BABS (Becoming Active in Beating osteoarthritiS): a cluster randomized controlled trial evaluating an information campaign to improve osteoarthritis care and management in Dutch general practices.

BACKGROUND: The aim of our study was to examine the effectiveness of an information campaign using behavioral change techniques (BCTs) targeting both individuals with early stage knee and hip osteoarthritis (KHOA) and healthcare providers (HCPs) to improve beliefs about non-surgical treatments, and ultimately, to optimize utilization of non-surgical treatment options in primary care. METHODS: We used a cluster randomised design with general practices serving as cluster units. Eligible patients were Dutch-speaking, aged 50-75, registered with KHOA, without joint replacement or considerable wal

Applicability of a canine prostate simulator (PROSIM-DOG) in clinical veterinary practices.

Simulators help students to perform procedures as many times as needed, in a controlled and non-stressful environment. It is crucial to include transrectal digital palpation in the physical examination of dogs for effective clinical diagnosis of prostate diseases, since this is a commonly found pathology in intact males. Training in prostate palpation may be hindered if students cannot assess and compare different types of prostates, a common situation that can be solved by training devices. A low-cost canine prostate simulator (PROSIM-DOG) was developed and tested by 167 veterinary science st

Practical efficacy of olmesartan versus azilsartan in patients with hypertension: a multicenter randomized-controlled trial (MUSCAT-4 study).

BACKGROUND: Olmesartan and azilsartan, angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs), are expected to decrease blood pressure more than the other ARBs. We conducted randomized-controlled trials to compare the practical efficacy of olmesartan with azilsartan. METHODS: Eighty-four patients treated with the conventional ARBs for more than 3 months were assigned randomly to receive either 20 mg of olmesartan (olmesartan medoxomil, OL group) or 20 mg of azilsartan (azilsartan, not azilsartan medoxomil, AZ group) once daily for 16 weeks. The practical efficacy on blood pressure was compared between the O

The effect of phone and video counselling given to participants living with obesity on weight loss and quality of life during the COVID-19 pandemic: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Although remote dietary counselling practices have increased in the COVID-19 pandemic, it is not known which method is more effective. This study aimed to determine the effect of diet counselling by phone or video on weight loss and to compare it with the traditional follow-up method. METHODS: Forty-six participants living with obesity were randomised into the phone counselling (n = 15), video counselling (n = 15), and traditional follow-up groups (n = 16), and were followed for 10 weeks. The anthropometric measurements, quality-of-life questionnaire (SF-36) scores and total calor

Single- versus multiple-dose methotrexate in cesarean scar pregnancies management: treatment and reproductive outcomes.

PURPOSE: We aim to assess the outcome of the treatment of cesarean scar pregnancy (CSP) with single-dose methotrexate (MTX) versus multiple-dose MTX protocols. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study including two tertiary medical centers was conducted. All women diagnosed with CSPs between the years 2011 and 2019 that were initially managed with systemic MTX were included. Single-dose MTX practiced in one medical center was compared to multiple-dose MTX, practiced in the other medical center. RESULTS: The study cohort included 31 women in the single dose and 32 women in the multiple-dose MTX

Does exercise-induced muscle damage impair subsequent motor skill learning?

Motor skill learning is a fundamental aspect of human behavior based on the calibration of internal models via sensory information such as proprioception. Some conditions, as exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD), disrupt proprioceptive information, and may cause learning impairment. Such possible relation between EIMD and motor skill learning has not yet been investigated and it is the aim of this study. For this purpose, thirty male university students (19.3 ± 1.8 years) were equally assigned to two groups: EIMD and CON group. The EIMD group received a treatment to induce muscle damage consi

Comparing paper Letters in addition to Emailed Audit and feedback in Refining Asthma treatment to Improve clinical and environmental Results in primary care through a cluster randomised controlled trial: the CLEAR AIR study.

BACKGROUND: Suboptimal use of preventer inhalers and salbutamol reliever overprescribing are associated with preventable asthma deaths and are a major source of primary care carbon emissions. Audit and feedback produces modest behaviour change by assessing clinical performance and delivering feedback to encourage improvement. Although feedback is increasingly delivered digitally, clinicians may respond more to additional printed feedback reports. We evaluated whether combined digital and paper feedback was more effective than digital-only feedback in promoting safer and greener asthma prescrib

Healthy Steps: a case study of innovation in pediatric practice.

Healthy Steps (HS) represents a significant innovation in the way pediatric primary care can be delivered. Based on the standards and principles of Bright Futures and the American Academy of Pediatrics Health Supervision Guidelines, HS enhances and expands traditional pediatric care by including a child development specialist (Healthy Steps specialist) as part of the pediatric practice team. Services offered by this person, typically a nurse, early childhood educator, or social worker, include more time to spend discussing preventive issues during well-child visits, home visits, a telephone in

Organizational evaluation and restructuring in a college of nursing: Strategies for gaining buy-in and shared goal setting.

The authors present reflections from a new dean on organizational evaluation and restructuring within a College of Nursing. Leadership transitions are crucial in academic institutions, as they have a profound impact on faculty, staff, students, and other key groups. Understanding an organization's culture and history before implementing structural changes is essential for effective leadership. Drawing from the connection between emotional intelligence and effective leadership, the case highlights how a new dean engaged in early assessments by seeking input from key groups, fostering trust, and

Topical treatment for moccasin-type tinea pedis.

Sixty patients were treated for tinea pedis with 2% topical ketoconazole cream either once or twice daily. All diagnoses were confirmed mycologically. They were randomly assigned in a double-blind study into three groups on the basis of their clinical lesions, that is, vesicular pedis, interdigital pedis, and hyperkeratotic "moccasin" pedis. Patients were treated for a period of 1 month and were evaluated weekly. A 4-week posttreatment evaluation permitted an assessment of recurrence or improvement. The follow-up visits showed 93% of the vesicular patients, 86% of the interdigital patients, an

Key skills and challenges in one-on-one peer support for older adolescents and young adults with serious mental health conditions.

BACKGROUND: Peer support for older adolescents and young adults has become increasingly available as a formal mental health service. Alongside this increasing availability has been a steady accumulation of studies examining the potential for peer support to lead to positive outcomes for peer support users. However, a consistent refrain from the literature on peer support is that research and practice are hampered by a lack of theory-based models that specify the activities and skills of specific peer support roles, and describe how skillful practice is linked to outcomes. As part of a larger s

Suturing and knot-tying techniques in microsurgery: anastomosis time, learning curve and scanning electron microscopic assessment.

BACKGROUND: Various suturing and knotting techniques exist to enhance microsurgical efficiency, yet a comprehensive comparison is lacking. This study evaluates two suturing (interrupted vs. open-loop) and two knot-tying (conventional vs. airborne) techniques to determine how anastomosis time is apportioned between them. METHODS: Seventy-two femoral artery anastomoses were performed on 36 female Wistar-albino rats by nine microsurgeons, stratified into three groups (<1, 1-4, >4 years experience). The four combinations were interrupted or open-loop suture with conventional or airborne knot (IS-

Managing dry eye disease in primary Sjögren's syndrome using the chronic care model: a single-group pre-post study.

BACKGROUND: Dry eye is the most prevalent ocular complaint among patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome, manifesting as pronounced eye discomfort and frequently complicated by mental disorders including anxiety and depression. Prior research has demonstrated that the chronic care model improves both clinical indicators and psychological status. This study compared changes in clinical parameters and psychological status in patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome following a 24-week chronic disease management intervention. METHODS: This single-group pre-post study was conducted at a tertiary

Quality Improvement in the Practice of Blood Transfusions in Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation Procedures.

Background Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is a standard procedure for symptomatic severe aortic stenosis and is especially favored in patients with a high surgical risk. Although TAVI is minimally invasive, blood transfusion remains a relevant postoperative concern. Glenfield Hospital routinely cross-matched four units of packed red cells (PRCs) for every TAVI patient. This practice put significant strain on transfusion services and hospital resources with the increased volume of TAVIs performed, from 182 cases in 2021 to 543 in 2024. Changes in data regarding blood transfusion

Randomized controlled trial demonstrates novel tools to assess patient outcomes of Indigenous cultural safety training.

BACKGROUND: Health care routinely fails Indigenous peoples and anti-Indigenous racism is common in clinical encounters. Clinical training programs aimed to enhance Indigenous cultural safety (ICS) rely on learner reported impact assessment even though clinician self-assessment is poorly correlated with observational or patient outcome reporting. We aimed to compare the clinical impacts of intensive and brief ICS training to control, and to assess the feasibility of ICS training evaluation tools, including unannounced Indigenous standardized patient (UISP) visits. METHOD: Using a prospective p

Knowledge, attitudes, practices, and perception of COVID-19 preventive measures among adult residents of Matadi (Democratic Republic of the Congo) after the third epidemic wave.

BACKGROUND: Several governments from African countries, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), implemented stringent public health measures to curb COVID-19 transmission in the early phases of the pandemic. While these restrictive measures are believed to have contributed to lowering case incidence and related mortality in DRC, data on the population's knowledge and adherence are limited. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, perception, attitudes, and practices of COVID-19 preventive measures and associated factors among adult residents of Matadi, thereby generating evidenc

Clinical management guidelines for Friedreich ataxia: best practice in rare diseases.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Friedreich ataxia (FRDA) can find it difficult to access specialized clinical care. To facilitate best practice in delivering healthcare for FRDA, clinical management guidelines (CMGs) were developed in 2014. However, the lack of high-certainty evidence and the inadequacy of accepted metrics to measure health status continues to present challenges in FRDA and other rare diseases. To overcome these challenges, the Grading of Recommendations Assessment and Evaluation (GRADE) framework for rare diseases developed by the RARE-Bestpractices Working Group was adopted to
