BACKGROUND: Porcine epidemic diarrhea caused by porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) has led to serious economic losses to the swine industry worldwide. In this study, an oral recombinant Lactobacillus casei vaccine against PEDV infection targeting the intestinal microfold (M) cells and dendritic cells (DCs) for delivering the core neutralizing epitope (COE) of PEDV spike protein was developed with M cell-targeting peptide (Col) and dendritic cell-targeting peptide (DCpep). BACKGROUND: Chronic immune diseases, such as asthma, are highly prevalent. Currently available pharmaceuticals improve symptoms but cannot cure the disease. This prompted demands for alternatives to pharmaceuticals, such as probiotics, for the prevention of allergic disease. However, clinical trials have produced inconsistent results. AIM: The present study aims to compare the host immune responses induced by benign (meningiomas) and malignant (gliomas) brain tumors.
METHODS: Peripheral blood samples from 8 meningioma and 7 glioma patients collected pre- and post operatively were assessed for cell-mediated immunity, humoral immunity and IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-a expression. OBJECTIVE: To examine the effects of suplatast tosilate (IPD-1151T), a Th2 cytokine inhibitor recently recognized to improve the symptoms in patients with interstitial cystitis (IC), in a rat model of HCl-induced chronic cystitis, to elucidate the possible mechanisms by which the drug improves the symptoms of IC.
