Leprosy skin lesions are described as hypochromic or erythematous macules, pale erythematous or reddish-brown plaques, papules, nodules, and diffuse cutaneous infiltration, depending on the clinical form of the disease. They may be accompanied by hypo or anesthesia, alopecia, and hypo or anhidrosis. Verrucous lesions are now quite uncommon in leprosy. The literature is sparse, with only 25 reported cases of this association, especially in the lepromatous pole of the disease. This work is a report on two cases of lepromatous leprosy of long evolution, coursing with vegetant verrucous lesions.

A young man presented with a 2-month history of fever and malaise. Cardiac auscultation revealed the presence of a diastolic murmur. Subsequently, a cardiac echocardiogram was done, which showed a large vegetation adherent to an anterior mitral leaflet. The blood culture was positive for Brucella species. The patient was given antibiotic therapy for brucellosis and referred for surgery. Brucella endocarditis is one of the rarest, yet most notorious complications of this infection. This condition requires a high degree of clinical suspicion in order to facilitate prompt diagnosis and treatment.

An 8-year-old boy presented to the pediatric dermatology service with an elevated, moist and vegetated pinkish mass, measuring 4 × 5 × 2 cm in diameter, located in the scrotum. The lesion has been gradually increasing in size showing a recent accelerated growth. Excisional biopsy demonstrated the histological picture of syringocystadenoma papilliferum (SCAP). The interest of this report lies in the rarity of syringocystadenoma papilliferum, its unusual presentation in the scrotum not yet reported in pediatric literature, and the importance of differential diagnoses in this location.

Production of biosurfactant can be substantially increased by the addition of precursors like vegetable oils, petroleum products, and other water-insoluble substances. Pseudomonas Ptm+ strain produces biosurfactant in the presence of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), which specifically emulsifies HCH, a recalcitrant organochlorine pesticide. Addition of previously produced crude biosurfactant by the same organism as a precursor instead of HCH increased production of biosurfactants with a decrease in the total fermentation time from 32 to 24 h. The main objective of this paper was to find alternativ

A total of 875 nymphal and adult Ixodes ricinus ticks and 148 adult Dermacentor reticulatus ticks were collected by flagging lower vegetation in the Lublin region (eastern Poland) and examined for the presence of RNA of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) by nested RT-PCR. The minimum infection rate of I. ricinus ticks with TBEV amounted to 1.6% while the infection rate of D. reticulatus ticks was 10.8%. The results suggest that D. reticulatus may be a potential vector of TBEV in Central Europe.

About 60% of magnesium in human body is present in the skeleton. Various foods are containing magnesium. The major sources are foods of plant origin like grain, vegetable and pulse. EAR (estimated average requirement) and RDA (recommended dietary allowance) are set for age 1 year or over in Japan. There may be a large number of people who have inadequate intake of magnesium judging by the results of the national nutrition survey. Adequate intakes of magnesium and also other nutrients related bone health are desired.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis, previously known as histiocytosis X, is a disease whose clinical presentation varies. Although it is uncommon, Langerhans cell histiocytosis may involve the perianal region. We report the case of a 2-year-old boy who presented with perianal ulcerated vegetative lesions and seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp. Biopsy of the lesions showed Langerhans cell histiocytosis. This patient did not have any other organ involvement, which is rare. The outcome was favourable with vinblastine and corticoids.

The authors analyze rare lung diseases and describe a clinicomorphological case of bronioloalveolar carcinoma of the lung as one of rare bronchopulmonary diseases. According to the WHO histological classification (1999), the tumor is adenocarcinoma that is represented solely by bronchioloalveolar vegetations as a monolayer of the cells lining the walls of pre-existing alveoles without invasion of the stroma, vessels, and pleura. In 1876 Mallaser first described this rare disease in cloven-hoofed animals (Artiodactyla) in Scandinavian countries. Subsequently cases of this disease were also desc

A five-year-old boy with a structurally normal heart and recent history of adenotomy and gastroenteritis presented with Staphylococcus aureus pancarditis including endocarditis of the tricuspid valve and abscess of the ventricular septum. Surgical treatment consisted of debridement of the valvar vegetations and of the septal abscess. A seven-day continuous mediastinal irrigation with iodine solution was conducted to eliminate local infection sites as well as to prevent from constrictive pericarditis. The patient recovered uneventfully and is in excellent clinical condition with no residues one

Infective endocarditis caused by Proteus mirabilis is rare and is fatal in most cases. A case of a 64-year-old man presenting with fever, dysuria, and murmur is reported. P mirabilis endocarditis was diagnosed based on clinical presentation, blood culture findings, and the presence of a large mitral valve vegetation seen on echocardiogram. The patient survived after long-term antibiotics and surgical replacement of the mitral valve. The clinical characteristics and complications from reported cases of P mirabilis endocarditis are reviewed.

An unusual clinical appearance and course of pyoderma gangraenosum (PG) in a 35-year-old woman is presented. Signs of both the ulcerative and vegetative forms of PG were expressed. The association of two systemic diseases, the autoimmune thyreopathy and the hyperandrogenic syndrome were observed in a female. The recommended conventional therapy for PG: corticosteroids, antibiotics, cyclosporine and cyclophosphamide yielded a poor response, whereas after thyroidectomy and reaching an euthyroid state the symptoms receded. This close association of PG and autoimmune thyreopathy supports the autoi

We report a case of a baby with Down Syndrome and history of a corrective surgery for a duodenum stenosis, which was subjected to a parenteral nutrition with central venous catheter. A two-dimensional color Doppler echocardiographic examination revealed a voluminous oval-shaped mobile inhomogeneous mass adhering to the tricuspid valve. The intraoperative pathology showed that it was a large fungal vegetation. The probable source of Candida Albicans was an infected intravenous catheter. We wish to remark the role of echocardiography in the diagnosis and choice of timing of surgery.

"Lumpy jaw" of artiodactyls and macropods, although often considered a manifestation of actinomycosis, is actually an osteomyelitis, perhaps commencing with a dental root abscess or trauma to the jaw. Anaerobes may be cultured from the lesions, and vegetable matter may be impacted in them. It is a chronic disease and difficult to treat. Successful treatment may include draining the abscess, cleaning the cavity with saline and antibiotics, flushing with a combination of hydrogen peroxide-sodium hypochlorite and Betadine, and apicoectomy and endodontic filling when active inflammation has subsid

A case of the Austrian syndrome in a 23 year-old male, alcoholic and non-vaccinated against pneumococci, is reported. Autopsy study disclosed alcoholic liver disease, endocarditis, meningitis and pneumonia. Pneumococci were observed in the vegetations found in the mitral and aortic valves, in the coronarian septic embolus with acute myocardial infarction, and in the spleen abscess. The authors highlight the need for prevention measures against S. pneumoniae infection in alcoholics, suggesting that clinicians be alert to this infrequent but severe syndrome that bears Austrian's name.

Inversion of the left atrial appendage is a rare complication after open-heart surgery. To our knowledge only 16 cases, besides that reported herein, have been described so far. Echocardiographically, the inverted left atrial appendage appears as a mass mimicking a thrombus, a vegetation or a tumor of the left atrium. Lack of awareness of this entity can result in a misdiagnosis and unnecessary procedures. The case here reported deals with an inverted left atrial appendage occurring in an infant after repair of an atrial septal defect.

Most helocobacteria die as a result of eradication therapy. However, a negligible amount of them revert to the non-cultivated state and remain in the form of coccoids. Based on the literature analysis it has been proved that coccoid forms of H. pylori are viable and their basic properties are similar to those of vegetative helocobacteria forms. It has been suggested for the first time that it is necessary to find therapeutic means for having an impact on helocobacteria, which are in the coccoid form, in addition to standard methods of treatment of helicobacteriosis and its consequences.

We report a case of the superficial granulomatous (vegetating) form of pyoderma gangrenosum, involving the forehead and the left temporal area in a 44-year-old woman. No association with other pathologies could be found. Lesions responded dramatically to systemic ciclosporine (5 mg/kg/day), and complete healing was reached after 6 months. Doses were tapered progressively. Treatment was discontinued after 4.5 years. Discontinuation was not followed by recurrence of the disease. Healing is maintained after another 4.5 years of follow-up.

Campylobacter fetus subspecies fetus has a predilection for vascular endothelium. This report describes a case of a prosthetic valve infective endocarditis due to this microorganism. Despite adequate antibiotic combination treatment, valvular vegetations and perivalvular suppurative complications evolved, leading to valvular dysfunction, heart failure and death. Only three other cases of C. fetus prosthetic valve endocarditis have been described previously. Campylobacter fetus bacteraemia must be considered cautiously, because of the risk of late cardiac or vascular complications.

A 64-year-old male patient was referred to our hospital for massive mitral regurgitation after infective endocarditis. Echocardiography revealed vegetation on the atrial surface of the midst of the anterior mitral leaflet. At operation it was found that the anterior leaflet was perforated due to infection, and the posterior leaflet was prolapsed resulting from elongated chordae. Anterior leaflet was patched with autologous pericardium, and posterior leaflet was repaired with rectangler resection. An autologous pericardial strip was sutured to posterior mitral annulus. The patient survived the
