Effects of spinal stabilization exercises in women with benign joint hypermobility syndrome: a randomized controlled trial.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of an 8-week lumbar spinal stabilization exercise program on pain, trunk muscle endurance, and postural stability in women with benign joint hypermobility syndrome (BJHS). Women with BJHS were randomly allocated into exercise (n = 20) and control (n = 18) groups. The lumbar spinal stabilization exercise program was carried out 3 days a week for 8 weeks. BJHS with Brighton criteria, musculoskeletal pain intensity with Visual Analog Scale, trunk muscle endurance with McGill's trunk muscle endurance tests, and postural stability as static and d

The effect of six weeks endurance training on dynamic muscular control of the knee following fatiguing exercise.

The aim of the study was to examine whether six weeks of endurance training minimizes the effects of fatigue on postural control during dynamic postural perturbations. Eighteen healthy volunteers were assigned to either a 6-week progressive endurance training program on a cycle ergometer or a control group. At week 0 and 7, dynamic exercise was performed on an ergometer until exhaustion and immediately after, the anterior-posterior centre of pressure (COP) sway was analyzed during full body perturbations. Maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) of the knee flexors and extensors, muscle fiber cond

Orthostatic hypotension: a common, serious and underrecognized problem in hospitalized patients.

Orthostatic hypotension (OH) is strongly age-dependent, with a prevalence ranging from 5% to 11% in middle age to 30% or higher in the elderly. It is also closely associated with other common chronic diseases, including hypertension, congestive heart failure, diabetes mellitus, and Parkinson's disease. Most studies of OH have been performed in population cohorts or elderly residents of extended care facilities, but in this review, we draw attention to a problem little studied to date: OH in hospitalized patients. The prevalence of OH in all hospitalized patients is not known because most studi

Modeling movement disorders--CRPS-related dystonia explained by abnormal proprioceptive reflexes.

Humans control their movements using adaptive proprioceptive feedback from muscle afferents. The interaction between proprioceptive reflexes and biomechanical properties of the limb is essential in understanding the etiology of movement disorders. A non-linear neuromuscular model of the wrist incorporating muscle dynamics and neural control was developed to test hypotheses on fixed dystonia. Dystonia entails sustained muscle contractions resulting in abnormal postures. Lack of inhibition is often hypothesized to result in hyperreflexia (exaggerated reflexes), which may cause fixed dystonia. In…

A mutation in the IL-2 receptor gamma chain gene associated with X-linked severe combined immunodeficiency accompanying opisthotonus.

Severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) is an inherited disease with profoundly defective T cells, B cells, and NK cells. X-linked severe combined immunodeficiency (X-SCID) is its most common form. In this report, we describe a 4-month old male with X-SCID who also showed opisthotonic posturing. Opisthotonus represents abnormal motor posturing and is defined as the posturing, in which the neck and back are arched posteriorly. The patient was referred to our hospital with liver dysfunction, respiratory distress, anal abscess, poor feeding and wasting; the patient appeared to suffer from severe

The effects of menstrual cycle phase on clinical measures of concussion in healthy college-aged females.

The management of concussion and mild traumatic brain injury is an area of clinical uncertainty for many sports medicine professionals. While recent studies suggest sex differences in neurocognitive function may exist, our understanding of the effects of menstrual cycle phase and oral contraceptive pill (OCP) use in healthy females is limited. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether there were changes in neurocognitive function, postural stability and self-reported symptoms between the early and late stages of the menstrual cycle, and also to identify whether performance across me

Force platform recordings in the diagnosis of primary orthostatic tremor.

Primary orthostatic tremor (OT) consists of rhythmical muscle contractions at a frequency of around 16 Hz, causing discomfort and/or unsteadiness while standing. Diagnosis has hitherto relied on recording Electromyography (EMG) from affected muscles. The main aim of this study was to see if the characteristic postural tremor in OT can be identified with force platforms. We also quantified postural sway in OT patients to assess their degree of objective unsteadiness. Finally, we investigated the time relations between bursts of activity in the various affected muscle groups. Subjects stood on a

Ataxia of stance in different types of alcohol dependence--a posturographic study.

The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of ataxia of stance in different types of alcohol-dependent patients. Posturographic measurements were performed in 82 abstinent alcohol-dependent patients and 54 healthy controls in order to analyse postural control. According to Lesch and co-workers, alcohol dependence was classified as total abstinence (Type I), drinking without loss of control (Type II), fluctuating course (Type III), and persistent severe drinking (Type IV). The mechanisms of alcohol dependence in these subtypes can be summarized as follows: Type I patients drink alcohol

Motor sequencing with left hemisphere damage. Are some cognitive deficits specific to limb apraxia?

Sixteen left-hemisphere stroke patients, who were apraxic or nonapraxic, and 17 control subjects performed sequences of hand postures that varied in the number of different postures (repetitive and heterogeneous) and sequence length (one to five). Performance of the left hand (ipsilateral to stroke) was compared with a control group using the left hand. All stroke patients had slower reaction times and were slower to execute single hand postures, but the apraxic group was not slower than the nonapraxic group. Both the apraxic and the nonapraxic groups had similar problems scheduling or timing …

Left ventricular pseudoaneurysm as a complication of silent myocardial infarction in a patient with a history of pulmonary sarcoidosis.

BACKGROUND: Although head elevation is an early first-line treatment for elevated intracranial pressure (ICP), the use of the head-down or prone position in managing neurocritical patients is controversial because a change in a position directly affects the intracranial and cerebral perfusion pressure, which may cause secondary brain injury and affect patient outcomes. This study compared the effects of two postural drainage positions (30° head-up tilt and 0° head flat) on the prognosis of neurocritical care patients with complicated pneumonia and a clinical pulmonary infection score (CPIS) ≥5

The influence of visual input and attention on gait initiation in people with Parkinson disease.

INTRODUCTION: Gait initiation relies on the integration of postural control, sensory input, and attention. All three components are impaired in Parkinson disease, which may contribute to characteristic gait initiation deficits, including shorter, slower first steps and smaller anticipatory postural adjustments. Understanding how sensory and attentional demands influence gait initiation could inform interventions that target underlying mechanisms rather than focusing solely on managing symptoms. This study examined the roles of vision and attention on gait initiation in people with Parkinson di

[Experience of using peripheral magnetic stimulation to restore diaphragm function in hemiparetic patients after stroke].

UNLABELLED: Diaphragm dysfunction as one of the manifestations of hemiparesis, can play a certain role in the persistent respiratory, motor and postural complications of cerebral stroke. This disorder usually proceeds with few symptoms, is underestimated against the background of other manifestations of hemiparesis and may reduce the overall effectiveness of rehabilitation measures. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the results of peripheral magnetic stimulation in hemiparetic patients due to stroke in order to restore diaphragm function and its potential influence on postural balance, respiratory funct

Head Stability and Head-Trunk Coordination in Horseback Riders: The Contribution of Visual Information According to Expertise.

Maintaining equilibrium while riding a horse is a challenging task that involves complex sensorimotor processes. We evaluated the relative contribution of visual information (static or dynamic) to horseback riders' postural stability (measured from the variability of segment position in space) and the coordination modes they adopted to regulate balance according to their level of expertise. Riders' perceptual typologies and their possible relation to postural stability were also assessed. Our main assumption was that the contribution of visual information to postural control would be reduced a

Dimensions of the cervical neural foramen in conditions of spinal deformity: an ex vivo biomechanical investigation using specimen-specific CT imaging.

PURPOSE: Patients with cervical spondylosis commonly present with neck pain, radiculopathy or myelopathy. As degenerative changes progress, multiple factors including disc height loss, thoracic kyphosis, and facetogenic changes can increase the risk of neural structure compression. This study investigated the impact of cervical deformity including forward head posture (FHP) and upper thoracic kyphosis, on the anatomy of the cervical neural foramen. METHODS: Postural changes of 13 human cervical spine specimens (Occiput-T1, age 50.6 years; range 21-67) were assessed in response to prescribed c…
