BACKGROUND: Bicycling injuries claim more than 900 lives each year in the United States, and the major cause of deaths is head injuries. Bicycle helmets can prevent head and brain injuries, yet helmet use rate remains low. Helmets are expensive, and their cost can be prohibitive. Using census and administrative agency data for 177 urban census tracts, variation in rates of officially reported child maltreatment is found to be related to structural determinants of community social organization: economic and family resources, residential instability, household and age structure, and geographic proximity of neighborhoods to concentrated poverty. General physicians' (GP) approach to the management of hypertension was assessed by a standard questionnaire. Each of the 42 physicians studied see about 42 patients in a clinic day. Over half do not usually measure the blood pressure (BP) of all new patients. A third do not investigate before starting therapy. A 24-year-old man was admitted with conjunctival hyperemia of the left eye and progressive chemosis and proptosis 1 month after a head injury. An angiogram showed an arterial-cavernous sinus fistula of the posterior communicating artery, which was treated with minicoils. DESIGN: Retrospective chart review of all weights over the previous 6 months and an in-depth examination of all residents who lost 5 or more pounds over that period.

A probe technique requiring convergent and divergent semantic behavior and representing five levels of communicative responsibility served as the research tool. We describe the epidemiology of meningococcal disease in Somerset and a community outbreak in one district. Fifty-seven cases of meningococcal disease occurred in residents of Somerset between 1 May 1990 and 30 April 1993 (incidence 4.7/100,000/year), of whom six died. This article describes an analysis of spouse concordance for major depression and for other depressive experiences. Respondents to a community survey of married men and women (N = 586 couples) completed a modified version of the Diagnostic Interview Schedule from which diagnoses of major depression and dysthymia were derived. In a geographically defined area sample of 141 long-term psychiatric patients in day care in south London, the relationship between tardive dyskinesia (TD) and other aspects of illness, treatment, and social and psychological functioning were studied. A rural Indian population of 50,055 was studied for the detection of congenital orthopaedic anomalies by a door-to-door survey. An incidence of 2.25 cases per 1000 population was found. Club foot was the commonest anomaly at 0.9 per 1000, followed by polydactyly and syndactyly at 0.45 and 0.38 cases per 1000. The most common anomaly found in females was a congenital short 4th metatarsal (0.24 per 1000).

87 perinatal deaths which occurred out of 1484 births in a rural area of Northern Nigeria over a 9 month period were reviewed. The perinatal mortality rate was 58.6 per 1000 births. Babies born to very young adolescent mothers aged between 10-14 years had the highest perinatal mortality of 375 per 1000 births.
