Inter-rater reliability of Glamorgan Paediatric Pressure Ulcer Risk Assessment Scale.

UNLABELLED: Children who are at risk of pressure ulcers need to be identified so that preventative measures can be taken. Most paediatric pressure ulcer risk assessment scales were developed using clinical experience, or by modifying adult scales. The Glamorgan Paediatric Pressure Ulcer Risk Assessment Scale was developed using detailed paediatric inpatient data. AIM: To establish whether the inter-rater reliability of the Glamorgan scale was adequate for use in clinical practice. METHOD: Fifteen qualified nurses randomly selected from staff working on seven paediatric wards or units in a la

[Quality of care in intensive care units. Retrospective study on long-term patients].

Nursing care must be evaluated in order to determine its effectiveness and identify deficiencies, which makes it possible to introduce corrective measures to optimize quality. The quality of care given to patients in our unit was evaluated with a retrospective analysis of 915 records in the Nursing Care Plan corresponding to 59 patients with a mean ICU stay of 15.5 days. Six areas of care and indicators of deficient practice were identified: orotracheal intubation: accidental disconnection, displacement, obstruction, and pressure sores on lips; arterial catheterization: accidental disconnectio

Telehealth as a Bridge for Palliative and End-of-Life Care in Nursing Homes.

BACKGROUND: Older adults living in nursing homes experience high rates of serious illness, hospitalization, and death, yet access to specialty palliative care remains limited. The COVID-19 pandemic rapidly expanded telehealth use in nursing homes, creating new opportunities to remotely deliver palliative and end-of-life care. Understanding how telehealth supported or complicated palliative care during this period is critical to informing sustainable post-pandemic clinical and payment models. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative descriptive study using semi-structured interviews with 29 multidi

Knowledge on CLABSI Prevention Strategies and Associated Factors Among ICU Nurses in Dar es Salaam.

BACKGROUND: Central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) is one of the major complications for patients with central lines (CLs) and a leading hospital-acquired infection. This infection is associated with increased length of hospitalization, medical costs, high morbidity, and mortality. As primary caregivers for patients with CLs in the ICU, nurses are crucial in preventing CL-related infections and complications. Despite this key role, there is limited knowledge about ICU nurses' understanding of CLABSI, especially in low-income countries like Tanzania. Aim: This study aimed to ass

Pressure ulcer PUSH score and traditional nursing assessment in nursing home residents: do they correlate?

BACKGROUND: Over a decade ago, the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (NPUAP, 1997) recommended a new tool, the Pressure Ulcer Scale for Healing (PUSH) tool to document ulcers and monitor the healing process. Yet, traditional nursing observation remains standard practice in chronic care, thus prompting this correlational study between PUSH and traditional documentation of pressure ulcers. METHODS: Data were cross-tabulated through a retrospective chart review of all residents with stage II-IV decubiti at a 672-bed skilled nursing facility, between January 1, 2004, and December 31, 2006. Evaluation of a Registered Nurse-Led Outpatient Paracentesis Service for Decompensated Cirrhosis: A Retrospective Review.

BACKGROUND: Ascites is a common and debilitating complication of decompensated cirrhosis that frequently requires therapeutic paracentesis (TP) for symptom relief. Limited outpatient procedural capacity may contribute to avoidable hospital readmissions. The use of registered nurses (RNs) to perform TP remains uncommon, with few models described internationally. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety of an RN-led outpatient TP model and describe the potential geographic reach of patients accessing care at a Canadian tertiary liver clinic. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted of all

Nurses' general attitudes and caregiving-specific perceptions toward the oldest-old: A nationwide survey.

BACKGROUND: Despite the growing population of older adults worldwide, nurses may harbor negative attitudes toward older patients that might risk patient safety. Most studies have investigated general attitudes toward older adults. Only a few have focused on nurses' perceptions of caring for older patients, and there has been little focus on the oldest-old (aged ≥80 years), an age group that is particularly affected by negative attitudes. Emerging models to combat this issue suggest that education about aging and interaction with older adults are key factors. These models have primarily been ev
