Minimally invasive surgical approach in children treated for oesophageal atresia is associated with attention problems at school age: a prospective cohort study.

The long-term neurodevelopment of children born with oesophageal atresia (OA) is unclear. Therefore, we assessed the neurocognitive domains and their predictors. Patients born with OA between February 2006 and December 2014, who were routinely seen at eight years as part of a structured prospective longitudinal follow-up program, were included. Main outcome measures were need for school support, performance in various neurocognitive domains and potential predictors of neurocognitive problems. We analysed data of 65 children with a mean (SD) age of 8.1 (0.2) years, of whom 89% with OA type C. Improving cognitive function in Chinese children with ADHD and/or RD through computerized working memory training.

BACKGROUND: Prior research has found that children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and reading difficulties (RD) are at an elevated risk of developing further cognitive deficits and developmental challenges [1]. ADHD and RD are characterized by a deficit in working memory, which negatively affects learning and behavior. The main aims of this study were to design a working memory training app and examine its effectiveness through a 5-week training program in Chinese children with ADHD and/or RD. METHODS: There were three experimental groups, with 26 participants in the ADH

Early visual word processing in children with ADHD: An ERP study.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and reading disability (RD) co-occur frequently. Although reading comprehension difficulties in children with ADHD have been well documented, early visual word processing remains unclear. AIMS: This study investigated event-related potential (ERP) responses to visual stimuli in children with ADHD (6-12 years) by focusing on the N170 component, which signifies rapid, automatic, and specialized processing of visual words. PROCEDURES: Twenty children with ADHD and twenty typically developing (TD) children matched for sex and age perfor

The Phenotypic Spectrum of Desanto-Shinawi Syndrome: A Comparative Report of the First Reported Case in Turkey.

DeSanto-Shinawi syndrome (DESSH, OMIM #616708) is a rare genetic disorder caused by pathogenic variants in the WAC gene. This syndrome is characterized by a wide range of physical and neurological symptoms including dysmorphic features, developmental delay, intellectual disability, and behavioral abnormalities. DESSH was described by DeSanto in 2015, and since then, only a few dozen cases have been reported worldwide. Recent research has focused on identifying the underlying genetic cause of the syndrome as well as exploring potential treatments. In this report, we describe a female case who h

Behavioral Parent Training for School-Aged Children With ADHD: A Systematic Review of Randomized Control Trials.

BACKGROUND: All guidelines for the treatment of ADHD in children include behavioral parent training in combination with other strategies. In the past, several systematic reviews have been carried out that were either outdated or not sufficiently specific to ADHD. We wanted to conduct a new review focusing on a specific ADHD population of school age (4-12 years) and on behavioral and cognitive programs. We aimed to test our hypothesis that behavioral parent training would improve parents' difficulties, children's symptomatology, and the quality of life of families with ADHD. METHODS: PUBMED, P

Characteristics and outcomes of cases with methylphenidate abuse, dependence or withdrawal: an analysis of spontaneous reports in EudraVigilance.

Methylphenidate (MPH) is a central nervous stimulant, which is mainly used in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy. In recent years, rising MPH prescription volumes have drawn attention to possible misuse. We analyzed data on suspected MPH abuse, dependence or withdrawal reported to the EudraVigilance database (1996-2019), comparing case characteristics (e.g. age, indications and outcome). In 1531 cases from 35 countries (median: 29 years, 57.6% male), 42.3% had been diagnosed with ADHD and 8.0% with narcolepsy. Narcolepsy cases were older than ADHD cases (mean age: 4

Analyzing the network of parent-rated ADHD symptoms before and 2 weeks after the onset of pharmaceutical treatment.

PROBLEM: Via a network analysis approach, following 2 weeks of the medication Ritalin, the present study investigated the quality of symptom interactions and the pattern of behavior changes to identify locations of functional weaknesses in the network interactions of symptomology. METHODS: Ritalin® prescribed for 112 children (aged 4-14) with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as diagnosed by five child and adolescent psychiatrists. Their parents completed Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham-IV questionnaire (SNAP-IV) before and after Ritalin® onset as the pre and post-test, respectively.

Activity-Based Prospective Memory in ADHD during Motor Sleep Inertia.

Prospective memory (PM) is essential in everyday life because it concerns the ability to remember to perform an intended action in the future. Individuals diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often show poor performance in PM. Because age can be confounding, we decided to test PM in ADHD patients (children and adults) and healthy controls (children and adults). We examined 22 children (four females; mean age = 8.77 ± 1.77) and 35 adults (14 females; mean age = 37.29 ± 12.23) with ADHD, in addition to 92 children (57 females; mean age = 10.13 ± 0.42) and 95 adults (57

Overactivated contextual visual perception and response to a single dose of methylphenidate in children with ADHD.

The pathogenesis of overactivated visual perception in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) remains unclear, which is interpreted as a cognitive compensation. The existing studies have proposed that perceptual abnormalities in neurodevelopmental disorders are associated with dysfunction of the contextual knowledge system, which influences the development and formation of perception. We hypothesized that alterations in contextual states may also be responsible for inducing perceptual abnormalities in ADHD. Therefore, the present study evaluated the characteristics of pre-stimulus alp

Prospective associations between ADHD symptoms and physical conditions from early childhood to adolescence: a population-based longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: The co-occurrence between attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and physical conditions is frequent but often goes unrecognised. Most available evidence on the links between ADHD and physical conditions relies on cross-sectional studies. Understanding temporal sequences of associations is key to inform appropriate treatment and preventive strategies. We aimed to assess possible longitudinal associations between ADHD symptoms and a broad range of physical conditions, adjusting for several confounding factors. METHODS: Participants came from the population-based Quebec Lon

Multi-Trajectories of Conduct Problems, Hyperactivity/Inattention, and Peer Problems Across Childhood: Results from the Growing Up in Scotland Birth Cohort.

Using a person-centred approach, this study inspected multi-trajectories of conduct problems, hyperactivity/inattention and peer problems, and associated risk factors for group membership. The sample included 3,578 children (50.8% males) from a population birth cohort in Scotland (Growing Up in Scotland). The parental version of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) was used when children were 4, 5, 6, 7, and 10 years old. Antecedent factors at the perinatal, child, and family levels were collected using parental reports, observation, and standardised assessments at 10, 24, and 36

Effect of stimulants on final adult height.

BACKGROUND: The use of stimulant medications for treatment of ADHD has raised concern as to whether they adversely impact linear growth. Previous studies have indicated that stimulant medications may suppress growth for a short period after treatment initiation; however, more information is needed to evaluate the long-term effects on final adult stature. This mini review aims to evaluate the effect of stimulant medications on final adult height in children with ADHD. CONTENTS: We performed a literature review across PubMed/MEDLINE database. Only articles that included data on final adult heig

Mental health and driving behaviour of students and alumni of a university in the United Arab Emirates: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The United Arab Emirates has set the goal to reduce traffic-related deaths to 3 per 100 000 people by 2021. To do this, authorities must assess the factors related to risky driving behaviour. AIMS: To verify if there are any correlations between driving behaviour and certain variables, including years of driving experience, daily hours of sleep, general markers of mental health, and symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHODS: Two hundred and seventy-five participants responded to a survey made up of the Manchester driver behaviour questionnaire, the gene

Survey on centres and procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of adult ADHD in public services in Italy.

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often persists into adulthood. Although its persistence and relative high prevalence, ADHD in adults is often underdiagnosed and undertreated in Italy, leading to poor clinical and functional outcomes, and higher costs of illness. The aims of the study were to identify the Italian mental health services for ADHD in adults, describe the diagnostic and treatment procedures they follow, and compare this offer with the recommendations of the German and English guidelines. The centres, that adopt a clinical and assessment protocol for adult ADHD diagn

Intervention response among preschoolers with ADHD: The role of emotion understanding.

Emotion recognition/understanding (ERU), which is the ability to correctly identify emotional states in others as well as one's self, plays a key role in children's social-emotional development and is often targeted in early intervention programs. Yet the extent to which young children's ERU predicts their intervention response remains unclear. The current study examined the extent to which initial levels of ERU and changes in ERU predicted intervention response to a multimodal early intervention program (Summer Treatment Program for Pre-Kindergarteners; STP-PreK). Participants included 230 yo

Intragroup differences and similarities in performance on rapid automatized naming tasks in children with ADHD symptoms, children with reading disabilities, and controls.

Introduction Rapid automatized naming (RAN) is the ability to name, as fast as possible, symbols such as letters, digits and figures. The present study aimed to investigate intragroup performance patterns on RAN tasks in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms alone, children with reading disability (RD) alone and controls with typical development. Methods A total of 216 Brazilian children between 8 to 11 years old were selected from public schools located in two Brazilian capitals, namely Porto Alegre and Belo Horizonte, to participate in the study. Teratogen update: Amphetamines.

Amphetamines are synthetic noncatecholamine sympathomimetic amines that act as psychostimulants. They have been prescribed for the treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), narcolepsy, and additional health conditions. Amphetamines are also drugs of abuse. Some experimental animal studies suggested adverse developmental effects of amphetamines, including structural malformations. These effects were most often observed in experimental animals at higher dose levels than those used for treatment or abuse and at dose levels that produce maternal toxicity. Controlled studies of

Friendship and social functioning following early institutional rearing: The role of ADHD symptoms.

Early institutional rearing is associated with increased risk for subsequent peer relationship difficulties, but the underlying mechanisms have not been identified. Friendship characteristics, social behaviors with peers, normed assessments of social problems, and social cue use were assessed in 142 children (mean age = 10.06, SD = 2.02; range 7-13 years), of whom 67 were previously institutionalized (PI), and 75 were raised by their biological families. Anxiety and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms, often elevated among PI children, were examined as potential mediators
