The recent outbreak of Omicron strains of coronavirus disease urged the search for novel treatments from natural products such as Epilobium species. The present work reports a comparative HPLC-DAD study of the polyphenolic composition of the crude extracts of Epilobium angustifolium and Epilobium hirsutum. Oenothein B, gallic acid, hyperoside, and isoquercitin were the dominant phenolic compounds. E. hirsutum methanol extract showed a high radical scavenging activity as demonstrated by the HPLC-ABTS assay due to its richness in phenolic compounds. The polysaccharide-rich extracts and water ext

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis (CE), is a parasitic zoonosis caused by Echinococcus granulosus (E. granulosus) larvae in liver and lungs of both humans and animals. Surgical intervention is the mainstay for CE treatment, using scolicidal agents that inactivate live protoscolices. This study evaluated the scolicidal effects of Silybum marianum ethanolic extract and its combination with albendazole in vitro for the first time. Moreover, in a literature review, we investigated the effects of a wide range of Iranian medicinal plants on protoscolices of E. granulosus.
METHODS: S. marianum ethan

Salicornia herbacea L. (glasswort, tungtungmadi in Korean), a halophyte that grows in salt marshes and muddy seashores along the western coast of Korea, has been used as a seasoning vegetable and a folk medicine for intestinal ailments, nephropathy, and hepatitis. As the salt-tolerant herb was reported to contain antioxidants, including tungtungmadic acid, quercetin, and chlorogenic acid, we hypothesized that the ethanolic extract of S. herbacea L. (SH extract) enriched with antioxidative compounds will have neuroprotective activity. The herbal extract and its methylene chloride (MC) fraction

Apples and pears are widely consumed, polyphenol-rich fruits, yet whole-fruit extraction using green solvents remains underexplored relative to by-product-focused approaches. Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) were investigated as green extraction media for polyphenols from apple and pear. NADES were characterized (FTIR, DSC, viscosity, density) and extracts were evaluated for polyphenol content and profile (HPLC, LC-MS/MS), antioxidant activity (DPPH, ABTS, square-wave voltammetry) and cytotoxicity. Hydrophilic choline chloride-based NADES significantly enhanced polyphenol recovery compar

Bacterial outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) are emerging as natural nanocarriers for cancer therapy due to their ability to deliver bioactive molecules and to penetrate the tumor microenvironment. This study investigated the combined effects of Escherichia coli-derived OMVs and Myristica fragrans extract on pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) cells. OMVs (50 µg/mL) and M. fragrans extract (IC₅₀: 25 µg/mL) significantly reduced PANC-1 cell viability and increased LDH release after 24 h of treatment (p < 0.01). The combination treatment induced oxidative stress, evidenced by increased total oxi

Virtual histology using X-ray micro-computed tomography offers 3D tissue visualization, yet lacks the specificity of conventional histology, where targeted stains selectively highlight features like cell nuclei. While X-ray-compatible stains have now been developed, an unsolved challenge is the quantitative separation of their signal from the underlying tissue signal, which is essential for tissue-specific imaging. This work presents the first method enabling 3D stain mapping on a histologically relevant scale. Applied to murine kidneys stained with different hematein-lead complexes, the appro

Selective discovery of receptor-binding ligands from complex natural matrices remains a significant analytical challenge for bioactive compound identification and lead discovery. Herein, a three-dimensional biomimetic screening strategy was established. Cells with high α1A-adrenergic receptor (AR) expression were employed as the screening tool and incorporated into a three-dimensional agarose network to prepare a biomimetic α1A AR stationary phase. This screening strategy involves the incorporation of a large number of cells into a three-dimensional network, followed by analysis and identifica

Ischemia-reperfusion injury is a leading cause of acute kidney injury (AKI), which is characterized by high morbidity and mortality, as well as a substantial risk of progression to chronic kidney disease (CKD). Although supportive care has improved considerably, effective disease-modifying therapies are still lacking. Therefore, the development of new therapeutic drugs for ischemic AKI is crucial. Active metabolites derived from medicinal plants, owing to their low toxicity and multi-target characteristics, are promising candidates for ischemic AKI therapy. This study reviews the pathogenesis

The primary function of the intestine is to absorb essential nutrients while protecting the body from harmful agents. The small intestine extracts amino acids, sugars, lipids, vitamins, and minerals from digested food. The large intestine or colon reclaims water and electrolytes, compacting the remaining material for elimination. For both organs, the epithelium acts as a selective barrier - permeable to nutrients and water, restrictive to microbes, antigens, and toxins. This balance of absorption and protection is essential for life. Interestingly, this barrier is not operating in static, mech

Allergies are a common health issue affecting many people around the world, especially in developed countries. They occur when the immune system overreacts to substances that are usually harmless. Some common allergic conditions include asthma, sinus infections, skin rashes, food allergies, hay fever, severe allergic reactions, eczema, swelling, and reactions to medications or insect stings. The causes of these allergies are complex and often linked to genetics, which can lead to heightened immune responses known as atopy. Throughout history, plant extracts have been used for various purposes,

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons and the aggregation of α-synuclein. Neuroinflammation is triggered by the activation of microglia and astrocytes, which release pro-inflammatory factors that exacerbate neuronal damage. This inflammatory state also disrupts iron homeostasis, leading to the occurrence of ferroptosis. Ferroptosis is characterized by lipid peroxidation of cell membranes and iron overload. Abnormal accumulation of iron in the brain increases oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation, further aggr

CutA, a conserved protein across all domains of life, has been suggested to be involved in copper tolerance in bacteria, though recent studies have questioned this association, leaving its biological role unknown. To clarify its function, we studied cutA knockout mutants from two phylogenetically distant species, Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942 and Escherichia coli, using phenotyping combined with metabolomics. To investigate the interaction of CutA with potential substrates and cofactors, we performed a series of native metabolomics experiments with CutA and cell extracts from which we ident…
