Motion perimetry identifies nerve fiber bundlelike defects in ocular hypertension.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether patients with ocular hypertension (OHT) have elevated motion perimetry thresholds. DESIGN: Motion perimetry uses a customized computer graphics program to detect the ability to identify a coherent shift in position of 50% of dots in a defined circular area against a background of fixed dots. Motion size threshold is defined as the smallest circular area in which dot motion is detected. Subjects respond by touching the area of the computer monitor with a light pen where motion stimuli are perceived. Reaction times (milliseconds) to stimuli and localization error

Diagnostic value of 33 Hz steady-state visual evoked potentials in low-vision children.

Pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials elicited by patterns of 60' and 20' checks and 33 Hz steady-state flash visual evoked potentials were recorded in low-vision children (visual acuity less than 20/120) with optic atrophy (18 eyes), amblyopia (18 eyes), macular degeneration (7 eyes) and controls (24 eyes). Steady-state visual evoked potentials were non-recordable in 17 out of 18 eyes of optic atrophy patients and normal in other children. Abnormalities of pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials were similar in all groups of patients. 33 Hz steady-state flash visual evoked potentials ar

Intracranial meningioma: an exercise in differential diagnosis.

A 48-year-old man presented with a unilateral visual disturbance including reduced visual acuity and decreased sensitivity of the temporal visual field. He was initially diagnosed as having optic neuritis. Four months later the condition not only remained unresolved, but showed signs of progression. This presentation was atypical for optic neuritis and further detailed investigation was warranted. The patient's symptoms, along with multi-channel topographic visual evoked potentials and quantitative visual field analysis, were more indicative of a diagnosis of a space occupying lesion. A CT sca

[Neurootological findings in multiple sclerosis (author's transl)].

After clinical examination of 104 patients with multiple sclerosis sensory-motor dysfunctions of the extremities turned out to be the predominant symptoms. Hypacusis, tinnitus and dizziness were mentioned by less than 15% of the patients. The investigation of the vestibular system showed often an enhanced caloric reaction and dysfunctions of the optokinetic mystagmus as well as the eye tracking test. Moreover the threshold for temperature and gustatory sensations was often enhanced. Hypacusis was found only in a few patients, in less than 30% the SISI and the tone decay test indicated neuronal

Agreement Between a Mobile Self-Administered Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment Screening Tool and Geriatrician-Administered Assessment: Cross-Sectional Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) is a widely recommended, multidimensional approach for guiding clinical decision-making and management in older adults. However, its implementation remains limited by a shortage of geriatric specialists, the complexity of geriatric care, and the increasing demands of an aging population. Mobile self-administered tools offer a potential strategy to expand access to multidimensional geriatric evaluation, particularly in resource-limited settings. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and agreement of a mobile self-administer

Comparative evaluation of root canal morphology in mandibular first premolars with deep radicular grooves using direct vision, dental operating microscope, 2D radiographic visualisation and micro-computed tomography.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of clinically applicable diagnostic methods such as Direct Vision (DV), Dental Operating Microscope (DOM), and two-dimensional (2D) radiographs in detecting canal orifices and root canal configurations in mandibular first premolars with deep radicular grooves. The study also aimed to compare these methods with micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) to better understand their diagnostic capabilities and to assess the applicability of the Ahmed et al. (2017) classification system across different imaging modalities. METHODS

Case Report: Treatment of delayed tremor episodes in a patient with DPPX antibody encephalitis.

INTRODUCTION: Autoimmune encephalitis is a neurological disease caused by abnormal autoimmune mechanisms, characterized by a range of symptoms such as psychiatric and behavioral abnormalities, cognitive impairment, memory decline, and seizures. It is primarily identified by the presence of autoantibodies against neuronal surface antigens in the cerebrospinal fluid. This disease is relatively rare in clinical settings, and its diagnosis remains challenging, with fewer than a hundred cases reported to date. Particularly, cases of Anti-DPPX encephalitis presenting with delayed myoclonus and blurr

Predicting early reading skills from pre-reading measures of dorsal stream functioning.

It is well documented that good reading skills may be dependent upon adequate dorsal stream processing. However, the degree to which dorsal stream deficits play a causal role in reading failure has not been established. This study used coherent motion and visual frequency doubling to examine whether dorsal stream sensitivity measured before the commencement of formal reading instruction can predict emerging literacy skills in Grade 1. We demonstrate that over age, IQ and Kindergarten Letter knowledge, pre-reading measures of dorsal stream functioning, as assessed by frequency doubling sensitiv

Scanning laser polarimetry with variable corneal compensation and detection of glaucomatous optic neuropathy.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of scanning laser polarimetry (SLP) parameters provided by commercially available GDx with variable corneal compensator (VCC) to discriminate between healthy and glaucomatous eyes. METHODS: Sixty-five healthy and 59 glaucomatous age-matched patients underwent a complete ophthalmological evaluation, an achromatic automated perimetry (AAP), and SLP with GDx-VCC. One randomly selected eye from each subject was considered. All glaucomatous eyes had reproducible visual field defects. Mean values (+/- SD) of all SLP-VCC parameters measur
