Contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP) was recognised on Bako Agricultural Research Farm, in the Oromia Region of Ethiopia, for the first time on 5 May 2011. The outbreak was investigated by combining recognition of clinical signs, post-mortem examination, mycoplasma isolation and serological testing using competitive enzymelinked immunosorbent assay (c-ELISA). The clinical cases were monitored for eight months; sick animals were treated with a range of antibiotics and isolated if necessary. The outbreak of CBPP was confirmed both bacteriologically and serologically and had spread to almost

The common presentation of coeliac disease has shifted from the historically classical symptoms of malabsorption in childhood to non-classical symptoms in adulthood such as irritable bowel syndrome-type symptoms, anaemia, chronic fatigue, change in bowel habit, abdominal pain and osteoporosis. A combination of coeliac serology and duodenal biopsy is required to diagnose coeliac disease in adults. Testing for IgA-tissue transglutaminase antibodies should be carried out as a first-line screening test. Advise patients to eat a gluten-containing diet for six weeks before their investigations to en

Pulmonary embolism due to hydatid disease has been rare clinically. Here we present a patient case who suffered from multiple cystic hydatidosis within bilateral lung parenchyma and complicated bilateral pulmonary embolisms. The case was a 70-year-old man who complained of an increasingly severe cough and hemoptysis post-operation of hepatic hydatid cyst. Chest radiographs showed that the patient had multiple nodules in the bilateral chest. Computed tomography (CT) depicted that some lesions were multivesicular cysts and some consisting of sophisticated complications. CT pulmonary angiography

A 72-year-old Caucasian woman presented with a 3-week history of confusion, cramping abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, fatigue and dehydration. By history, she reported consumption of raw pork and bacon that was salted and cured in brine, but not boiled or cooked. Laboratory testing was significant for an absolute eosinophil count of 3.09×10(9)/L. She was found to have a positive Trichinella serology by ELISA testing. Based on history of raw pork consumption, symptoms, peripheral eosinophilia and positive serology, a diagnosis of trichinosis was made. Treatment was started with oral

BACKGROUND: Antigens for Hantavirus serological tests have been produced using DNA recombinant technology for more than twenty years. Several different strategies have been used for that purpose. All of them avoid the risks and difficulties involved in multiplying Hantavirus in the laboratory. In Brazil, the Araraquara virus is one of the main causes of Hantavirus Cardio-Pulmonary Syndrome (HCPS).
METHODS: In this investigation, we report the expression of the N protein of the Araraquara Hantavirus in a Baculovirus Expression System, the use of this protein in IgM and IgG ELISA and comparison

Cystic hydatid disease is a zoonosis caused by infection with the larval cysts of Echinococcus granulosus. Cysts commonly develop in the liver and lungs. Diagnosis in non-endemic regions is often delayed due to a failure to consider hydatidosis. This results from a non-specific presentation and a failure to record an accurate geographical history. The diagnosis requires integrating an appropriate index of suspicion with correct interpretation of imaging and serological tests. In our case, a 44-year-old woman of Yemeni origin presented to a UK hospital with chest pain, pruritus and weight loss.

Incidence of bovine babesiosis in Portugal is currently unknown. In this study, a first survey of Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina infection in cattle was carried out using blood samples from 406 clinically healthy individuals from different districts from Central and Southern regions of Portugal and analyzed by indirect enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (iELISA) and nested polymerase chain reaction (nPCR). Overall, serological testing revealed that 79% and 52% of cattle were positive for B. bovis and B. bigemina antibodies, respectively, whereas nPCR testing detected 71% and 34% cattle infe

The Ilheus (ILH) virus has long been known to belong to group B of the arboviruses. Previous attempts to relate it to existing serogroups within the Flavivirus genus using conventional serological techniques such as hemagglutination inhibition, neutralization and complement fixation tests have been inconclusive. We have first used denaturing gel electrophoresis to estimate the molecular weight of immunoprecipitated radiolabeled viral proteins and the cross-reactivity among ILH proteins and hyperimmune sera to several flaviviruses only from the mosquito-borne encephalitis virus serogroups. The

Five hundred and fifty samples of blood collected from the umbilical cords of an equivalent number of newborns were analyzed for serological evidence of congenital toxoplasmosis based on the detection of IgG and IgM. Six newborns presented serological evidence of congenital toxoplasmosis (IgM > 1:5, < 80 IU/ml), which represents an incidence of 10.9 per 1000 live births. During pregnancy four of the mothers of these six newborns were asymptomatic, whereas the other two mothers presented non-specific signs and symptoms. The six newborns did not present positive signs of acute toxoplasmosis at b

Data were obtained in 10 patients with amebic dysentery at Osaka Socio-Medical Center hospital during the period from April 1985, to April 1989. All of the patients were male, and their average age was 41 years old. In the past history, all of them had never gone to foreign country, and 7 patients had the habit of homosexual love. In the serological test, positive rate of antiamebic antibody was 100% (6/6) by agar gel diffusion, that of antibody of Toreponema pallidum was 60% (6/10) by TPHA, but anti AIDS antibody was not detected (0/3) by HIV. Detectability of Entoamoeba hystolitica was 70% (

Clinical, serologic, virologic, and immunologic evaluations for 31 adults with chronic illness and fatigue suggested that 23 had persisting Epstein-Barr virus infection. Among these 23 patients, cellular immune mechanisms were generally normal, but 4 had mild immunoglobulin deficiencies. However, 20 patients had abnormal serologic profiles specific for Epstein-Barr virus shown by significantly elevated titers of antibodies to the viral capsid antigen or early antigen, or by a deficiency of late-appearing antibodies. In 11 of 15 patients tested, circulating immune complexes were found. Circulat

In a study of 180 male homosexual patients attending a venereal disease clinic, a correlation was sought between symptoms and signs of proctitis and the isolation of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, group B streptococci, Chlamydia trachomatis, Ureaplasma urealyticum, Mycoplasma hominis and herpes simplex virus. Faecal specimens were examined for enteric pathogens and serological tests for hepatitis B virus, syphilitic and chlamydial infections were performed. There was no association between proctitis, as diagnosed by examination of a Gram-stained rectal smear, and the isolation of any micro-organism or

Legionella pneumophila was successfully isolated from sputum, and from respiratory secretions obtained by tracheal aspiration, of two patients with Legionnaires' disease by means of guinea pigs and charcoal yeast extract agar. Direct culture of lung tissue from one of these patients gave a pure growth of L. pneumophila. In both cases, legionellas were isolated from specimens which were collected several days after treatment with erythromycin began. Direct fluorescent antibody tests on these specimens gave positive results. This test can result in the rapid diagnosis of legionellosis in careful

Anti-neutrophil-cytoplasm antibodies recently have been reported as serologic markers of Wegener's granulomatosis. We describe two cases in which this test appeared to be of great value in the diagnosis of Wegener's granulomatosis presenting as acute respiratory failure, a clinical setting in which it may be the only diagnostic test that can be safely and easily performed.

BACKGROUND: Some individuals carry a very low expression of the D-antigen, called a Del phenotype. Red cell units from such blood donors with DEL alleles are RhD protein-positive, despite being routinely labelled D-negative. Molecular typing offers a more sensitive method to identify Del individuals by detecting the presence of the RHD gene. Pools of 20 or more donor samples are routinely screened for the RHD gene in some, mostly European, donor populations.
METHODS: A modular real-time PCR assay targeting RHD intron 4, exon 5, and exon 7 was developed for individual testing. We screened for

BACKGROUND: Dried blood spots (DBS) are a widely used sampling method for serological testing, particularly in resource-limited settings. However, long-term stability of HIV antibodies in DBS remains underexplored. This study evaluates the stability of HIV serological markers stored at -80 °C for 7 years and compares the analytical performance and concordance of three different diagnostic techniques: electrochemiluminescence immunoassay (ECLIA), enzyme-linked fluorescent assay (ELFA), and immunochromatography.
METHODS: Between 2016 and 2017, a total of 143 DBS samples were collected at Monkol

BACKGROUND: Infective endocarditis (IE) is an uncommon but potentially fatal disease, with an incidence of 13.8 per 100 000 and persistent high mortality (15-30%). In 10-20% of cases, cultures remain negative and additional serological testing for infectious and non-bacterial endocarditis is required.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Feline leishmaniasis (FeL) is caused by several species of parasites of the genus Leishmania. The disease can occur with the presence or absence of clinical signs, similar to those observed in other common infectious diseases. In endemic regions for FeL, the infection has been associated with dermatological lesions. Therefore, considering the search for less invasive and more effective diagnostic techniques, we aimed to investigate the presence of Leishmania spp. in domestic cats through Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and high-resolution melting (HRM) analyses of co

Strongyloides stercoralis is a nematode endemic to subtropical and tropical regions that may cause asymptomatic carriage, peripheral eosinophilia, cutaneous, gastrointestinal, and pulmonary disease, or hyperinfection syndrome. Conventional diagnostic methods for strongyloidiasis include feces microscopy and culture, with low sensitivity in chronic infection due to the low helminth burden, and serology, which may be prone to false-negative results with immunocompromise and false-positive results with other infections and immunological disorders. We evaluated a laboratory-developed real-time pol
