Prognostic significance of mast cell and microvascular densities in malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor with and without neurofibromatosis type 1.

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) are rare and aggressive soft tissue sarcomas with a significant susceptibility to metastasize early in their course. Pathogenesis is yet to be fully elucidated. Recently, the essential role of mast cells in the tumor onset of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1)-associated neurofibromas and MPNSTs was confirmed in both experimental and human studies. In this study, we investigate mast cell density (MCD), microvascular density (MVD), and proliferation index (Ki-67) in MPNST. A secondary aim was to correlate histological staining to clinical data and s

Direct Three-Dimensional Diagnosis of Ex Vivo Facial Fractures.

The aim of the present study is to assess the reliability and accuracy of different 3-dimensional (3D) reconstruction algorithms in detecting undisplaced condylar, zygomatic arc, and orbital rim fractures based on cone-beam computed tomography data set. Twenty sheep heads were used in the present study. Sixty fractured and 60 nonfractured (control) zones were randomly allocated. Three groups consisting of nondisplaced fractures of condyle (CF, n = 20), orbital (OF, n = 20), and zygomatic arc (ZF, n = 20) were created by using a diamond cutting disc. Soft tissues were only dissected and no frac

TTTS-GPS: Patient-specific preoperative planning and simulation platform for twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome fetal surgery.

Twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) is a serious condition that may occur in pregnancies when two or more fetuses share the same placenta. It is characterized by abnormal vascular connections in the placenta that cause blood to flow unevenly between the babies. If left untreated, perinatal mortality occurs in 90% of cases, whilst neurological injuries are still present in TTTS survivors. Minimally invasive fetoscopic laser surgery is the standard and optimal treatment for this condition, but is technically challenging and can lead to complications. Acquiring and maintaining the required s

Management of Catastrophic Proximal Junctional Failure Following Spinal Deformity Correction in an Adult with Osteogenesis Imperfecta: Case Report and Technical Note.

BACKGROUND: Proximal junctional failure (PJF) is a major and sometimes devastating problem following adult spinal deformity (ASD) correction surgery. Common consensus still lags on guidelines for preventing and managing these complications. Surgical treatment of scoliosis in the presence of osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) in the pediatric population is well described. The complication rates are unusually higher in this special subset of patients owing to poor quality of bone. There is a paucity of literature focusing on surgical techniques, strategies, and problems involved in the management of A

Imaging of developmental dysplasia of the hip: ultrasound, radiography and magnetic resonance imaging.

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) describes a broad spectrum of developmental abnormalities of the hip joint that are traditionally diagnosed during infancy. Because the development of the hip joint is a dynamic process, optimal treatment depends not only on the severity of the dysplasia, but also on the age of the child. Various imaging modalities are routinely used to confirm suspected diagnosis, to assess severity, and to monitor treatment response. For infants younger than 4 months, screening hip ultrasound (US) is recommended only for those with risk factors, equivocal or positive

Dynamics of Face and Head Movement in Infants with and without Craniofacial Microsomia: An Automatic Approach.

BACKGROUND: Craniofacial microsomia (CFM) is a congenital condition associated with malformations of the bone and soft tissue of the face and the facial nerves, all of which have the potential to impair facial expressiveness. We investigated whether CFM-related variation in expressiveness is evident as early as infancy. METHODS: Participants were 113 ethnically diverse 13-month-old infants (n = 63 cases with CFM and n = 50 unaffected matched controls). They were observed in 2 emotion induction tasks designed to elicit positive and negative effects. Facial and head movement was automatically m

Protection Effect of Curcumin for Macrophage-Involved Polyethylene Wear Particle-Induced Inflammatory Osteolysis by Increasing the Cholesterol Efflux.

BACKGROUND Periprosthetic osteolysis, induced by wear particles and inflammation, is a common reason for failure of primary arthroplasty. Curcumin, a nature phenol from plants, has been reported to reduce the inflammation in macrophages. This study aimed to investigate the potential effect of curcumin on macrophage involved, wear particle-induced osteolysis and its mechanism. MATERIAL AND METHODS RAW264.7 macrophages were used to test the effects of polyethylene (PE) particles and curcumin on macrophage cholesterol efflux and phenotypic changes. A mouse model of PE particle-induced calvarial o

Interventional magnetic resonance imaging as a diagnostic and therapeutic method in treating acute pediatric atlantoaxial rotatory subluxation.

Atlantoaxial rotatory subluxation or fixation (AARF) is a rare condition, usually occurring in pediatric patients. It mimics benign torticollis but may result in permanent disability or death. The condition requires prompt diagnosis by thorough examination to avoid any treatment delays. Spiral computed tomography (CT) with three-dimensional reconstruction CT is recommended for identifying incongruence between C1 and C2 vertebrae, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be performed to exclude ligamentous injuries. In addition to static imaging, dynamic CT involves the reduction between C1 and

Vanishing of ruptured adrenal mass with takotsubo cardiomyopathy.

A 45-year-old male suddenly experienced left-flank abdominal pain. Echocardiography revealed akinesis of the 'takotsubo cardiomyopathy' type. He experienced a sudden haemodynamic collapse (blood pressure, 324/154 mmHg; pulse rate, 180 beats/min) during emergency cardiac catheterisation. An abdominal computed tomography (CT) revealed expansion of a soft tissue mass 64 × 33 mm in dimension in the left adrenal region, with accumulation of fluid surrounding the left pararenal space. Three days after the attack, his urinary catecholamine concentrations were slightly elevated. We suspected the patie

Cross-sectional Imaging of Gallbladder Carcinoma: An Update.

Gallbladder Carcinoma (GBCA) is the most common biliary tract malignancy. As the disease is often diagnosed clinically in an advanced stage, the survival rates are dismal. Imaging studies allow for an early diagnosis of malignancy, though the findings may be indistinguishable from non-malignant disease processes affecting the gallbladder. Attempts have been made to make a specific diagnosis of GBCA at an early stage on imaging studies. Ultrasonography (US) is the most commonly employed technique for gallbladder evaluation. Gallbladder wall thickening is the most common finding of early GBCA an
