[Disorders of vascularization in para-epiphyseal groove humeral fractures and their clinical significance for the growing skeleton].

We analysed retrospectively 50 humerus fractures in the vicinity of elbow joint and 40 fractures of the proximal humerus with respect to possible injuries of the vessel pattern of the epiphyseal plate. The normal vessel pattern of the epiphyseal plate was examined postmortem on 8 foetus and newborns up to 6 months. We plastinated the affected regions and could compare symmetry of the vessel pattern in the epiphyseal plates as well as therapeutic consequences, especially after injuries of the elbow joint. Vascular disturbances in the case of young children, i.e. by fractures of the lateral oder…

Risk factors for complications and poor function after open reduction and fixation of olecranon fractures.

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment of olecranon fractures is associated with a high rate of complications, potential restricted elbow function, and the need for revision surgeries. The aim of this study was to evaluate risk factors for complications and reduced functional outcomes following surgical treatment. METHODS: All consecutive patients aged ≥18 years and treated at our level 1 trauma center for isolated open and closed olecranon fractures between January 2015 and March 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. Data on epidemiology, comorbidities, fracture type, treatment performed, and complica…

Treatment of Distal Third Humeral Shaft Fracture with Intramedullary Nail Combined with Anterior Minimally Invasive Plate Osteosynthesis.

OBJECTIVE: The treatment of distal third humeral shaft fracture is difficult. Studies have shown that anterior minimally invasive plate has … erative time, intraoperative blood loss, total incision length, fracture healing time, shoulder and elbow visual analogue scale (VAS) score, Constant-Murley shoulder function score, Mayo elbow function score, and complications were recorded and compared between the two groups. Two independent sample t-tests was used for follow-up, age, BMI, operation ti …

[Early treatment of high-voltage electric burn wound in the limbs].

OBJECTIVE: To summarize the experience of early treatment of high-voltage electric burn wounds in the limbs. METHODS: Fifty-four patients (50 males and 4 females, aged from 10 to 56 years) with high-voltage electric burn wounds in 97 limbs (67 upper limbs and 30 lower limbs) were hospitalized in our burn wards from January 2003 to December 2010. A total of 119 burn wounds in wrist-forearm, forearm-elbow-upper arm, shoulder-axillary region, ankle-foot, lower leg, around the knee, thigh-inguinal region were treated with incision for decompression within 10 days after burn. Under the premise of …

Distinct Motor Cortex Somatotopy in Experimental Alzheimer's Disease.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and related dementias (AD/RDs) impact cortical motor and sensory biology whereas the precise changes to these syste … hibited a significant expansion of motor cortical sites representing simple movements, specifically Elbow Flexion (p=0.0004) and Wrist Flexion (p=0.024). Mirror Visual Feedback Selectively Attenuates Crossover Fatigue in Distal Upper Limb Musculature: A Randomized Controlled Crossover Investigation Comparing Children and Adults.

This investigation examined whether mirror visual feedback modulates crossover fatigue magnitude during unilateral handgrip exertion and whe … e bilateral force production was quantified pre-intervention and post-intervention across handgrip, elbow flexion, and elbow extension domains. Linear mixed-effects models with participant-specific random intercepts and slopes quantified Condition × Time × Limb interactions. In the non-exercised contralateral limb, linear mixed-effects models demonstrat …

Biomechanical Strength of 3 Prototype Designs of Vented Long Arm Fiberglass Casts.

BACKGROUND: The standard nonsurgical treatment of pediatric elbow fractures uses a long arm cast for immobilization. Casts are typically worn for 4 to 6 weeks, during which time they can retain moisture, causing discomfort and skin maceration, especially in warm weather. In this study, we evaluated the biomechanical strength of long arm casts with material gaps designed to improve ventilation. METHODS: Three modified long arm cast designs were evaluated for structural integrity compared with standard casts. We refer to these designs as (1) the "ellipse," featuring an elliptical gap at the pos…

Bifocal Radial Fracture/Dislocation and Distal Ulnar Fracture-A Rare Case of Proximal Forearm Instability Not Yet Classified and Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Monteggia fractures, first described by Giovanni Battista Monteggia, involve a fracture of the proximal ulna with anterior dis … ulna, and ligament reconstruction. At two-year follow-up, the patient demonstrated full recovery of elbow flexion-extension and satisfactory forearm function. A narrative literature review was also conducted, focusing on hybrid injury variants. RESULTS: Intraoperative examination under anesthesia revealed good elbow stability with 130° flexion, 15° ext …

Development of a quantitative assessment for abnormal flexor synergy index in patients with stroke: a validity and responsiveness study.

BACKGROUND: Arm-lifting movements (shoulder flexion) are essential for upper extremity rehabilitation after a stroke. Abnormal flexor synergy (elbow flexion) is frequently observed during shoulder flexion, impeding functional improvement. However, no quantitative method exists for assessing abnormal flexor synergy. This study investigated the validity and responsiveness of a newly developed index to quantitatively evaluate abnormal flexor synergy. METHODS: Participants included 103 patients (mean age: 58.0 ± 10.1 years; 64 men, 39 women) with stroke. Using three-dimensional coordinate data du…

Hand-Grip Strength and Return to Heavy Manual Work at a Mean 5-Year Follow-up After Arthroscopic Release of Recalcitrant Lateral Epicondylitis.

BACKGROUND: Lateral epicondylitis of the elbow is a common degenerative disorder in middle-aged patients. Surgery is reserved for patients who do not respond to nonoperative treatment. PURPOSE: To evaluate hand-grip strength and return to heavy manual activities in patients engaged in work requiring heavy lifting after arthroscopic release of refractory lateral epicondylitis. STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4. METHODS: The study included consecutive patients who underwent arthroscopic release of the extensor carpi radialis brevis tendon to treat recalcitrant lateral epicondyli…

How one treats lateral epicondylitis - a survey among Brazilian orthopedists.

BACKGROUND: Lateral epicondylitis (LE), also known as tennis elbow, is the most common painful elbow condition. It affects approximately 1-3% of adults. There are various possible treatments described in the literature, but evidence to support a gold standard management protocol is lacking. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate how Brazilian orthopaedists diagnose and treat lateral epicondylitis and compare these results with the available evidence. METHODS: This is an observational, analytical, cross-sectional study. A questionnaire was prepared to obtain information from th…

Relationship between humeral retroversion and baseball positions during elementary and junior-high school.

BACKGROUND: Humeral retroversion is greater in the dominant shoulder than in the nondominant shoulder in baseball players. However, the effect of different baseball positions during childhood on humeral retroversion remains unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the following: (1) the relationship between humeral retroversion and baseball positions played during elementary and junior-high schools; (2) the association between humeral retroversion and the prevalence of pain during the medical checkup and self-reported history of injuries in the dominant shoulder or elbow. METHODS…
