Effects of resting modes on human lumbar spines with different levels of degenerated intervertebral discs: a finite element investigation.

BACKGROUND: The negative effect of long-term working load on lumbar is widely known. However, insertion of different resting modes on long-term working load, and its effects on the lumbar spine is rarely studied. The purpose of this study was to investigate the biomechanical responses of lumbar spine with different levels of degenerated intervertebral discs under different working-resting modes. METHODS: Four poroelastic finite element models of lumbar spinal segments L2-L3 with different grades of disc degeneration were developed. Four different loading conditions represented four different

Skin tissue engineering for the infected wound site: biodegradable PLA nanofibers and a novel approach for silver ion release evaluated in a 3D coculture system of keratinocytes and Staphylococcus aureus.

Wound infection presents a challenging and growing problem. With the increased prevalence and growth of multidrug-resistant bacteria, there is a mounting need to reduce and eliminate wound infections using methodologies that limit the ability of bacteria to evolve into further drug-resistant strains. A well-known strategy for combating bacterial infection and preventing wound sepsis is through the delivery of silver ions to the wound site. High surface area silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) allowing extensive silver ion release have therefore been explored in different wound dressings and/or skin s

Hollow hydroxyapatite microspheres: a novel bioactive and osteoconductive carrier for controlled release of bone morphogenetic protein-2 in bone regeneration.

The regeneration of large bone defects is a common and significant clinical problem. Limitations associated with existing treatments such as autologous bone grafts and allografts have increased the need for synthetic bone graft substitutes. The objective of this study was to evaluate the capacity of novel hollow hydroxyapatite (HA) microspheres to serve as a carrier for controlled release of bone morphogenetic-2 (BMP2) in bone regeneration. Hollow HA microspheres (106-150 μm) with a high surface area (>100 m2 g(-1)) and a mesoporous shell wall (pore size 10-20 nm) were created using a glass co

Osteoconductivity of porous polyethylene in human skull.

PURPOSE: Recently, biomaterials have been generally used in reconstruction of a bony defect or augmentation of the facial skeleton. Medpor implants in vivo in animal models showed both soft tissue and bony ingrowth into its pores and have been widely accepted to have an osteoconduction activity. However, in an in vivo study in humans, there was no definite evidence of bony ingrowth into the pores of Medpor. This study examined the osteoconductivity of Medpor in human vivo. METHODS: We gained a total of 24 Medpor blocks when removing a distraction device in 11 patients with craniosynostosis. T

Visible light-induced electron transfer from di-mu-oxo-bridged dinuclear Mn complexes to Cr centers in silica nanopores.

The compound (bpy) 2Mn (III)(mu-O) 2Mn (IV)(bpy) 2, a structural model relevant for the photosynthetic water oxidation complex, was coupled to single Cr (VI) charge-transfer chromophores in the channels of the nanoporous oxide AlMCM-41. Mn K-edge EXAFS spectroscopy confirmed that the di-mu-oxo dinuclear Mn core of the complex is unaffected when loaded into the nanoscale pores. Observation of the 16-line EPR signal characteristic of Mn (III)(mu-O) 2Mn (IV) demonstrates that the majority of the loaded complexes retained their nascent oxidation state in the presence or absence of Cr (VI) centers.

Novel wound models for characterizing ibuprofen release from foam dressings.

The purpose of the present study was to design and characterize low exudate level wound (LEW) and high exudate level wound (HEW) in vitro models by means of investigating therapeutic substance release from exudate-absorbing formulations. Biatain Ibu foam dressing was used to characterize in vitro release of ibuprofen within the models and also for in vitro-in vivo correlation (IVIVC) studies. Ibuprofen release was described by zero order rate constants of 0.0147 for 1 day and 0.0038 mg/cm(2) h for 3 days in HEW and LEW models, respectively. The release is suggested to be controlled by ibuprofe

Multiple-scattering extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis of nanostructured iron(III) oxide in the pore system of mesoporous carbon CMK-1.

This work is devoted to the EXAFS analysis of nanostructured iron(III) oxide synthesized inside the pore system of mesoporous carbon CMK-1. A detailed study of the recording, preparation and evaluation of data recorded in fluorescence mode at the iron K-edge with and without multiple scattering is shown. The results obtained show that the local structure of Fe3+ inside nanostructured iron(III) oxide is different to that of the bulk material. Due to the small particle size, data analysis is much more difficult and data preparation more complex. Incorporating multiple scattering paths in the Fou

Haemarthros induced articular cartilage degradation.

The statement that blood in the articular cavity is cause of cartilage degradation is widely accepted as an axiom. Although the causes of the different articular diseases were explained in numerous studies, none of them has clarified the pathomechanism of haemarthrosis. Our aims were: 1/ to give a morphological description of the blood induced changes in the cartilage, 2/ to verify that the haemarthros is the cause of the cartilage degradation. 10 white rabbits were used in our experimental model. Artificial haemarthros was produced in their left hind knees by intraarticular injection of their

Mesoporous catechin hydrogel for enhanced astaxanthin-based inflammatory bowel disease therapy.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a persistent intestinal inflammation driven by epithelial barrier dysfunction, immunological imbalance, and microbial dysbiosis. The restoration of gut homeostasis through biomaterial-based strategies offers a potential avenue for alleviating inflammation in IBD. Herein, an alginate-based hydrogel incorporating astaxanthin-loaded mesoporous catechin nanoparticles (AST@MCN-Gel) was designed to relieve inflammation and rebalance gut homeostasis. The mesoporous framework of MCN enabled effective encapsulation of the hydrophobic AST, thereby increasing its water

Safe and Localized Lentiviral Gene Delivery via Injectable Mesoporous Scaffolds for Potent Antitumor Immunity.

Lentiviral vectors offer potent and sustained gene expression, but their in vivo use remains limited by safety concerns, particularly the risks of systemic dissemination and insertional mutagenesis. To address these limitations, we present a spatially confined lentiviral gene delivery method that enables safe and efficient in vivo targeted transduction of dendritic cells (DCs) via a modular injectable scaffold. By attaching lentiviral vectors encoding a tumor antigen on the surface of mesoporous silica scaffold preloaded with granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor, we create a self-a

Enhancing curcumin bioavailability using bifunctional periodic mesoporous organosilica for pH-responsive anticancer drug delivery.

This research aimed to improve the bioavailability and anticancer efficacy of curcumin by leveraging the unique properties of bifunctional periodic mesoporous organosilica (BFPMO). The imidazolium and benzene organic moieties embedded in the pore walls of BFPMO, play dual supporting and stabilizing functions for curcumin without causing pore blockage, thereby facilitating high drug loading content (60 %) and excellent encapsulation efficiency (88 %). Comprehensive structural analyses (N₂ adsorption-desorption, FT-IR, TGA, HRTEM, FESEM, EDAX) confirmed successful curcumin immobilization. BFPMO

Biotinylated ε-Polylysine-Cyclodextrin-Coated Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles for Targeted pH-Responsive Baicalin Delivery.

INTRODUCTION: Baicalin (BAI) is a natural flavonoid with antitumor potential, but its poor water solubility and low bioavailability limit clinical use. Mesoporous silica nanoparticles are promising drug carriers due to their large surface area and tunable pore structure, yet premature drug leakage remains a key challenge. METHODS: A multifunctional nanoplatform, designated as BPCD@BAI@BMSN, was constructed to enable efficient baicalin loading, pH-responsive gated release, and biotin-mediated active tumor targeting. A novel biotin-ε-polylysine-cyclodextrin (BPCD) conjugate was synthesized via

Mesoporous multimetallic PdPtBi nanozymes target redox imbalance and glutamine deprivation for immuno-chemodynamic therapy.

Therapeutic resistance remains a formidable challenge in oncology, mainly due to the chaotic tumor microenvironment (TME), which drive tumor progression and adaptive resistance via a self-sustaining metabolic-oxidative feedback loop. Herein, a multifunctional nanotherapeutic platform based on PdPtBi multimetallic nanozymes (PPB MMNs) is rationally engineered to address these challenges by simultaneously targeting reactive oxygen species (ROS) modulation and glutamine (Gln) metabolic disruption. Specifically, the PPB MMNs display cascade enzyme-mimicking activities resembling peroxidase (POD),

Multifunctional slippery nanoemulsion-infused porous nitric oxide-releasing surfaces.

The need for biocompatible materials for medical devices remains critical, as complications such as infection, thrombosis, and biofouling significantly contribute to medical device failure and patient morbidity and mortality. In recent years, nitric oxide (NO)-releasing technologies have been explored to mitigate bacterial infections, particularly those stemming from common gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial pathogens. However, NO-releasing materials do not inherently possess anti-fouling capabilities. Combination strategies that use NO and anti-fouling surfaces (e.g., slippery lubrican
