Having Reliable Support: A Prerequisite to Promote Sexual and Reproductive Health in Young Women with ADHD.

Living with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may influence sexual behaviors and intimate relationships in young women, resulting in a higher risk of unwanted pregnancy, sexual victimization, and sexual dysfunction. To develop adequate support, the study aimed to describe conceptions of how to promote sexual and reproductive health (SRH) in young women with ADHD. A secondary analysis using phenomenography was performed on qualitative interview data exploring variations of support. The study involved 15 young women with ADHD, aged 15-29 years, and 16 health care professionals, wit

The wounded helper: moral injury contributes to depression and anxiety among Israeli health and social care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic can affect the mental health of health and social care workers (HSCWs) who are frontline workers in this crisis. The pandemic poses unique challenges to HSCWs as they face morally daunting decisions while working with limited knowledge and resources. This study examined the relationships between exposure to potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs) and depression and anxiety among HSCWs. METHOD: A sample of 243 Israeli HSCWs completed validated self-report questionnaires that include measures of depression, anxiety, exposure to PMIEs, perceived stress, and

Evaluation of Latent Fingerprints for Drug Screening in a Social Care Setting.

Sweat deposited via latent fingerprints (LFPs) was previously used to detect cocaine, opioids, cannabis and amphetamine via a point-of-care test (POCT). This screening method combined non-invasive sampling with a rapid result turnaround to produce a qualitative result outside of the laboratory. We report the novel application of a LFP drug screening test in a social care setting. Clients were tested on either an ad hoc or a routine basis using the POCT DOA114 (Intelligent Fingerprinting Ltd) drug screening cartridge. Screening cutoff values were 45, 35 and 95 pg/fingerprint for benzoylecgonine

Coparenting Intervention for Expectant Parents Affects Relationship Quality: A Pilot Study.

Research has shown that the transition to parenthood is a particularly challenging period of life which is often associated with a decline in relationship quality and an increase in mental health problems. Emerging parents often experience difficulties in coping with new tasks and challenges in the relationship, resulting in inadequate mutual support, stress, conflicts and even depressive symptoms. To support expectant parents in establishing an effective and strong coparenting alliance, we have employed an educational coparenting intervention to teach important coparenting skills. The interve

Palliative care and symptom relief for people affected by multidrug-resistant tuberculosis.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines palliative care as the prevention and relief of the physical, psychological, social and spiritual suffering of adults and children with life-threatening illnesses and psycho-social support for their families. Palliative care and symptom relief (PCSR) also addresses suffering in nonlife-threatening situations such as after cure. PCSR should never be considered a substitute for tuberculosis (TB) prevention and treatment, but should be accessible by everyone in need. PCSR can reduce suffering and improve quality of life of patients with end-stage chroni…

"It Wasn't Just One Thing": A Qualitative Study of Newly Homeless Emergency Department Patients.

OBJECTIVES: Emergency departments (EDs) frequently care for patients who are homeless or unstably housed. One promising approach taken by the homeless services system is to provide interventions that attempt to prevent homelessness before it occurs. Experts have suggested that health care settings may be ideal locations to identify and intervene with patients at risk for homelessness, yet little is known even about the basic characteristics of patients who might benefit from such interventions. METHODS: We conducted in-depth, one-on-one qualitative interviews with ED patients who had become h

Child Sexual Abuse and Situational Context: Children's Experiences in Post-Conflict Northern Uganda.

Although substantial literature exists on child sexual abuse (CSA), little is known about abuses children encounter in northern Uganda, a post-conflict area. Media reports have indicated a high incidence for CSA. The study, firstly, explored boys' and girls' experiences of sexual abuse by adults in this post-conflict region and secondly, interventions directed at improving the current situation of children at risk of child abuse and the survivors were investigated as well. The study was guided by radical feminism and nested ecological framework theories. Semi-structured interviews were conduct

The impact of chronic oedema on quality of life in the elderly.

Quality of life (QoL) is a concept that is relevant for everyone, but individuals experience factors that make up QoL differently. This article considers the impact chronic oedema has on older people's QoL. There are additional challenges in this group, such as the ageing process, which interlink with QoL. The presence of appropriate support networks and psychological strategies can have a positive impact on the management of chronic oedema and the patient's perception of QoL.
