Acute posterior interosseous nerve palsy caused by a synovial haemangioma of the elbow joint.

A case is described of spontaneous posterior interosseous nerve palsy of acute onset. The initial symptoms made it difficult to distinguish the condition from tendon rupture. The diagnosis was established using ultrasound, nerve conduction studies and MRI. The patient underwent surgery to decompress the posterior interosseous nerve and the histological examination identified the tumour as a synovial haemangioma. 12 months after the operation, the patient had made a complete recovery, confirmed by EMG.

Paratonia is inversely correlated to premotor areas perfusion.

OBJECTIVE: Paratonia is defined as an inability to relax the muscles during tone assessment, resulting in participants either opposing or facilitating the examiner's movement involuntarily. This phenomenon is frequently found in patients with cognitive impairment and has been attributed to frontal lobe dysfunction, although a direct correlation has not been established. This study aimed to explore the correlation between frontal lobe function, as assessed by functional brain imaging, and paratonia, as assessed by electromyography. METHODS: Memory clinic outpatients with suspected Alzheimer's

Osteochondritis Dissecans of the Capitellum: Arthroscopic Microfracture.

BACKGROUND: Osteochondritis dissecans of the capitellum is a focal injury to the articular cartilage and subchondral bone observed in young athletes. This can cause activity-limiting pain, intra-articular loose bodies, and limited range of motion. INDICATIONS: Stable lesions identified early with minimal symptoms can be managed nonoperatively. Indications for surgical management include unstable lesions, loose bodies, mechanical symptoms, and stable lesions that failed 6 months of nonoperative treatment. A range of surgical options have been advocated-including arthroscopic versus open loose

Conservative versus surgical treatment of Gartland type II supracondylar humeral fractures in children.

The purpose of the study was to compare the efficacy of conservative and surgical treatments for Gartland type II supracondylar humerus fractures in children. We assessed 142 patients with type II supracondylar humerus fractures treated in our hospital from February 2018 to February 2019. The patients were divided into two groups: initial conservative treatment (Group A) and initial surgical treatment (Group B). Clinical outcomes were measured by the Flynn scoring system. Variables were analyzed using a statistical approach between those groups. All patients were followed up for 6-12 months. T

Comparison of radiological, clinical, and functional results of Jakob type 2 lateral condyle fractures treated with closed reduction and percutaneous pinning versus open reduction and K-wire fixation.

Pediatric humerus lateral condyle fractures (PHLCF) are one of the most common fractures among children. PHLCF is approximately 20% of all pediatric elbow fractures. Among the treatment modalities are: nonoperative treatment with splinting, closed reduction with percutaneous K-wire fixation (CRPP), and open reduction with K-wire fixation (ORIF). We aimed to evaluate radiological, functional, and clinical outcomes of Jakob type 2 PHLCF treated either with CRPP or ORIF. We hypothesized that CRPP may be as safe and effective as ORIF for Jakob type 2 PHLCF. In this retrospective study, we included

Computational analysis of glenohumeral joint growth and morphology following a brachial plexus birth injury.

Children affected with brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI) undergo muscle paralysis. About 33% of affected children experience permanent osseous deformities of the glenohumeral joint. Recent evidence suggests that some cases experience restricted muscle longitudinal growth in addition to paralysis and reduced range of motion at the shoulder and elbow. It is unknown whether altered loading due to paralysis, muscle growth restriction and contracture, or static loading due to disuse is the primary driver of joint deformity after BPBI. This study uses a computational framework integrating finite e

Peripartum and neonatal factors associated with the persistence of neonatal brachial plexus palsy at 1 year: a review of 382 cases.

OBJECTIVE Neonatal brachial plexus palsy (NBPP) occurs due to the stretching of the nerves of the brachial plexus before, during, or after delivery. NBPP can resolve spontaneously or become persistent. To determine if nerve surgery is indicated, predicting recovery is necessary but difficult. Historical attempts explored the association of recovery with only clinical and electrodiagnostic examinations. However, no data exist regarding the neonatal and peripartum factors associated with NBPP persistence. METHODS This retrospective cohort study involved all NBPP patients at the University of Mic

Endoscopy-assisted subfascial anterior transposition of the ulnar nerve for the treatment of cubital tunnel syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Many techniques have been described to relieve the compression and reduce subluxation of the ulnar nerve following surgery. The subfascial anterior transposition of the ulnar nerve (SfATUN) is one described technique, but involves a long scar, risk of injury to the medial antebrachial cutaneous nerve, and possible nerve ischemia from anterior transposition. We assessed a more refined approach of endoscopy-assisted SfATUN for the treatment of cubital tunnel syndrome. METHODS: A consecutive case series of 21 patients (15 males and 6 females) with evidence of nerve subluxation after

The orthopedic diseases of ancient Egypt.

BACKGROUND: CT scanning of ancient human remains has the potential to provide insights into health and diseases. While Egyptian mummies have undergone CT scans in prior studies, a systematic survey of the orthopedic conditions afflicting a group of these ancient individuals has never been carried out. METHODS: We performed whole body CT scanning on 52 ancient Egyptian mummies using technique comparable to that of medical imaging. All of the large joints and the spine were systematically examined and osteoarthritic (OA) changes were scored 0-4 using Kellgren and Lawrence classification. RESUL

Functional motor recovery from motoneuron axotomy is compromised in mice with defective corticospinal projections.

Brachial plexus injury (BPI) and experimental spinal root avulsion result in loss of motor function in the affected segments. After root avulsion, significant motoneuron function is restored by re-implantation of the avulsed root. How much this functional recovery depends on corticospinal inputs is not known. Here, we studied that question using Celsr3|Emx1 mice, in which the corticospinal tract (CST) is genetically absent. In adult mice, we tore off right C5-C7 motor and sensory roots and re-implanted the right C6 roots. Behavioral studies showed impaired recovery of elbow flexion in Celsr3|E
