Noninvasive Mechanical Ventilation Reduces Cardiorespiratory Motion and Increases Heart-Stomach Distance for Stereotactic Arrhythmia Radiation Therapy: A Healthy Volunteer Study.

PURPOSE: Stereotactic arrhythmia radiation therapy (STAR) is an emerging noninvasive treatment for patients with therapy-refractory ventricular tachycardia. However, STAR's targeting accuracy is challenged by cardiorespiratory motion, which may necessitate compromises in dose delivery to protect nearby organs-at-risk, particularly the stomach. Noninvasive mechanical ventilation (NIMV) at 60 breaths/min with 15 cmH₂O positive end-expiratory pressure (NIMV60P) has been shown to reduce respiratory motion and to potentially increase anatomic separation between thoracic structures. This study aimed…

Association Between Cervical Range of Motion and Swallowing Speed in Older Women After Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) may induce acute alterations in spinopelvic alignment and compel the cervical spine to compensate for postural balance. Although these changes may biomechanically affect swallowing speed, the relationship between cervical range of motion (ROM) and swallowing speed in older adults after THA remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between cervical ROM and swallowing speed in older women after THA. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 60 older women (mean age 71.6 ± 5.5 years) without clinically sig…

Vestibular habituation is associated with distinct autonomic signatures and greater reduction in visually induced motion sickness: A randomized controlled trial.

This study compared the efficacy of short-duration, high-intensity versus stepwise, progressively lengthened optokinetic drum-chair training in alleviating visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) and modulating autonomic function. Ninety-six VIMS-susceptible university students were randomly assigned to either a short-duration (S-D) group (one training session daily for 3 consecutive days, with each session terminated upon the first report of pronounced nausea) or a stepwise (S-W) group underwent a 6-day graduated protocol (one session daily, duration: 60 s/120 s/180 s). Efficacy was assessed …

A Multimodal Closed-Loop Framework for Vital Sign Monitoring and Intelligent Diagnosis of Amusement Ride Passengers Under High-Dynamic Motion.

High-dynamic amusement ride conditions involving impacts, rapid rotations, and abrupt posture changes introduce severe motion artifacts that degrade vital sign quality and destabilize physiological state recognition. This study aims to develop an engineering-ready closed-loop framework for robust passenger monitoring and intelligent diagnosis. A multimodal sensing and modeling pipeline was designed to jointly leverage physiological signals such as heart rate and SpO2 and kinematic measurements, including acceleration, angular rate, velocity, and attitude. Inertial and PPG signals were preproce…

Impact of wrist motion restriction on self-feeding: Compensatory strategies using an orthotic fixation model - A proof of concept study.

INTRODUCTION: Wrist range of motion (ROM) supports coordinated upper-limb function during self-feeding. Wrist restriction may induce proximal compensation, yet the kinematic consequences of discrete wrist positions remain underexplored. METHODS: Ten healthy young women performed a standardized eating task under four wrist positions: free (FP), palmar-flexed (PFP; 20°), intermediate (IP; 0°), and dorsiflexed (DFP; 20°). Upper-limb kinematics were recorded with a wearable IMU system (100 Hz). Discrete outcomes included maximum/minimum joint angles and event-based angles at the end of scooping a…

Automated detection of racket-ball impact timing in tennis strokes using deep learning models and a markerless motion capture system.

Event identification, which refers to defining important moments within a movement, is a fundamental process in biomechanical analysis. This study aimed to develop and evaluate deep learning models for automated detection of the moment of racket-ball contact during tennis strokes. For this purpose, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) networks were implemented using kinematic data collected from a markerless motion capture system. Kinematic data were obtained from 16 collegiate tennis players performing standard stroke techniques. Among various joint combinations, a set…

An Optimal Control-Based Digital Computational Framework for Predicting the Entire Cycle Sit-to-Stand Motion in Unilateral Transtibial Amputees.

Sit-to-stand movement is the prerequisite for other lower limb movements and determines the independent living ability of lower limb amputees. Although optimal control theory enables human motion prediction without experimental data, existing studies on sit-to-stand prediction for lower limb amputees have neither focused on transtibial amputees nor considered buttocks-seat contact. To address these limitations, this study aims to develop an optimal control-based digital computational framework for predicting the entire cycle sit-to-stand movement of transtibial amputees while analysing the bio…

Correlation of External Rotational Alignment of the Tibial Component with 2-Year Clinical Outcomes after Guided-Motion Total Knee Arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Proper rotational alignment of the femoral and tibial components is critical for successful total knee arthroplasty (TKA). However, few studies have focused on the effect of external rotation of the tibial component on patient-reported outcomes after guided-motion TKA. This study assessed the association between tibial rotational alignment and patient-reported outcomes in patients with neutral alignment in all other planes. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study at a regional institutional hospital analyzed data from patients who underwent primary TKA for knee osteoarthritis and…

Implementation of VMAT-based lattice spatially fractionated radiation therapy (SFRT) across linac platforms: Practical considerations for QA and motion management.

BACKGROUND: Spatially fractionated radiation therapy (SFRT) offers a method to treat bulky, radioresistant tumors while sparing normal tissues. Modern volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) delivery enables conformal lattice SFRT plans, but practical guidance for implementation across different linear accelerators is limited. PURPOSE: This study presents a structured clinical workflow for implementing lattice SFRT across Edge and Halcyon linacs, with emphasis on quality assurance (QA) and motion management. METHODS: A systematic workflow was developed using Eclipse TPS (Acuros v16) with 6 M…

Enhanced data usability in dynamic 68 Ga-PSMA-11 PET of intracranial tumors using a dynamic head motion correction algorithm.

BACKGROUND: Head motion during dynamic positron emission tomography (dPET) compromises pharmacokinetic modeling, especially in prolonged acquisitions where motion artifacts invalidate quantitative analysis. Although motion correction methods are well-established for static PET, their application in dynamic imaging remains limited. This study evaluates the efficacy of a data-driven dynamic head motion correction (dHMC) algorithm in preserving the reliability of kinetic parameter, using dynamic 68 Ga-PSMA-11 PET of intracranial tumors as a challenging model due to the tracer’s inability to cross…

Associations Between Fall Risk and Lower Limb Joint Range of Motion During Sit-to-Stand Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the sit-to-stand transition being an acute period of increased fall risk among older adults, it is currently unclear how lower-limb joint range-of-motion (ROM) during this task relates to fall risk. METHODS: We examined 45 community-dwelling older adults (female = 32 (71.1%), age = 76.5±6.1years, BMI = 26.4±4.0kg/m2) within this cross-sectional study, assessing lower-limb mobility during 10 seconds of sit-to-stand repetitions using a single camera marker-less system. Hip and knee flexion, hip adduction, and ankle dorsiflexion were assessed for the right and left limbs, a…

Concurrent Validation of a Multi-Camera Markerless Motion Capture System Against Inertial Sensors for Upper- and Lower-Limb Joint Kinematics.

Markerless video-based motion capture is a fast-developing, low-burden and versatile alternative to marker-based stereophotogrammetry, yet independent validation evidence for several commercial solutions is still scarce. This study validates the markerless software CapturyStudio (The Captury GmbH, Saarbrücken, Germany) for the reconstruction of upper- and lower-limb joint kinematics, comparing it with a validated Xsens (Movella, Henderson, NV, USA) inertial measurement unit system. Ten healthy subjects (five females and five males) performed two standardized clinical tasks, a Reach-To-Grasp ge…
