Successful conservative treatment outcomes and clinical characteristics of congenital hypoplasia of the extensor tendon central slip.

UNLABELLED: Congenital hypoplasia of the extensor tendon central slip is a rare entity. This article describes the clinical characteristics in a series of 22 fingers in 16 patients (mean age: 10 months), and the outcomes of conservative treatment. Nine of 22 fingers were classified as slender or hypoplastic. Treatment with bracing was successful in 21 digits, resulting in full active extension of the proximal interphalangeal joint at a mean of 8.5 months after treatment. Bracing was unsuccessful in one digit, in which operative treatment resulted in a successful outcome. Some residual deformit

Spontaneous flexor tendon rupture secondary to capitate non-union. A case report and review of literature.

Rupture of the flexor digitorum profundus and superficialis tendons of the index finger secondary to non-union of the capitate has not yet been reported to our knowledge. We describe the case of a 48-year-old man with rupture of both flexor tendons of the index finger that occurred 15 years after a capitate fracture. The patient was completely asymptomatic before the rupture. Tendon reconstruction was performed using the palmaris longus. One year after surgery, the patient had acceptable range of motion and was pain-free.

[New arthroscopic portal for performing tenotomy/tenodesis procedures on the long head of the biceps brachii tendon].

BACKGROUND: Shoulder arthroscopy is the standard technique for performing procedures involving the intertubercular groove. Current techniques continue to produce excessive soft tissue manipulation and neurovascular injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional, observational and descriptive study was conducted on a cohort of 24 shoulders following the standard surgical protocol and using punch dissection. The neurovascular structures with risk of damage by the standard lateral portal were evaluated during the study to establish a secure area for a new arthroscopic portal. Finally, the safe

Assessment and Diagnosis of Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction: Do We Share the Same Opinions and Beliefs?

BACKGROUND: Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction is a disabling pathologic flatfoot disorder. Evidence supports the notion that this condition is poorly diagnosed by health-care professionals. In addition, opinion is divided as to the most appropriate assessment and diagnostic techniques used to reflect the progression or stage of the condition. Hence, this study intended to explore the views and opinions of health-care professionals who may be involved in its assessment and diagnosis. METHODS: A two-phase sequential mixed methods design was used that combined a questionnaire survey and a focu

Upper limb joint muscle/tendon injury and anthropometric adaptations in French competitive tennis players.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the upper limb anthropometric dimensions and a history of dominant upper limb injury in tennis players. Dominant and non-dominant wrist, forearm, elbow and arm circumferences, along with a history of dominant upper limb injuries, were assessed in 147 male and female players, assigned to four groups based on location of injury: wrist (n = 9), elbow (n = 25), shoulder (n = 14) and healthy players (n = 99). From anthropometric dimensions, bilateral differences in circumferences and in proportions were calculated. The wrist group pr

Treatment of distal biceps tendon rupture: why, when, how? Analysis of literature and our experience.

INTRODUCTION: The rupture of the distal biceps tendon is a relatively uncommon lesion. Even if conservative treatment may be an option in low demanding patients, young and active subjects may benefit from an early surgical reinsertion. Many techniques and fixation devices have been described, but in the literature, there are no clinical evidences that show the superiority of any of these. In this article, we report an analysis of the "state of the art" and our case series of surgical reinsertion with the double approach transosseous technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 2003 and 2013, 26

Does the adolescent patellar tendon respond to 5 days of cumulative load during a volleyball tournament?

Patellar tendinopathy (jumper's knee) has a high prevalence in jumping athletes. Excessive load on the patellar tendon through high volumes of training and competition is an important risk factor. Structural changes in the tendon are related to a higher risk of developing patellar tendinopathy. The critical tendon load that affects tendon structure is unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate patellar tendon structure on each day of a 5-day volleyball tournament in an adolescent population (16-18 years). The right patellar tendon of 41 players in the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup w

Repair and augmentation of a spontaneous patellar tendon rupture in a patient with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Disruption of the knee extensor mechanism is a serious disorder that requires prompt treatment. It often occurs in the form of a patellar tendon rupture. It may occur in association with systemic disease or after administration of corticosteroids or fluoroquinolones. These conditions can cause tendon weakness, and consequent ruptures usually require both repair and augmentation. This paper reports on repair and augmentation for treating patellar tendon rupture in patients with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS). CASE REPORT: We report a patellar tendon rupture in a 27-year-old man wit

Tibialis Anterior Tendon Lengthening: Adjunctive Treatment of Plantar Lateral Column Diabetic Foot Ulcers.

Tendon lengthening and rebalancing are adjunctive procedures for the treatment of chronic ulcerations in the diabetic foot. For example, the equinus deformity has been implicated as a major deforming force and is surgically treated by lengthening the Achilles tendon. A contracted tibialis anterior tendon can also play a role by potentiating a varus rotational force, increasing the pressures along the lateral column of the forefoot, and resulting in the development or chronicity of an ulceration. We present a novel application of tibialis anterior tendon lengthening for the adjunctive treatment

Trigger finger following partial flexor tendon laceration: Magnetic resonance imaging-assisted diagnosis.

INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic trigger finger is considerably rarer than normal trigger finger. The diagnosis is usually made on a clinical basis. This can be obscured; however, by concurrent pathological conditions. We report a case of post-traumatic trigger finger in which diagnosis was aided by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). PRESENTATION OF CASE: Our patient is a 32-year-old male who had a previous laceration with a subsequent surgery for infectious tenosynovitis. The MRI showed the impinging tendon tag. Surgical excision of the tag successfully solved the case. DISCUSSION: The use of im

Flexor Tendon Entrapment at the Malunited Base Fracture of the Proximal Phalanx of the Finger in Child: A Case Report.

The proximal phalangeal base is the most commonly fractured hand bone in children. Such fractures are rarely reported as irreducible due to flexor tendon entrapment. Here, we describe a patient who sustained a malunited fracture on the right fifth finger proximal phalanx with flexor tendon entrapment after treatment with closed reduction with K-wires fixation.A 13-year-old patient came to the clinic following a bicycle accident 6 weeks ago. He presented with flexion limitation in his small finger on the right hand. During physical examination, the patient felt no pain, and the neurovascular st

Cricket fast bowling workload patterns as risk factors for tendon, muscle, bone and joint injuries.

OBJECTIVE: To assess workload-related risk factors for injuries to particular tissue types in cricket fast bowlers. DESIGN: 235 fast bowler … depending on individual susceptibility to various injury types. This study supports the theory that tendons are at lowest risk with consistent workloads and susceptible to injury with sudden upgrades in workload. Gradual upgrades are recommended, particularly at the start of a bowler's career to reduce the risk of bone stress injury.
