Sympathetic neurons and other peripheral neurons exhibit a great deal of plasticity in their neuropeptide phenotype in adulthood. In this review, two phenotypes have been described in detail: that of normal sympathetic neurons and that of axotomized neurons. Two factors produced by nonneuronal cells, LIF and NGF, determine which of these phenotypes is expressed. Passenger car collisions with other vehicles and with fixed objects were studied from a representative sample of fatal and injury-producing collisions collected according to a prescribed sampling plan. This paper describes our analysis of accidents involving restrained passenger car occupants who are fatally injured in collisions. We have used microdialysis to establish an experimental model to characterize mechanisms whereby released substances cause secondary damage in spinal cord injury. We use this model here to characterize damaging effects of the hydroxyl radical (OH.) in vivo in the spinal cord. OH. was generated in vivo by pumping H2O2 and FeCl2/EDTA through parallel microdialysis fibers inserted into the spinal cord. These agents mixed in the tissue to produce OH. by Fenton's reaction. OBJECTIVES: National data are thought to underestimate pregnancy-related mortality in the United States. A multisource surveillance system for pregnancy-associated deaths in New Jersey offers an opportunity to identify the magnitude of and the trends in pregnancy-related mortality at the state level.

We compared plasma ANP concentration and atrial content of ANP as well as plasma concentrations of other fluid regulating hormones and renal function between the MVR group (n = 12) and the non MVR group (n = 14) during open heart surgery.
