Tuberculosis in congregate settings: Policies and practices in various facilities in Mumbai, India.

Congregate settings and correctional facilities have high risk of transmission of tuberculosis. They should have capacity to identify and diagnose cases early and initiate prompt treatment to prevent spread to inmates and staff. Appropriate interventions should ensure completion of treatment, documentation and reporting, and prevention of reactivation of successfully treated cases. This requires support from local health authorities. Although international policies and guidelines for infection control in congregate settings are available, there is very little information on how these are pract…

Dealing with Scabies in a Hospital Ward.

A case of scabies has been diagnosed in the Medical Ward where Sophie works, and the hospital is having to take appropriate measures. Scabies mites can spread quickly, and staff who are in contact with the infected patient risk catching the parasites and contaminating their own family in turn. One of the night nurses is probably infected.

Advantage of using colonic washouts for Blastocystis detection in colorectal cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: There have been previous studies associating microorganisms to cancer and with our recent findings of Blastocytsis antigen having a higher in vitro proliferation of cancer cells strengthens the suspicion. Collecting faecal samples alone to associate this parasite with cancer may not be accurate due to the phenomenon of irregular shedding and the possible treatment administrated to the cancer patients. Hence, this become the basis to search for an alternate method of sample collection. Colonic washout is an almost complete washed up material from colon and rectum which includes vari

Bloodstream infections in haematology: risks and new challenges for prevention.

Bloodstream infections are an important cause of morbidity and mortality in the haematology population, and may contribute to delayed admini … creasingly intensive chemotherapeutic regimens, frequent use of central venous catheters, and local infection control practices. In addition, the risks and benefits of prophylaxis, and spectrum of endemic flora are identified as relevant factors within individual centres. Prions: who should worry about them?

Prion diseases, also called transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs), are a family of neurodegenerative disorders affecting both humans and animals. They are caused by the accumulation of an abnormal form of a protein known as prion that results in neuronal death and a characteristic spongiform appearance of the brain tissue. Human prion diseases can be sporadic, acquired or hereditary. Acquired prion diseases have been linked to entering contaminated food into the human food chain, failure to completely disinfect or sterilize contaminated surgical instruments, patients receiving tissu

Testing for group a streptococci.

CONTEXT: Laboratory diagnosis of group A streptococcal pharyngitis in physician office and small-hospital laboratories. OBJECTIVE: To characterize laboratory practices for the diagnosis of group A streptococcal pharyngitis and to identify opportunities for improvement. DESIGN: Voluntary self-assessment questionnaire, used to assess the laboratory practices of 790 laboratories subscribing to the College of American Pathologists Excel Microbiology Proficiency Testing Program. RESULTS: We observed discrepancies between self-reported and recommended specimen collection and laboratory testing pr

Urinary catheters: selection, maintenance and nursing care.

Catheterization is often undertaken without sufficient assessment, and the high rates of bacteriuria (10-20%) occurring in catheterized patients seem to be accepted (Ward et al, 1997). This article reviews catheter selection, maintenance and nursing care, highlighting problem areas and suggesting measures that may be taken to reduce the risk factors. A problem-solving approach, based on research evidence relating to catheter care, is presented. Often there is a simple solution to a problem, but treatments based on traditions or myths appear to be the first choice in many situations. This artic

Basing catheter care on research principles.

This review outlines the research-based principles which should be considered when caring for any patient with an indwelling urinary catheter. As principles they are not prescriptive, but should encourage reflection and allow nurses to make informed decisions regarding their care delivery based on current research.

Gelled diet for screwworm (Diptera: Calliphoridae) mass production.

A rearing system based on a diet gelled with Water-Lock G-400, a synthetic superabsorbent (poly(2-propenamide-co-2-propenoic acid, sodium salt)) (WL), was compared with the standard rearing system (liquid diet suspended in acetate fibers) for the mass production of screwworms, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel). The WL rearing system yielded 2% heavier pupae, 32% higher egg to pupa survival, and required 54% less diet and 88% less labor than the standard rearing system. Other advantages of the WL system include reduced susceptibility to suboptimal environmental conditions and labor practices a

[Comparative study of 3 methods of evaluation of antiseptic products and disinfectants in quality control].

For choosing a protocol of determination of bactericidal activity of antiseptic and disinfectant products, we have compared a method using an MS2 Abbott system and the classic methods: membrane filtration and dilution-method by transfer loops. The bactericidal-activity of 12 antiseptic solutions are determined. The results shown that there was no significative difference between the automated system and AFNOR specifications. The dilution-method by transfer loops gave higher bactericidal concentrations than the two other methods.

Occult hepatitis B virus infection among people with a family history of chronic hepatitis B virus infection.

UNLABELLED: The prevalence of occult hepatitis B virus infection (OBI) among people with a family history of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is unclear. Serum samples were collected from 747 hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-negative people with a family history of HBV infection and 579 HBsAg-negative volunteer blood donors. The presence of HBV DNA was evaluated using nested PCR with primers specific for the X, S, and C regions of HBV. The Pre-S1/Pre-S2/ S region PCR products for the OBI group and their family members with chronic HBV infection (control group) were sequenced and co

Clinical analysis of stages of HBV infection in 100 cases of lymphoma.

OBJECTIVE: HBV infection may cause damage to the immune system and induce lymphomas as a result. Some scholars have indicated that HBsAg(+) reflecting HBV infection may have a relationship with lymphoma development. This study was designed to find out the specific stage of HBV infection which may be related to lymphoma. METHODS: HBV serum markers, including HBsAg, HBsAb, HBeAg, HBeAb, HBcAb were tested among 100 lymphoma patients and 100 other patients who were diagnosed with non-lymphoma diseases in the First Hospital of Jilin University from 2010.1.1 to 2012.12.31. Three subgroups were esta

Pharmacoeconomic analysis of ethanol and benzalkonium chloride to prevent infections in dental facilities.

BACKGROUND: This paper describes pharmacoeconomic analysis of ethanol and benzalkonium chloride disinfectants used in dental institutions to prevent infections. Pathogens can be transmitted to patients via air, items, contact or vectors. The aim of this study is to compare the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of both disinfectants. METHODS: For pharmacoeconomic assessment, cost minimization analysis, cost benefit analysis (CBA), cost effectiveness analysis and cost utility analysis were performed. The cost of disinfectants used in hand disinfection of dental professionals is estimated to be
