be applied to vestibular control of posture. To explore this question we studied the anatomical relationship between the head and the cervical vertebral column by taking radiographs of the head-neck region in unrestrained alert guinea pigs. We determined that biomechanical constraints contribute to the stereotypical skeletal geometry observed in the resting animal and to a functional segmentation of the head-neck move…

Relationship Between One-Leg Standing and Foot Sole Sensation Following Short-Term Immobilization of a Unilateral Lower Extremity.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have suggested that approximately 10 hours of inactivity can reduce motor performance. Specifically, restricted lower limb movement may impair postural stability, subsequently increasing the incidence of falls. However, the relationship between postural sway and its related factors remains unclear. This study investigated the relationship between postural sway in the upright standing position and foot sole sensitivity after short-term immobilization. METHODS: Healthy young adults were enrolled. Each participant's lower limb was immobilized for 10 hours using a soft

A Statistical and AI Analysis of the Frequency Spectrum in the Measurement of the Center of Pressure Track in the Seated Position in Healthy Subjects and Subjects with Low Back Pain.

Measuring postural control in an upright standing position is the standard method. However, this diagnostic method has floor or ceiling effects and its implementation is only possible to a limited extent. Assessing postural control directly on the trunk in a sitting position and consideration of the results in the spectrum in conjunction with an AI-supported evaluation could represent an alternative diagnostic method quantifying neuromuscular control. In a prospective cross-sectional study, 188 subjects aged between 18 and 60 years were recruited and divided into two groups: "LowBackPain" vs.

Horses Could Perceive Riding Differently Depending on the Way They Express Poor Welfare in the Stable.

This study investigated the relationships between four behavioral and postural indicators of a compromised welfare state in loose boxes (stereotypies, aggressive behaviors toward humans, withdrawn posture reflecting unresponsiveness to the environment, and alert posture indicating hypervigilance) and the way horses perceived riding. This perception was inferred using a survey completed by the usual riding instructor and during a standardized riding session (assessment of behaviors and postures, qualitative behavior assessment (QBA) and characterization of the horses' locomotion using an inerti…
