Cognitive mechanisms predicting resilient functioning in adolescence: Evidence from the CogBIAS longitudinal study.

Resilience is a dynamic process depicted by better than expected levels of functioning in response to significant adversity. This can be assessed statistically, by taking the residuals from a model of psychological functioning regressed onto negative life events. We report the first study to investigate multiple cognitive factors in relation to this depiction of resilient functioning. Life events, internalizing symptoms, and a range of cognitive risk and protective factors were assessed in a large sample of adolescents (N = 504) across three waves spaced 12-18 months apart. Adolescents who dis

Integrated Rehabilitation for Breast Cancer Survivors.

The physical and psychological side effects of breast cancer therapies can have substantial impact on survivors' physical and social functioning. Roughly half of the more than 3 million Americans alive with a history of breast cancer report adverse, function-degrading sequelae related to their oncologic treatments. Care delivery models for the timely delivery of rehabilitation services have been proposed yet limitedly vetted or implemented. These include the prospective surveillance model, procedure-linked referrals, survivorship care plans, and risk stratification. Patients' capacity to engag

Testing an emotion regulation model of physical activity in adolescents with anorexia nervosa: A pilot ecological momentary assessment.

OBJECTIVE: Adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN) often show increased levels of exercise and physical activity. Psychological models suggest that physical activity in AN might attenuate momentary negative affect. However, this has not been directly tested in adolescents with AN, and it remains unclear whether this is a distinct mechanism of physical activity in AN compared with healthy controls (HCs). METHOD: In a 1-day ecological momentary assessment, 32 adolescent inpatients with AN and 30 HCs responded to hourly questions on momentary affect while wearing an actigraph to objectively asses

An empirical assessment of adjustment disorder as proposed for ICD-11 in a general population sample of Israel.

BACKGROUND: A new diagnostic concept of Adjustment Disorder (AjD) was proposed for inclusion in the International Classification of Diseases, 11th version (ICD-11). However, the symptom structure of AjD is poorly understood. The aim of the present study was to investigate the dimensionality of AjD as a stress-response syndrome. METHODS: A general population sample of the Israeli population (N = 1003) completed the Adjustment Disorder - New Module 20 and the WHO-5 Wellbeing Scale. We compared seven alternative models of AjD using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). A latent profile analysis (L

The factor structure of the Dispositional Hope Scale in hemiplegic stroke patients.

BACKGROUND: Hope is an important coping strategy and psychological resource for patients with a chronic illness. Stroke patients are exposed to stressful situations such as limited daily life activities, cognitive impairments and financial burdens. AIM: This study investigated the factor structure of the Dispositional Hope Scale (DHS) and verified its validity when examining stroke patients. METHODS: This methodological study used secondary, cross-sectional data analysis to investigate the factors related to participation restriction in chronic stroke patients. The DHS's reliability was asse

Examining the role of positive and negative metacognitive beliefs in depression.

Many psychological models have been developed to explain the development and maintenance of depression. The most widely evaluated model is the cognitive model of depression, and it is against this model that emerging models should be compared. Accordingly, this cross-sectional study examined whether metacognitive beliefs, as specified in the metacognitive model of depression, would explain additional variance in depressive symptoms over dysfunctional attitudes; the core feature of the cognitive model. Moreover, mediational relationships between metacognitive beliefs, rumination, and depressive

The difficult relationship between occlusal interferences and temporomandibular disorder - insights from animal and human experimental studies.

The aetiology of temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is multifactorial, and numerous studies have addressed that occlusion may be of great importance. However, whether occlusion plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of TMD remains controversial. Study designs utilising animal models have been used to study the effects of artificial occlusal alterations. Experimental traumatic occlusion affects blood flow in the temporomandibular joint and results in changes in the condylar cartilage, and artificial occlusal interference induces masticatory muscle nociceptive responses that are associated with

A Bayesian modeling approach for generalized semiparametric structural equation models.

In behavioral, biomedical, and psychological studies, structural equation models (SEMs) have been widely used for assessing relationships between latent variables. Regression-type structural models based on parametric functions are often used for such purposes. In many applications, however, parametric SEMs are not adequate to capture subtle patterns in the functions over the entire range of the predictor variable. A different but equally important limitation of traditional parametric SEMs is that they are not designed to handle mixed data types-continuous, count, ordered, and unordered catego

The impact of psychoticism on perceived hassles, depression, hostility, and hopelessness in non-psychiatric African Americans.

Psychotic symptoms are distributed along a continuum that extends from normality to diagnosable psychotic disorders and the presence of psychoticism among individuals in the general population may lead to morbidity and social impairment. This study examined a model in which psychoticism leads to several important psychological consequences. The analysis included 134 African Americans with no psychiatric history who were being seen in medical walk-in clinics for non-emergency medical problems. Psychoticism, perceived hassles, depression, hostility, and hopelessness were measured. The Linear Str

A preliminary exploration of quantitative models for evaluating binocular visual perception impairments among patients diagnosed with stroke.

The objective of this study is to formulate and implement graded biological models pertaining to binocular visual perception function with the use of computer algorithms. We aim to quantitatively assess the location, severity, and degree of impairment in binocular visual perception among patients who have suffered stroke, thereby providing valuable insights into the repercussions of cerebral tissue damage on the visual system. To overcome the shortcomings of previous instruments used to assess binocular function in terms of stereoscopic effects and the challenges posed by physiological and psy

Toward explainable AI (XAI) for mental health detection based on language behavior.

Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) in general and Natural Language Processing (NLP) in particular are paving the new way forward for the automated detection and prediction of mental health disorders among the population. Recent research in this area has prioritized predictive accuracy over model interpretability by relying on deep learning methods. However, prioritizing predictive accuracy over model interpretability can result in a lack of transparency in the decision-making process, which is critical in sensitive applications such as healthcare. There is thus a growing need for explain

The five-factor gambling motivation model.

Pathological gambling is a serious social issue, but the underlying psychological motivations are poorly understood. This study developed a five-factor gambling motivation model. The five factors that motivate gambling (socialization, amusement, avoidance, excitement, and monetary motives) were derived from study data obtained from 240 college students. The structure of the five-factor model was confirmed by factor analysis of responses from 234 frequent gamblers. We then compared the "monetary motive version" of this model with the "parallel version" to determine which model more accurately d

Longitudinal relations among Mexican-origin mothers' cultural characteristics, cultural socialization, and 5-year-old children's ethnic-racial identification.

The current longitudinal study examined the intergenerational transmission of ethnic-racial identity/identification and cultural orientation among Mexican-origin adolescent young mothers and their children (N = 161 dyads). Findings indicated that mothers' ethnic-racial identity and their cultural involvement were significantly associated with children's ethnic-racial identification via mothers' cultural socialization; however, associations varied significantly by children's gender and skin tone. For example, mothers' ethnic-racial centrality was positively associated with cultural socializatio

Exploring the link between emotional and behavioral dysregulation: a test of the emotional cascade model.

The emotional cascade model (Selby, Anestis, & Joiner, 2008) posits that the link between emotional and behavioral dysregulation may be through emotional cascades, which are repetitive cycles of rumination and negative affect that result in an intensification of emotional distress. Dysregulated behaviors, such as non-suicidal self-injury, are used to reduce aversive emotions and distract the person from ruminative processes. The aim of the present study was to investigate the emotional cascade model in a non-Western sample of Turkish university students. Accordingly, a structural equation mode

What else do you feel when you feel sad? Emotional overproduction, neuroticism and rumination.

Numerous experimental and naturalistic studies have shown the relevant role of ruminative styles in the onset, duration and severity of depressive episodes. Recent research has increasingly focused on the precursors of these ruminative responses. Neuroticism has been found to be closely related to ruminative styles, but the nature of this relationship is unknown. Across three studies, we explored the role of emotional overproduction, conceptualized as the tendency to simultaneously experience an elevated number of negative emotions and feelings during sad episodes. Study 1 showed that emotiona

Gender aspects of parents' needs of schizophrenia patients.

BACKGROUND: Most studies about the problems and needs of schizophrenia carers included only one care-giving relative, usually the patients' mothers. METHODS: 101 mothers and fathers of the same patients suffering from schizophrenia were included into this study. Their needs were assessed by means of the "Carers' Needs Assessment for Schizophrenia". RESULTS: Mothers reported significantly more often problems than fathers concerning stress due to earlier life events and burn-out. Mothers needed interventions such as individual psychoeducation or family counselling more than twice as often as f

Adjustment in mothers of children with Asperger syndrome: an application of the double ABCX model of family adjustment.

The present study examined the applicability of the double ABCX model of family adjustment in explaining maternal adjustment to caring for a child diagnosed with Asperger syndrome. Forty-seven mothers completed questionnaires at a university clinic while their children were participating in an anxiety intervention. The children were aged between 10 and 12 years. Results of correlations showed that each of the model components was related to one or more domains of maternal adjustment in the direction predicted, with the exception of problem-focused coping. Hierarchical regression analyses demon
