CONTEXT: Autosomal dominant hypophosphatemic rickets (ADHR) is the only hereditary disorder of renal phosphate wasting in which patients may regain the ability to conserve phosphate. Low iron status plays a role in the pathophysiology of ADHR.
OBJECTIVE: This study reports of a girl with ADHR, iron deficiency, and a paternal history of hypophosphatemic rickets that resolved without treatment. The girl's biochemical phenotype resolved with iron supplementation.
SUBJECTS: A 26-month-old girl presented with typical features of hypophosphatemic rickets, short stature (79 cm; -2.82 SDS), and iron

In most chronic disease conditions, the systemic inflammatory response and its mediators play an essential pathogenic role. Protein calorie malnutrition, a prominent feature of end-stage renal disease (ESRD), also develops, largely as a consequence of the systemic inflammatory response. ESRD (uremia), dialysis, systemic metabolic acidosis, and infections activate the systemic inflammatory response. Elevations in C-reactive protein and depressions of serum albumin below 4 g/dL are found in more than 50% of ESRD patients undergoing dialysis. In many patients receiving dialysis, the impact of thi

We present the unusual case of a 7-year-old girl with severe iron-deficiency anemia who concurrently was determined to be in a supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) rhythm. To our knowledge, the association of anemia with SVT has not been reported previously. We review the presentation of SVT, management strategies for treating both severe anemia and SVT, risks and benefits of using the classic treatments for SVT in a severely anemic patient and discuss iron-deficiency anemia-related cardiac disease.

Cellular activities such as DNA synthesis, adenosine triphosphate production, and mitochondrial respiration are affected by iron metabolism. Disturbance of iron homeostasis usually leads to damage in cells and organs in the context of iron overload or deficiency. Thus, iron, a key regulator in nutritional immunity, was shown to be critical in innate and adaptive immunity. Unlike apoptosis, ferroptosis, a feature of iron-dependent lipid peroxidation, is thought to be associated with immune regulation because of its immunogenic nature. In this review, we summarize the role of iron and ferroptosi

Osteoporosis is a remarkably frequent complication of iron loading conditions such as thalassemia, sicklemia, African siderosis, hemochromatosis, smoking, alcoholism, HIV infection, and cessation of menstruation. The metal suppresses osteoblast formation of bone and may also stimulate osteoclast resorption of bone. Iron also inhibits anterior pituitary synthesis of gonadotrophs. This, in turn, results in depressed formation of gonadal hormones. The tendency of iron-loaded persons to become osteoporotic may be enhanced by gonadal hormone deficiency. Iron binding agents that could specifically w

Low ferritin content in putamen and frontal cortex found in a postmortem study in a single case of Rett syndrome prompted measurement of iron-related parameters in blood. Serum ferritin, serum iron and transferrin were evaluated in 27 patients with classical Rett syndrome. Signs of iron deficiency and depletion of body iron stores were found in 20% of probands aged up to 6 years and in 37% older than 14 years. This result is in accordance with figures from the normal female population and therefore a linkage between iron depletion in brain and depleted iron stores could not be proven.

Small-bowel vascular malformations represent an uncommon but important source of obscure bleeding that can lead to iron deficiency anemia. Diagnosis and management can be challenging due to the intermittent nature and inaccessibility of small-bowel lesions. We present a 36-year-old man with recurrent iron deficiency anemia (IDA) requiring monthly iron infusions, in whom investigations using multiple modalities revealed the unusual finding of multiple small-bowel vascular malformations. Extensive investigations have failed to definitively localize a culprit bleeding point. This case highlights

Patterson Brown Kelly or Plummer-Vinson syndrome is characterized by dysphagia, iron deficiency anemia and post-cricoidal esophageal web. Waldenstorm introduced the term 'sideropenic dysphagia' because of absence of stainable iron in the bone marrow. There is increased incidence of upper aero-digestive tract carcinoma in patients with Plummer-Vinson syndrome has been well established. The reported rates range from 4% to 16%, with almost all cases occurring at the postcricoid location. We have reported here a case of a 48-year-old woman with dysphagia , upper esophageal web and iron deficiency a

Both iron and copper play critical biochemical roles in the post-translational modifications of collagen and elastin. These modifications are essential to the maturation and structural integrity of these proteins. Iron functions in the hydroxylation of specific prolyl and lysyl residues in collagen, a process that must occur before the triple helix can form and be extruded from the cell. Copper functions in the oxidative deamination of specific lysyl residues in the soluble forms of both elastin and collagen. This process is essential for crosslink formation and the structural integrity of the

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency anemia affects hundreds of millions of women and children worldwide and is associated with impaired infant outcomes. Small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplement (LNS) have been found to reduce the prevalence of anemia and iron deficiency in some trials.
OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the effectiveness of daily LNS supplementation on child anemia and micronutrient status in Madagascar within the context of an existing, scaled-up nutrition program.
METHODS: We cluster-randomized 125 communities to (T0) a routine program with monthly growth monitoring and nutrition educ

BACKGROUND: Microcytosis is a common red cell change seen in anaemias of varied aetiology. These include iron deficiency, thalassaemia, chronic disease and sideroblastic anaemias. The microcytosis of heterozygous beta-thalassaemia needs to be distinguished from non-thalassaemic microcytosis for its role in thalassaemia control. Red cell indices derived from automated red cell analysers have been used to discriminate between microcytic patients with a high probability of thalassaemia minor from those with a low probability. There is a controversy on the choice of red cell indices to be used and

Anaemia caused by iron deficiency has long been reported in dairy calves. This study investigated iron deficiency anaemia on UK dairy farms feeding whole milk and evaluated the effect of iron supplementation on the daily weight gain (DG) and haemoglobin (Hb) levels of these calves. Two-hundred-and-thirty-seven calves were enrolled across six farms. At enrolment, calves were randomly allocated to either receive treatment with iron injection (INJ; n = 120) consisting of 5 mL (1 g iron) of iron dextran (Uniferon 20% Injection, Pharmacosmos) or no injection, control (CON; n = 117). Calves were blo

Iron status, including hemoglobin, S-ferritin, S-iron, S-transferrin, transferrin saturation and the erythrocyte zinc protoporphyrin/hemoglobin (ZPP:Hb) ratio, was evaluated in 85 healthy iron-supplemented mothers at parturition and in 74 of their term newborn infants. Of the mothers, 17% had a S-ferritin level less than 15 micrograms/l (i.e. depleted iron stores), 9.9% had S-ferritin less than 15 micrograms/l and transferrin saturation less than 15% (i.e. latent iron deficiency), and 2.4% had S-ferritin less than 15 micrograms/l, transferrin saturation less than 15% and Hb less than 120 g/l (

Iron metabolism plays a crucial role in various physiological functions of the human body, as it is essential for the growth and development of almost all organisms. Dysregulated iron metabolism-manifested either as iron deficiency or overload-is a significant risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Moreover, emerging evidence suggests that ferroptosis, a form of iron-dependent programed cell death, may also contribute to CVD development. Understanding the regulatory mechanisms of iron metabolism and ferroptosis in CVD is important for improving disease management. By

Reduced levels of iron, folate, vitamin B12, vitamin D, zinc, and magnesium are common in untreated celiac disease (CD) patients probably due to loss of brush border proteins and enzymes needed for the absorption of these nutrients. In the majority of patients, removal of gluten from the diet leads to histological recovery and normalization of iron, vitamin, and mineral levels. Iron deficiency anemia is the most common extra-intestinal sign of CD and usually resolves with adherence to a gluten-free diet. However, deficiencies of both folate and vitamin B12 may persist in some patients on a glu

Prior to 1960 a Polya gastrectomy was the most frequent operation for duodenal ulcer. The majority of these patients now have reached the age of sixty or older. A prospective longitudinal study of a cohort of patients who underwent gastrectomy between 1955 and 1960 was undertaken. Twenty five to thirty years later the study has revealed the extent of the nutritional problems that may arise with the passage of time and shows that these numerically far outweigh the mechanical post-gastrectomy syndromes and weight loss which tended to dominate the earlier post-gastrectomy scene. By the end of the

Plummer-Vinson syndrome (PVS) is a rare entity characterized by upper esophageal webs and iron deficiency anemia. We report a case of PVS whose esophageal web was rapidly improved by iron therapy. A 77-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with complaints of dysphagia, vomiting, shortness of breath and weight loss for 1 month. Physical examination revealed conjunctival pallor, koilonychia, angular cheilitis and smooth tongue, and laboratory findings were consistent with microcytic hypochromic anemia with iron deficiency. Various haematological parameters were followed in a group of 47 Kenyan patients with visceral leishmaniasis during treatment and follow up. The WBC and platelet numbers were normal by the time of cure, the Hb level took longer to become normal. Red cells were microcytic and hypochromic. MCV and MCH increased during follow up but microcytosis persisted up to a year after cure. Low serum iron and transferrin concentration, low total iron binding capacity and normal to high serum ferritin levels were found in 10 patients and are consistent with 'anaemia of chronic inflammation'. Bone marrows of

Iron (Fe) deficiency in plants is a major problem in agriculture. Therefore, we investigated both the physiological features and molecular mechanisms of plants' response to low-Fe (LF) stress along with the mitigation of LF with exogenous spermidine (Spd) in tomato plants. The results showed that exogenous Spd foliar application relieved the suppressing effect of LF stress on tomato plants by regulating the photosynthetic efficiency, chlorophyll metabolism, antioxidant levels, organic acid secretion, polyamine metabolism and osmoregulatory systems.
