Maxillary canine-first premolar transposition in the permanent dentition.

Maxillary canine premolar transposition is the most frequently reported transposition type, which many orthodontists face. Although correcting the transposed tooth order is not advised after the eruption of the permanent tooth, several articles published in the last decade demonstrated nonextraction treatment of transposition using fixed mechanics. This article describes the nonextraction treatment of a complete transposition between a maxillary left canine and a first premolar, using similar mechanics as suggested earlier. The correct tooth order was established with a functional Class I cani

Bisphosphonates: case report of nonsurgical periodontal therapy and osteochemonecrosis.

The risk of developing osteochemonecrosis is increased in patients who are taking bisphosphonate drugs and must undergo extractions or other dental surgery. Because of the difficulty in predicting and preventing osteochemonecrosis and in managing patients after it has occurred, avoidance of surgery has been advised. This paper reports on the development of this complication in a patient who received nonsurgical periodontal treatment. Although it is believed that the risk of developing this severely debilitating complication is low when treating patients nonsurgically, practitioners must be abl

Survival characteristics of periodontally-involved teeth: a 40-year study.

Four hundred and fifty-five teeth that were judged clinically to have a questionable prognosis were observed over a 40-year span in 166 patients in a private practice. Therapy initially was debridement with oral hygiene instruction, followed by flap curettage procedures and preventive maintenance recall therapy. An assessment of compliance based on oral hygiene and recall attendance was also performed. A total of 55 (12%) teeth were lost with an average survival rate of 8.8 years prior to extraction. No teeth were lost during the first 2 years of observation. The majority of extracted teeth we

A Comparison of Computed Tomographic, Radiographic, Gross and Histological, Dental, and Alveolar Findings in 30 Abnormal Cheek Teeth from Equine Cadavers.

BACKGROUND: Equine cheek teeth disorders, especially pulpar/apical infections, can have very serious consequences due to the frequent extension of infection to the supporting bones and/or adjacent paranasal sinuses. Limited studies have assessed the accuracy of computed tomographic (CT) imaging in the diagnosis of these disorders, and no study has directly compared imaging and pathological findings of the alveoli of diseased equine cheek teeth. OBJECTIVE: To validate the accuracy of CT and radiographic imaging of cheek teeth disorders by comparing CT and radiographic imaging, gross and histol

Pattern of occurrence and treatment of impacted teeth at the Muhimbili National Hospital, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Impacted teeth predispose to periodontal disease and dental caries of adjacent teeth resulting in pain, discomfort and loss of function. This study analyzed the pattern of occurrence of impacted teeth, associated symptoms, treatment and complications of treatment in patients who presented at the Muhimbili National Hospital, Tanzania. METHOD: This was a crossectional descriptive study which utilized notes and x rays of patients who were treated for impacted teeth at the Oral and Maxillofacial firm in Muhimbili National Hospital over five years, from January 2005 to August 2010. The

Reduced functional loads alter the physical characteristics of the bone-periodontal ligament-cementum complex.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Adaptive properties of the bone-periodontal ligament-tooth complex have been identified by changing the magnitude of functional loads using small-scale animal models, such as rodents. Reported adaptive responses as a result of lower loads due to softer diet include decreased muscle development, change in structure-function relationship of the cranium, narrowed periodontal ligament space, and changes in the mineral level of the cortical bone and alveolar jaw bone and in the glycosaminoglycans of the alveolar bone. However, the adaptive role of the dynamic bone-periodon

An unusual case of dental infection by Pseudomonas aeruginosa causing a brain abscess: case report.

A brain abscess may result when dental infection reaches the brain through contiguous anatomic cavities such as the maxillary sinus, the ethmoid sinus and the orbital cavity. It is an important complication and should be treated aggressively. Such treatment would include the excision of the etiological factor, drainage and adjuvant antibiotic therapy. The present case concerns a 23 year old woman who presented at the General Hospital of Nova Iguaçu with complaints of pain in the right side of the face and was diagnosed with acute sinusitis. Antibiotics and analgesics were prescribed to treat t

Optimizing orthodontic treatment in patients taking bisphosphonates for osteoporosis.

Bisphosphonates have unique pharmacological characteristics unlike those of any other drug group. Millions of adults take oral bisphosphonates for long-term treatment of osteoporosis and osteopenia; some of these people will most likely also seek orthodontic treatment. Adverse dental effects from bisphosphonates have been reported, including decreased tooth movement, impaired bone healing, and osteonecrosis in the mandible and the maxilla. Osteonecrosis has been rarely observed after bisphosphonate use for osteoporosis. However, adverse drug effects might occur more frequently in orthodontic p

Comparative effects of fluoride-containing and remineralization-promoting agents on artificial gastric juice-induced bovine enamel erosion susceptibility: an in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a major risk factor for erosive tooth wear because repeated exposure of enamel to gastric acid promotes demineralization. This in vitro study evaluated the protective effects of fluoride-containing and remineralization-promoting agents on enamel erosion induced by simulated gastric acid challenge. METHODS: Eighty-four bovine enamel specimens were randomly assigned to seven groups (n = 12/group): a sound enamel control group, an erosion control group treated with distilled water, and five treatment groups receiving Natural-F gel (2.09% NaF,

Association Between Chewing Capacity and Mortality Risk: The Role of Diet and Ageing.

AIM: Masticatory dysfunction due to tooth loss is a potentially modifiable risk for mortality, but the pathway behind that remains to be investigated. This prospective study aimed to examine the role of diet and ageing in the associations between chewing capacity and long-term mortality. METHODS: Data were obtained from participants (aged ≥ 20) in the National Health Nutritional and Health Survey (NHANES 1999-2010, n = 22,900). The mortality follow-up ended on 31 December 2019. Chewing capacity was determined by the number of functional tooth units (FTUs). Diet information in NHANES was colle

A bioreactor-based platform for investigating the early response of human periodontal ligament stem cells to intermittent mechanical stretching.

During development and daily activities, biological tissues are frequently exposed to mechanical stimuli, which are crucial for tissue maintenance and regeneration. The periodontal ligament (PDL), which connects the tooth root to the alveolar bone of the jaw, is among the tissues most exposed to mechanical loading and has recently received increasing attention due to the rising prevalence of periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease that leads to the progressive destruction of tooth-supporting structures. Understanding the mechanobiology of PDL could be essential for guiding effective rege

Bacterial community modifies host genetics effect on early childhood caries.

BACKGROUND: By age five approximately one-fifth of children have early childhood caries (ECC). Both the oral microbiome and host genetics are thought to influence susceptibility. Whether the oral microbiome modifies genetic susceptibility to ECC has not been tested. We test whether the salivary bacteriome modifies the association of a polygenic score (PGS, a score derived from genomic data that summarizes genetic susceptibility to disease) for primary tooth decay on ECC in the Center for Oral Health Research in Appalachia 2 longitudinal birth cohort. METHODS: Children were genotyped using the

Contributions of increased osteopontin and hypophosphatemia to dentoalveolar defects in osteomalacic Hyp mice.

X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) is an inherited disorder caused by inactivating mutations in the PHEX gene leading to renal phosphate wasting, rickets and osteomalacia. XLH is also associated with dentoalveolar mineralization defects in tooth enamel, dentin and cementum, and in alveolar bone, which lead to an increased prevalence of dental abscesses, periodontal disease and tooth loss. Genetic mouse experiments, and deficiencies in XLH patient therapies where treatments do not fully ameliorate mineralization defects, suggest that other pathogenic mechanisms may exist in XLH. The mineralization
