Correlates of postnatal depression in mothers and fathers.

BACKGROUND: We compare and contrast some correlates of paternal and maternal depression after the live birth of a first child, as part of a longitudinal study. METHOD: Fifty-four first-time mothers attending obstetric services in Oporto, Portugal, and 42 of their husbands or partners participated in a longitudinal study of their mental health. All subjects were given a semi-structured clinical interview (SADS) at six months antenatally and at 12 months postnatally and sub-samples were interviewed at three months postnatally. At all these times all the mothers and fathers also completed a tran

Effects of cynical hostility, anger out, anxiety, and defensiveness on ambulatory blood pressure in black and white college students.

This study asked whether individual differences in four personality traits (cynical hostility, anger out, anxiety, and defensiveness) would predict waking and sleeping ambulatory blood pressure and heart rate and whether information about these traits would provide a source of racial and gender differences in these measures. Ambulatory blood pressure and heart rate were recorded over a 24-hour period in 58 black and 86 white college students equally divided by gender. Waking and sleeping values were examined as a function of gender, race, and personality factors. Independent of personality fac

Three-year follow-up and clinical implications of a mindfulness meditation-based stress reduction intervention in the treatment of anxiety disorders.

A previous study of 22 medical patients with DSM-III-R-defined anxiety disorders showed clinically and statistically significant improvements in subjective and objective symptoms of anxiety and panic following an 8-week outpatient physician-referred group stress reduction intervention based on mindfulness meditation. Twenty subjects demonstrated significant reductions in Hamilton and Beck Anxiety and Depression scores postintervention and at 3-month follow-up. In this study, 3-year follow-up data were obtained and analyzed on 18 of the original 22 subjects to probe long-term effects. Repeated

The impact of negative emotions on prognosis following myocardial infarction: is it more than depression?

This study examine the importance of major depression symptoms, history of major depression, anxiety, anger-in, anger-out, and perceived social support, measured in the hospital after a myocardial infarction (MI), in predicting cardiac events over the subsequent 12 months in a sample of 222 patients. Cardiac events included both recurrences of acute coronary syndromes (unstable angina admissions and survived and nonsurvived MI recurrences) and probable arrhythmic events (survived cardiac arrests and arrhythmic deaths). Major depression, depressive symptoms, anxiety, and history of major depres

Effect of short-term cognitive psychotherapy on recurrence of duodenal ulcer: a prospective randomized trial.

The aim of this prospective, randomized trial was to assess whether short-term cognitive psychotherapy (10 sessions during 4 months) could reduce the 1-year recurrence rate of duodenal ulcer. One group received psychotherapy; one group was a control group. One hundred patients, aged 17 to 64 years, with duodenal ulcer were selected from March 1989 to May 1991. The main outcome measure was relapse of duodenal ulcer, which was verified by endoscopy. When psychotherapy started after cessation of antiulcer medication, the relapse-free time was significantly shorter in the therapy group than in the

Mood regulation expectancies, coping responses, depression, and sense of burden in female caregivers of Alzheimer's patients.

This study focused on the role of generalized expectancies for negative mood regulation in coping among caregivers to Alzheimer's disease patients. Self-report measures were used to obtain information on expectancies, hassles, coping strategies, depressive symptoms, and sense of burden from 73 female primary caregivers in support groups. Stronger expectancies for negative mood regulation were associated with less severe depressive symptoms, even with stress levels and coping responses controlled. These expectancies were also associated with less avoidant coping, but were unrelated to active co

Epidemiology of suicidal behavior among Korean adolescents.

The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of suicidal behaviors and their relation to background characteristics, social integration, academic stress, psychological distress, and substance use in a stratified random sample of 9886 high school students in Korea. In a multiple logistic regression, we found that depression was the strongest predictor of suicidal behaviors. The other factors significantly associated with suicidal behaviors were gender, academic stress, hostility and substance use. These results indicate that early identification of risk factors for suicidal behavior

Plasma alprazolam concentrations. Relation to efficacy and side effects in the treatment of panic disorder.

A series of 237 patients with DSM-III-diagnosed panic disorder, or agoraphobia with panic attacks, received alprazolam as part of the placebo-controlled Cross-National Collaborative Panic Study. After a 1-week drug-free period, alprazolam dosage was titrated upward with the objective of reaching 6.0 mg/d in all patients. At week 3 of treatment, alprazolam plasma levels were significantly correlated with daily dosage (regression slope: 11.7 ng/mL per milligram per day) but with considerable individual variation. Among patients with spontaneous panic attacks, 70% of those with plasma alprazolam

Laughter in a psychiatric ward. Somatic, emotional, social, and clinical influences on schizophrenic patients.

The study was designed to explore the potential therapeutic effects of humor on hospitalized schizophrenics. For this purpose, in the first stage, we conducted a review of findings in regard to physical health, emotions, psychiatric state, and social behavior. In the second stage, we carried out an experiment with 34 resident patients in two chronic schizophrenic wards who were exposed to 70 movies during 3 months. The experimental group was exposed to humorous movies only, and the control group to different kinds of movies. Before and after the exposure to films for 3 months, both groups were

Agoraphobics and social phobics: differences in background factors, syndrome profiles and therapeutic response.

Seventy-three agoraphobic and 31 social phobic women, all rated unsuitable for insight-oriented psychotherapy, were compared regarding family and personal history, intelligence, personality and factors pertaining to the disorder. The same patients, with 11 men included in the social phobic group, were also compared regarding response to four randomly assigned types of treatment given over a 3 month period, with a 9 months' follow-up. The following differences were revealed: 1) Social phobias were associated with a higher social class of the parental home, higher education, higher scores on ver

Symptom checklist syndromes in the general population. Correlations with psychotherapeutic drug use.

Using symptom checklists administered on a large scale by survey interviewers in the 1979 National Survey of Psychotherapeutic Drug Use, we developed a method for classifying survey respondents by syndromes. These syndromes had symptoms and other characteristics consistent with their DSM-III diagnostic counterparts and showed one-year prevalence rates in accord with available epidemiologic data: Major Depression, 5.1%; Agoraphobia-Panic, 1.2%; Other Phobia, 2.3%; and Generalized Anxiety, 6.4%. However, the anxiety-related syndromes occurred less frequently than clinical lore might suggest. The

Depression or asthenia related to metabolic disturbances in obese patients after intestinal bypass surgery.

This study was an attempt to compare psychological and biological variables in 43 obese patients after intestinal bypass surgery. The difficulties in expressing the psychological variables quantitatively are discussed on the basis of the concept of transferability. By use of an expanded version of the Beck Depression Inventory and the Marke-Nyman Temperament Scale we could demonstrate that items concerning asthenia (self-dislike, irritability, work retardation, insomnia, fatigability, somatic preoccupation about aches and pains, loss of libido, headache, vertigo, palpitations, dryness of the m

[Perceptions of the disease and self-assessment of the quality of life in patients with Parkinson's disease].

UNLABELLED: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive, multisystem neurodegenerative disease that significantly affects patients' quality of life. The perception of the disease plays a crucial role in the psychological adaptation of patients. The poorly studied relationship between the self-assessment of the disease, neuropsychiatric disorders (depression, anxiety, apathy, cognitive disorders), and the quality of life of patients emphasizes the need for further research in this area. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship of the perceptions of the disease with motor, cognitive, emotional imp

Evaluating the psychometric properties of the 24-item and 12-item real relationship inventory-client forms.

The current study assessed the psychometric properties of the long (24 items) and brief (12 items) versions of the Real Relationship Inventory-Client (RRI-C) in a United States sample. The RRI-C is the most used quantitative measure of the real relationship construct, yet its psychometric properties have not been explored outside its development studies. A sample of 700 adults in individual psychotherapy was recruited in the study and filled out a comprehensive battery of measures. Analytical techniques included confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM

Sexual function of transgender women after gender affirming surgery: A mini review.

A transgender person has a gender identity opposite to the sex assigned at birth. Transgender individuals may have altered sexual function (SF) due to psychosocial factors related to body image distortion, shame, and dissatisfaction with genital appearance, and these conditions can increase the risk of sexual dysfunction. This study aimed to characterize the SF of trans-women after gender affirming surgery (GAS). We reviewed the Pubmed database for studies published between January 2008 and December 2021. 17 studies were included, four were cross-sectional studies, one prospective study, four

The Role of the Embodiment Disturbance in the Anorexia Nervosa Psychopathology: A Network Analysis Study.

Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is characterized by body image distortion. From a phenomenological perspective, body image disturbance has been associated with a more profound disturbance encompassing disorders of the way persons experience their own body. The aim of this study was to disentangle the complex dynamics that connect the experience of one's own body and self-identity to the psychopathological features of AN by applying a network analysis. Fifty-seven patients with AN restrictive subtype and 27 with AN binge-purging subtype participated in the study. Eating Disorders Inventory-2 and Identity

Domains of life satisfaction in social anxiety disorder: relation to symptoms and response to cognitive-behavioral therapy.

A general sense of satisfaction with life has been shown to be discriminable from symptom levels and disability in clinical populations. The current study focused on the utility of identifying domains of life satisfaction in social anxiety disorder and differential changes in these domains following cognitive-behavioral group therapy (CBGT). An exploratory principal axis factor analysis of the items of the Quality of Life Inventory in clients with a principal diagnosis of social anxiety disorder (N=138) yielded four domains of life satisfaction: (1) Achievement, (2) Social Functioning, (3) Per
