Troubleshooting Foley Catheter Problems Using Point-of-Care Ultrasound.

BACKGROUND: Foley catheter problems are a common reason for patients to present to the Emergency Department (ED). While replacement of the Foley catheter is a common approach, a more nuanced approach can be taken using point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) to avoid unnecessary exchanges and guide focused interventions. OBJECTIVES: This article summarizes potential diagnoses and solutions to Foley catheter problems in the ED, aided by use of POCUS. DISCUSSION: POCUS can visualize and diagnose causes of decreased or absent urine drainage, hematuria, and balloon malfunction, offering an advantage ov

Effectiveness of endourological management of ureteral stenosis in kidney transplant patients: EAU-YAU kidney transplantation working group collaboration.

PURPOSE: Ureteral stenosis (US) in kidney transplant (KT) recipients is associated with poorer long-term graft survival. Surgical repair is the standard of care, and endoscopic treatment represents an alternative for stenosis < 3 cm. We aimed to determine the effectiveness and safety of endourological management of US in KT patients and predictors of failure. METHODS: A retrospective multicenter study was conducted in four European referral centers, including all KT patients with US managed endoscopically between 2009 and 2021. Clinical success was defined as the absence of upper urinary trac

The effectiveness of high-fidelity simulation methods to gain Foley catheterization knowledge, skills, satisfaction and self-confidence among novice nursing students: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The use of high-fidelity simulation (HFS) methods provides probable benefits and advantages for nursing students to retain knowledge, acquire skills, improve satisfaction, and gain self-confidence in a safe, realistic and supportive environment. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of HFS methods to develop Foley catheterization knowledge, skills, satisfaction and self-confidence among novice nursing students when compared to low-fidelity simulation (LFS). The specific aim was to examine the effects of outcome variables between the intervention group and the control group, through m

Digital insertion of Foley catheter 16F versus 22F versus 28F in unripe cervix labor induction: A randomized trial.

AIM: To explore digital insertion in dorsal recumbent position of 16F, 22F, or 28F catheter bores on insertion failure, duration, and pain in unripe cervix labor induction. METHODS: A randomized trial was performed in a University hospital in Malaysia. Term women scheduled for labor induction, Bishop score ≤ 5, singleton, cephalic presentation, intact membrane, and reassuring pre-induction fetal heart rate tracing were recruited. Women with known gross fetal anomaly, allergy to latex and inability to consent or language difficulty were excluded. Participants were randomized to 16F, 22F, or 28

Designing and assessing a urethral catheter skills workshop for intern doctors in a university teaching hospital.

BACKGROUND: Urethral catheterisation (UC) is a frequently performed medical procedure and catheter-related injuries can lead to significant morbidity for patients. The aims of this study are to assess interns' exposure to UC and to design, implement and assess a structured UC skills workshop for hospital interns. METHODS: A 10-item anonymous questionnaire on UC was distributed to interns in two university teaching hospitals. Respondents were invited to participate in a skills workshop. Teaching methods for correct UC technique included a lecture, a video tutorial and a simulated patient model

Foley catheter versus cervical double balloon for labor induction: a prospective randomized study.

OBJECTIVE: Cervical ripening by mechanical methods enhances labor induction success. We compared Cervical Ripening Double Balloon catheter (CRDB) to Foley catheter. STUDY DESIGN: This prospective blind study randomized 85 nulliparas and 95 multiparas to labor induction by either Foley catheter or CRDB. Primary outcomes were Bishop score increment, time from catheter withdrawal to delivery, and cesarean section rate. RESULTS: In multiparas, mean Bishop score increment between pre- and post-catheter was significantly higher in the CRDB catheter than in the Foley group (4.4 ± 1.9 and 3.4 ± 2.0,

The impact of a structured clinical training course on interns' self-reported confidence with core clinical urology skills.

BACKGROUND: Undergraduate training in core urology skills is lacking in many Irish training programmes. AIMS: Our aim was to assess newly qualified doctors' experience and confidence with core urological competencies. METHODS: A questionnaire survey covering exposure to urology and confidence with core clinical skills was circulated to all candidates. The group then attended a skills course covering male/female catheterisation, insertion of three-way catheters, bladder irrigation and management of long-term suprapubic catheters. The groups were re-surveyed following the course. RESULTS: For

[Advantages of foley catheter for nephrostomy tube after minimally invasive percutaneous nephrolithotomy].

To assess the advantages and nursing experience of foley catheter for nephrostomy tube after minimally invasive percutaneous nephrolithotomy (mPCNL).
Methods: From October 2015 to April 2016, the clinical data of 137 patients, who were diagnosed with upper urinary tract calculi and need to perform mPCNL, were collected and randomized into 2 groups: a foley catheter group (research group, n=69) and a normal nephrostomy tube group (control group, n=68). The patients in research group used foley catheter for nephrostomy tube, while those in the control group used normal nephrostomy tube. Bleedin

Progress of labor in women induced with misoprostol versus the Foley catheter.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate and compare the duration and progress of labor in women induced with misoprostol vs Foley catheter plus oxytocin. STUDY DESIGN: We performed a retrospective cohort study of labor progress among 617 consecutive term pregnancies induced with misoprostol (n = 503) or Foley catheter plus oxytocin (n = 114) who completed the first stage of labor. Labor duration and progress in the entire cohort, and stratified by parity, were compared in multivariable interval-censored regression models adjusting for maternal obesity and birthweight. Repeated-measures analysis with 9th degre
