The impact of obesity and weight gain on development of sleep problems in a population-based sample.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to investigate the role of obesity and weight gain in the development of sleep problems in a population-based cohort. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A population-based sample of men (n = 1896, aged 40-79 years) and women (n = 5116, age ≥20 years) responded to questionnaires at baseline and follow-up after 10-13 years. Sleep problems were assessed through questions about difficulties initiating sleep (DIS), difficulties maintaining sleep (DMS), excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), and insomnia. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated from self-reported weight and

Sleep disturbances in bipolar disorder during remission.

BACKGROUND: While sleep disturbances associated with bipolar disorder's depression and mania phases are well documented, the literature regarding sleep during remission phases is less consistent. The present study's aim was to describe the nature and severity of sleep difficulties in individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) during remission phases. METHODS: Fourteen participants with BD were compared to 13 participants with primary insomnia and 13 without mental health disorders or insomnia on different sleep and daytime functioning parameters using actigraphy, sleep diaries and self-report mea

A female case with the Kleine-Levin syndrome and its physiopathologic aspects.

A female case with the Kleine-Levin syndrome (KLS), which first occurred at the age of 19, was discussed in relation to the following four characteristics: 1) a female case, 2) a loss of memory and the appearance of slow waves in the pathosis, 3) the abnormal pattern of growth hormone (GH) secretion during sleep in the pathosis, and 4) a prolonged latency between the peaks of III and V in the auditory brainstem response (ABR) in both the pathosis and nonpathosis. These characteristics may suggest that there is a slight disturbance of consciousness in the pathosis, and that there is a functiona

Adverse pregnancy outcomes and pharyngeal flow limitation during sleep: Nulliparous Pregnancy Outcomes Study Monitoring Mothers-to-be (nuMoM2b).

BACKGROUND: Pharyngeal flow limitation during pregnancy may be a risk factor for adverse pregnancy outcomes but was previously challenging to quantify. Our objective was to determine whether a novel objective measure of flow limitation identifies an increased risk of pre-eclampsia (primary outcome) and other adverse outcomes in a prospective cohort: Nulliparous Pregnancy Outcomes Study Monitoring Mothers-to-be (nuMoM2b). METHODS: Flow limitation severity scores (0%=fully obstructed, 100%=open airway), quantified from breath-by-breath airflow shape, were obtained from home sleep tests during e

Reduced EDSS progression in multiple sclerosis patients treated with modafinil for three years or more compared to matched untreated subjects.

BACKGROUND: Modafinil is a wakefulness-promoting drug used to treat narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnoea, and shift-work sleep disorder. Modafinil has also been used for the treatment of fatigue and excessive sleepiness in other neurological disorders including multiple sclerosis, psychiatric disorders, and for cognitive enhancement. Recent preclinical studies suggest a potential neuroprotective effect of modafinil in neurodegenerative diseases. Therefore, we investigated its neuroprotective potential in multiple sclerosis. OBJECTIVE: To retrospectively assess disease progression in a group o

Relationship among subjective sleep complaints, headaches, and mood alterations following a mild traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Sleep complaints (e.g., frequent awakenings, nightmares), headaches and mood alterations (e.g., feeling depressed, irritable) can appear following a mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI). The objective of this retrospective study was to assess the relationships between the above symptoms. Our hypothesis was that sleep complaints might be among the risk factors for the development of headaches and mood alterations. METHODS: The consecutive charts of 443 patients (68.2% males vs. 31.8% female; mean age of 46.9 years) diagnosed with MTBI were reviewed for past medical history and above

Obstructive sleep apnea is more common than central sleep apnea in methadone maintenance patients with subjective sleep complaints.

OBJECTIVES: Opioid-dependent patients treated with methadone have subjective sleep complaints and disrupted sleep on polysomnography (PSG). Previous studies of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in this population have focused on central sleep apnea (CSA). Our objectives were to: (1) characterize obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and CSA in patients in methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) for opioid dependence; (2) examine factors associated with SDB in this population; and (3) investigate whether SDB was related to severity of subjective sleep complaints in MMT patients with subjective sleep distu

Medical aspects of the persistent vegetative state (1).

This consensus statement of the Multi-Society Task Force summarizes current knowledge of the medical aspects of the persistent vegetative state in adults and children. The vegetative state is a clinical condition of complete unawareness of the self and the environment, accompanied by sleep-wake cycles, with either complete or partial preservation of hypothalamic and brain-stem autonomic functions. In addition, patients in a vegetative state show no evidence of sustained, reproducible, purposeful, or voluntary behavioral responses to visual, auditory, tactile, or noxious stimuli; show no eviden

[Sleep of sleep research personnel--results of the Munster Congress survey].

Due to different knowledge of sleep and sleep disorders (i.e. focussing) sleep quality of sleep-researchers may be better or worse than the sleep of other scientists. On the Münster Congress for Sleep-research and Sleep medicine in March 1994 we investigated this question using the Pittsburger Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). 46 sleep researchers, 52 practitioners and 103 scientists of other disciplines from the Münster University filled out the questionnaire. Results show no difference in overall sleep quality between the three groups, but only sleep quality in the group of sleep researchers shows

Sleep apnea syndrome due to upper airway obstruction: a review of 25 cases.

A sleep apnea syndrome due to upper airway obstruction was diagnosed in 25 adult men (25 to 65 years of age) using nocturnal polygraphic monitoring. Excessive daytime somnolence, hypnagogic hallucinations, and automatic behavior, personality changes with abnormal behavioral outbursts, impotence, morning headaches, abnormal motor activity during sleep, nocturnal enuresis, and high blood pressure should suggest this diagnosis when any of the symptoms are associated with loud snoring. Respiratory monitoring during sleep and nocturnal cardiovascular evaluation bring prognostic information and indi

Evaluating seltorexant as a treatment option for major depressive disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Major depressive disorder is a leading cause of disability, with a significant rate of patients responding inadequately to antidepressants, and residual symptoms, including insomnia, worsening overall outcomes. Current adjunctive options display partial efficacy and tolerability, motivating the search for different strategies. Beyond regulating the sleep-wake cycle, orexin systems are implicated in reward and cognition, and have emerged as new targets for depressive disorders. AREAS COVERED: This Drug Profile summarizes the published peer-reviewed evidence on seltorexant (JNJ-42

Ruthenium-Anchored Carbon Sphere-Customized Sensor for the Selective Amperometric Detection of Melatonin.

Melatonin (MT), a pineal gland hormone, regulates the sleep/wake cycle and is a potential biomarker for neurodegenerative disorders, depression, hypertension, and several cancers, including prostate cancer and hepatocarcinoma. The amperometric detection of MT was achieved using a sensor customized with ruthenium-incorporated carbon spheres (Ru-CS), possessing C- and O-rich catalytically active Ru surfaces. The non-covalent interactions and ion-molecule adducts between Ru and CS favor the formation of heterojunctions at the sensor-analyte interface, thus accelerating the reactions towards MT. T

Potential Effect of the Circadian Clock on Erectile Dysfunction.

The circadian rhythm is an internal timing system, which is generated by circadian clock genes. Because the circadian rhythm regulates numerous cellular, behavioral, and physiological processes, organisms have evolved with intrinsic biological rhythms to adapt the daily environmental changes. A variety of pathological events occur at specific times, while disturbed rhythms can lead to metabolic syndrome, vascular dysfunction, inflammatory disorders, and cancer. Therefore, the circadian clock is considered closely related to various diseases. Recently, accumulated data have shown that the penis

The Light-Inducible Genes Per2, Cry1a, and Cry2a Regulate Oxidative Status in Zebrafish.

The circadian clock is a highly conserved 24 h biological oscillation mechanism and is affected by environmental stimuli such as light, food and temperature. Disruption of the circadian clock results in disorders of diverse biological processes, including the sleep-wake cycle and metabolism. Although we previously identified several components of the circadian clock in zebrafish, our understanding of the relationship between light-inducible clock genes and metabolism remains incomplete. To investigate how light-inducible clock genes regulate metabolism, we performed transcriptomic and metabolo
