This study investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying the induction of and protection from T cell activation-associated hepatic injury. When BALB/c mice were given a single intravenous injection of concanavalin A (Con A) (> or = 0.3 mg/mouse), they developed acute hepatic injury as assessed by a striking increase in plasma transaminase levels within 24 h. We investigated the effects of interleukin-4 (IL-4) on the survival of leukemic and normal B-cell progenitors cultured on bone marrow stroma. Immunotherapy using subcutaneous injections of recombinant interleukin-2 (IL-2) and recombinant interferon alpha-2a (IFN-alpha) for advanced hematologic and solid tumors is rapidly developing. We report five patients with Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma who developed a local cutaneous reaction consisting of inflammatory painful nodules with a central multiloculated vesicle at the site of sc injections of IL-2 and IFN-alpha immunotherapy following ABMT. This is the first report of a local cutaneous adverse reaction induced by IL-2 and IFN-alpha immunotherapy following ABMT.

Interleukin-1 is a cytokine with bone-resorbing activity which is claimed to play a role in the pathogenesis of osteoporosis and of post-oophorectomy bone loss. Kinetics of serum levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) were studied in patients with acute Plasmodium falciparum malaria in relation to vitamin A and its binding proteins, retinol binding protein (RBP) and pre-albumin. It was found that IL-6 levels followed the rise and decrease of parasitaemia by 12 hr and correlated inversely with levels of vitamin A and its binding proteins. These data suggest that vitamin A supplementation alone might still be insufficient to restore a malaria-induced vitamin A deficiency.

The authors describe a patient in whom the serum levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and other laboratory parameters were monitored. The IL-6 and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, which were extremely high before treatment, declined rapidly with administration of prednisolone. Rheumatoid factor, IgG, and platelets count declined more gradually. Thus, determination of the serum IL-6 level might be useful in diagnosing and monitoring polyarteritis nodosa.

We report two patients who developed benign plasmacytosis with multiple skin lesions. The cases were characterized by hyperplasia of mature plasma cells, and polyclonal hypergammaglobulinaemia. One patient had hyperplasia of mature plasma cells not only in the skin, but also extensively in lymph nodes and the retroperitoneal areas around the ureters. The prognosis of patients with advanced refractory lymphoma remains poor. We have carried out a Phase II study of continuous high dose intravenous recombinant interleukin 2 alone without LAK cells in this group of patients. Eight patients have so far been treated, 4 with non-Hodgkins lymphoma and 4 with Hodgkins disease. Of the 7 evaluable patients, the maximum response observed was stable disease in 2 patients (1 with NHL and 1 with HD).
