Managing dental fear and anxiety.

Fear and anxiety are primary reasons why individuals avoid visiting the dental practitioner. Dental anxiety appears to vary by type of treatment, with periodontic and endodontic patients reporting higher levels of anxiety than patients receiving restorative or prophylactic treatment. Parents who experience dental anxiety often pass along such feelings to their children. Front office employees are the first line in screening for anxiety-related behaviors while the patient is in the reception area. It is extremely important to recognize dental fear and anxiety before the patient receives oral ca

Treating ethnic minority adults with anxiety disorders: current status and future recommendations.

The past three decades have witnessed an increase in the number of empirical investigations examining the phenomenology of anxiety and related conditions. There has also been an increase in efforts to understand differences that may exist between ethnic groups in the expression of the anxiety disorders. In addition, there is now substantial evidence that a variety of treatment approaches (most notably behavioral and cognitive behavioral) are efficacious in remediating anxiety. However, there continues to be comparatively few treatment outcome studies investigating the efficacy of anxiety treat

Asthma and mental health among youth: etiology, current knowledge and future directions.

Asthma and mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety and behavior disorders, are common among youth and are significant sources of morbidity. There is a consistent association between asthma and anxiety/depression and a less consistent association between asthma and behavior disorders. Possible biological and psychological mechanisms may include inflammatory processes as well as the stress of having to live with a life-threatening condition. Future studies are warranted with longitudinal designs to establish temporality as well as measures of potential confounds. Biological and psych

[Diagnosis and treatment of hair pulling- and skin picking disorder].

Hair pulling disorder (HPD; trichotillomania) is characterized by recurrent pulling of hair from the scalp, eyebrows or other parts of the body. Skin picking disorder (SPD) is closely related to HPD and involves re-current picking of the skin. Even though both HPD and SPD are relatively common and potentially severe disorders, health professionals typically know little about them. In the present article, we describe the clinical characteristics of these problems and provide diagnostic guidelines. We also discuss main treatment approaches (drug treatments and behavior therapy) and review resear

A social competence intervention for young children with high functioning autism and Asperger syndrome: a pilot study.

The key features of Asperger Syndrome (AS) and high functioning autism (HFA) include marked and sustained impairment in social interactions. A multi-session, small group program was developed to increase social perception based on the assumption perceptual or interpretive problems underlying these social difficulties. Additionally, the group format espoused a play therapy orientation and the use of sociodramatic play was the primary therapeutic modality used. Qualitative analyses of the data resulted in an explanation of the key changes in social interactions that took place through the course

Contribution of the TA repeats on melting temperature (T(m)) in a double strand DNA: comparison of two methods and implications in molecular diagnostics.

The present paper is aimed to discuss and revise a not recent molecular laboratory protocol describing the behavior of UGT1A1 gene melting curves. Since some problems in the standardization of this already published molecular protocol were found, we tried to improve this method in order to correctly set up the amplification and melting profile steps. Under our standardized conditions, we were able to perfectly distinguish the three different UGT1A1 genotypes since each one showed a peculiar melting behavior, as compared with those previously published by another group. Finally, some suggestion

Approach/positive anticipation, frustration/anger, and overt aggression in childhood.

We examined mothers' ratings of children's affective and behavioral aspects of approach tendencies and links with overt aggressive behavior problems while considering the genetic etiology of these processes. Approach/positive anticipation (AP), frustration/anger (FA), and overt aggression in 4-9-year-olds were assessed using mothers' reports in a diverse national sample (n=992) and a sample of same-sex twins (n=195 pairs). AP and FA were positively correlated with each other and with overt aggression (r from .2 to .5), and these associations were very similar for boys and girls. AP and FA prov

Rumination on anger and sadness in adolescence: fueling of fury and deepening of despair.

We examined anger rumination and sadness rumination in clinic-referred adolescents (N = 121). Factor analysis indicated that items from analogous anger and sadness rumination measures loaded onto 2 factors tapping anger rumination and sadness rumination, respectively. Structural equation modeling confirmed unique relations between each form of rumination and specific emotional or behavioral problems. Anger and anger rumination were independent predictors of aggression, suggesting that both the affective component of anger (i.e., angry feelings) and the cognitive process (i.e., recurrent though

Nipping early risk factors in the bud: preventing substance abuse, delinquency, and violence in adolescence through interventions targeted at young children (0-8 years).

This bulletin describes state-of-the-art universal and selective prevention programs designed to promote parent and teacher competencies and to prevent conduct problems. In addition, it describes indicated interventions designed for children who already have been diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder and/or conduct disorder. Emphasis is placed on empirically supported programs that have identified key malleable risk factors in children, families, and schools, which have been shown in longitudinal research to be related to later development of substance abuse, delinquency, and violence.

Hospital-based dental care for persons with disabilities: a study of patient selection criteria.

The objective of this investigation was to generate a medical and dental profile of patients attending the Mount Sinai Hospital Dental Program for Persons with Disabilities, to determine if certain selected criteria could identify patients likely to require dental care in that setting. The need for dental care under general anesthesia was used as the prime indicator that care should be provided in a hospital setting. A retrospective review of all the charts of the patients enrolled in this hospital program was undertaken. Results indicated that patients who were treated in this hospital-based

Acoustic-phonetic approach toward understanding neural processes and speech perception.

This review paper describes an "acoustic-phonetic" experimental approach aimed at understanding normal and abnormal speech perception processes from both a behavioral and an electrophysiologic perspective. First, we consider the relevant acoustic characteristics of speech and identify a set of acoustic-phonetic classes that represent the parameters most important for making an acoustic signal sound like speech. Second, we review what is known about the neurophysiologic representation of acoustic-phonetic speech parameters in animal and human subjects. Third, we describe how an acoustic-phoneti

Prevention of marital dysfunction: behavioral approaches and beyond.

Marital dysfunction is a significant problem in the U.S., with far-ranging effects on the mental health, physical health, and economic well-being of people who experience it. In addition, marital discord and divorce appear to have adverse effects on children. This review describes the historical roots of current prevention programs and critically reviews marriage preparation programs that have been examined in the peer-reviewed literature. The results of 13 studies suggest that behaviorally oriented, skills-based marriage preparation programs can lead to behavioral changes that may help preven

Statistical methods in functional magnetic resonance imaging with respect to nonstationary time-series: auditory cortex activity.

In awake animal and human auditory cortices, it is a common experience with electrophysiological and suitable imaging methods for responses to steady stimulation to be strongly state-dependent and to exhibit nonstationarities, even over short periods of observation. If such nonstationary behavior is also reflected by hemodynamic responses in the human auditory cortex, conventional methods of analysis of fMRI data, although applicable for instance to largely stationary responses in visual and other cortices, may be misleading in attempts to parcellate auditory cortex into fields and to demonstr

Childhood experience, interpersonal development, and reproductive strategy: and evolutionary theory of socialization.

The concept of "reproductive strategy" drawn from the field of behavioral ecology is applied to the study of childhood experience and interpersonal development in order to develop an evolutionary theory of socialization. The theory is presented in terms of 2 divergent development pathways considered to promote reproductive success in the contexts in which they have arisen. One is characterized, in childhood, by a stressful rearing environment and the development of insecure attachments to parents and subsequent behavior problems; in adolescence by early pubertal development and precocious sexu

The relationship between defenses and symptoms in adolescent psychopathology.

The relationship between defense mechanisms and symptoms was assessed in a group of 196 psychiatrically hospitalized adolescents. Defense mechanisms were measured through the use of the Defense Mechanisms Inventory (DMI); symptoms and problem behaviors were measured with the Youth Self-Report. Univariate and multivariate analyses indicated that externalizing symptoms are associated with defenses that locate the conflict outside of the self, whereas internalizing symptoms are associated with defenses that locate the conflict within the self. In contrast to previous reports, no gender difference…

Contemporary threats to adolescent health in the United States.

Over the past 30 years, adolescents have been the only population in the United States who have not experienced improvement in their health status. Violence has replaced communicable diseases as the primary cause of juvenile mortality and, currently, over 77% of adolescent deaths are caused by accidents, suicide, and homicide. Increasingly, poverty, life-style, and risk-taking behaviors are influencing the morbidities of youth, with associated sequelae of trauma, adolescent pregnancy, substance abuse, physical/sexual abuse, and most other major health problems of adolescents. Clinicians seem t

Associations of Adaptive Behavior and Wandering with Serious Injuries in Young Children with Autism: Study to Explore Early Development.

PURPOSE: Increased injury risk in children with autism may result from co-occurring developmental characteristics and challenges. We examined associations of adaptive behavior delay and wandering with injuries among children with autism. METHODS: Cross-sectional analyses were performed using data from 648 children aged 30-68 months with autism determined by standardized instruments. Associations of adaptive behavior delay and wandering with any parent-reported serious injury (i.e., resulting in emergency department visit or hospitalization) since birth were examined, adjusting for age and att
