Relationship of Knee Abduction Moment to Trunk and Lower Extremity Segment Acceleration during Sport-Specific Movements.

The knee abduction moment (KAM) has been identified as a significant predictor of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury risk; however, the cost and time demands associated with collecting three-dimensional (3D) kinetic data have prompted the need for alternative solutions. Wearable inertial measurement units (IMUs) have been explored as a potential solution for quantitative on-field assessment of injury risk. Most previous work has focused on angular velocity data, which are highly susceptible to bias and noise relative to acceleration data. The purpose of this pilot study was to assess the

In-Vivo MRI in Rodents: A Protocol for Optimal Animal Positioning.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a potentially powerful novel peripheral nerve diagnosis technique. To determine its validity, in-vivo preclinical studies are necessary. However, when using a rodent model, positioning rats and achieving high-resolution images can be challenging. We present a short report that outlines an optimal protocol for positioning rats for in-vivo MRI acquisition. Female Sprague-Dawley rats with sciatic nerve injury were induced into anesthesia using 4% isoflurane in oxygen and maintained at 1.5%. Rats were placed into a plexiglass cradle in a right lateral recumbent

Anatomy of the Sural Nerve in the Posterolateral Approach to the Ankle: A Cadaveric Study.

Sural nerve injury may occur during the posterolateral approach to the ankle during fracture fixation. We aimed to map its location in a posterolateral approach in cadaveric specimens. A posterolateral approach was used in 28 cadaver legs with the incision made halfway between the medial border of the fibula and the lateral border of Achilles tendon, extending proximally from the tip of the lateral malleolus. The sural nerve was identified and the distance from the distal tip of the incision to where it crossed the incision proximally was measured. The mean distance was 3.4 ± 1.2 (range 0.5-7.

Senior fitness test; a useful tool to measure physical fitness in persons with acquired brain injury.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the feasibility and usability of the senior fitness test (SFT) in persons with acquired brain injury (ABI). METHODS: A pilot cohort design with a convenience sample of persons with ABI was used. RESULTS: Persons with ABIs (n = 47) were younger than their healthy counterparts (n = 172) were but performed significantly worse on sit to stand, 6-min walk test (6MWT) and 2.45-m up and go. This difference was accentuated in the age groups >60 years of age. Persons with ABIs, divided into subgroups traumatic brain injury (TBI; n = 12) and cerebral insult (CI; n = 35), showed

In vivo assessment of peripheral nerve regeneration by diffusion tensor imaging.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the sensitivity of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in assessing peripheral nerve regeneration in vivo. We assessed the changes in the DTI parameters and histological analyses after nerve injury to examine degeneration and regeneration in the rat sciatic nerves. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), 16 rats were randomly divided into two groups: group P (permanently crushed; n = 7) and group T (temporally crushed; n = 9). Serial MRI of the right leg was performed before the operation, and then performed at the timepoints of 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks after

Lateral ankle sprain alters postural control in bipedal stance: part 2 sensorial and mechanical effects induced by wearing an ankle orthosis.

To investigate the effects induced by wearing an orthosis during the rehabilitation process, 23 ankle sprain patients (degrees I and II) were evaluated in three conditions (reference, with an elastic compression stocking and with an orthosis), 14 h, 10 and 30 days on average after their injury and compared with those of 30 age-matched healthy individuals. The patients were tested with separate measurements of the reaction forces under each limb to highlight the possible compensatory mechanisms between the sound and the injured legs. Their postural stability was enhanced during unilateral ortho

Calpain 3 mRNA expression in mice after denervation and during muscle regeneration.

Lack of functional calpain 3 in humans is a cause of limb girdle muscular dystrophy, but the function(s) of calpain 3 remain(s) unknown. Special muscle conditions in which calpain 3 is downregulated could yield valuable clues to the understanding of its function(s). We monitored calpain 3 mRNA amounts by quantitative RT-PCR and compared them with those of alpha-skeletal actin mRNA in mouse leg muscles for different types of denervation and muscle injury. Intact muscle denervation reduced calpain 3 mRNA expression by a factor of 5 to 10, while alpha-skeletal actin mRNA was reduced in a slower a

Proximal femoral epiphysiolysis in the neonate.

Seven neonates with eight proximal femoral epiphysiolyses were reviewed. Pain elicited by leg motion was the common diagnostic finding in all. Radiography showed lateralization of the shaft similar to congenital hip dysplasia. However, the acetabular index was normal in all but one child. Arthrography confirmed the diagnosis, showing a located proximal femoral epiphysis and a laterally displaced, externally rotated proximal metaphysis. Treatment usually consisted of traction followed by abduction splinting. The long-term results were excellent in six fractures. Growth complications included an

Lumbar Sympathetic Trunk Injury: An Underestimated Complication of Oblique Lateral Interbody Fusion.

OBJECTIVE: Lumbar sympathetic trunk (LST) injury is one of the major complications after oblique lumbar interbody fusion (OLIF). LST injury often manifests as unequal skin temperature in lower limbs after operation, and there may be a large number of missed diagnoses due to the lack of attention and different diagnostic methods. The study aimed to investigate the incidence and clinical characteristics of LST injury after OLIF. METHODS: The data of patients with lumbar degenerative diseases who underwent OLIF in our hospital from April 2016 to October 2017 were retrospectively analyzed. Finall

Arthrogenic muscle inhibition after anterior cruciate ligament injury: Injured and uninjured limb recovery over time.

INTRODUCTION: It is well documented that marked weakness of the quadriceps is present after knee joint injury. This joint trauma induces a presynaptic reflex inhibition of musculature surrounding the joint, termed arthrogenic muscle inhibition (AMI). The extent to which anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury affects thigh musculature motor unit activity, which may affect restoration of thigh muscle strength after injury, is undetermined. METHODS: A randomized protocol of knee flexion and extension isometric contractions (10%-50% maximal voluntary isometric contraction) were performed for eac

Murine burn lesion model for studying acute and chronic wound infections.

Acute wounds, such as thermal injury, and chronic wounds are challenging for patients and the healthcare system around the world. Thermal injury of considerable size induces immunosuppression, which renders the patient susceptible to wound infections, but also in other foci like the airways and urinary tract. Infected thermal lesions can progress to chronic wounds with biofilm making them more difficult to treat. While animal models have their limitations, murine wound models are still the best tool at the moment to identify strategies to overcome these challenges. Here, we present a murine bu

The effect of COVID-19 lockdowns on paediatric lower limb orthopaedic presentations.

INTRODUCTION: As the COVID-19 pandemic was spreading in 2020, the government imposed national lockdowns. We considered the effects these lockdowns had on the paediatric population, with a specific focus on lower limb orthopaedic trauma. We hypothesise that these restrictions will have altered the mechanisms of injury and reduced the number of referrals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analysed data from 28/08/19 to 01/04/21, considering the variations in referrals and operations during these times, and analysed these data using an online statistical calculator. We examined the rate

Vibration Stimulation as a Non-Invasive Approach to Monitor the Severity of Meniscus Tears.

Musculoskeletal disorders and injuries are one of the most prevalent medical conditions across age groups. Due to a high load-bearing function, the knee is particularly susceptible to injuries such as meniscus tears. Imaging techniques are commonly used to assess meniscus injuries, though this approach suffers from limitations including high cost, need for skilled personnel, and confinement to laboratory or clinical settings. Vibration-based structural monitoring methods in the form of acoustic emission analysis and vibration stimulation have the potential to address the limits associated with

Fixation of Acute Chondral Fractures in Adolescent Knees.

OBJECTIVES: Chondral fractures are focal cartilage lesions without osseous attachment, most commonly seen in adolescent knees. They have limited capacity for intrinsic healing and traditional treatment has been removal of loose fragments. However, case reports of successful healing after fixation indicate that repair of the joint surface is possible. We wanted to evaluate the outcome in a cohort of patients who underwent fixation of acute chondral fractures in the knee. DESIGN: Patients treated with fixation of a chondral fracture in the knee at our institution were invited to participate in

Novel Implementation of Extreme Lateral Interbody Fusion to Avoid Intraoperative Lumbar Plexus Injury: Technical Note and Preliminary Results.

BACKGROUND: This study modified the traditional extreme lateral lumbar interbody fusion (XLIF) surgery and was intended to reduce the approach related to lumbar plexus injury. METHODS: The patients receiving a new modified XLIF for treatment of lumbar degenerative diseases since September 2017 in our hospital were retrospectively collected. Postoperative additional symptoms of leg numbness, pain, or weakness were recorded as lumbar plexus nerve injury. Intraoperative electromyographic monitoring was recorded during surgery to evaluate the safety of the modified entry point. The visual analog

Unusual Clinical Course of Odontoid Fracture: Transient Prehospital Cardiopulmonary Arrest.

Odontoid fracture is the most common type of cervical spine fracture in the elderly. Neurological injury due to odontoid fracture is uncommon, but if the injury is severe, it can lead to cardiac arrest. We present a case of odontoid fracture with transient cardiac arrest just after the fall, which fully recovered in a few minutes before arrival at the hospital. A 62-year-old man fell down on a street, and compressions were performed by a witness. On arrival of the emergency medical service, he showed pulseless electrical activity. After two minutes of cardiac resuscitation, he experienced a re
