3D airway model to assess airway dead space.

High flow therapy works partly by washout of airway dead space, the volume of which has not been quantified in newborns. This observational study aimed to quantify airway dead space in infants and to compare efficacy of washout between high flow devices in three-dimensional (3D) printed airway models of infants weighing 2.5-3.8 kg. Nasopharyngeal airway dead space volume was 1.5-2.0 mL/kg in newborns. A single cannula device produced lower carbon dioxide (CO2) levels than a dual cannula device (33.7, 31.2, 23.1, 15.9, 10.9 and 6.3 mm Hg vs 36.8, 35.5, 32.1, 26.8, 23.1 and 18.8 mm Hg at flow ra

Three-dimensional surgical modelling with an open-source software protocol: study of precision and reproducibility in mandibular reconstruction with the fibula free flap.

Very few surgical teams currently use totally independent and free solutions to perform three-dimensional (3D) surgical modelling for osseous free flaps in reconstructive surgery. This study assessed the precision and technical reproducibility of a 3D surgical modelling protocol using free open-source software in mandibular reconstruction with fibula free flaps and surgical guides. Precision was assessed through comparisons of the 3D surgical guide to the sterilized 3D-printed guide, determining accuracy to the millimetre level. Reproducibility was assessed in three surgical cases by volumetri

Predicting dyslexia using prereading skills: the role of sensorimotor and cognitive abilities.

BACKGROUND: It is well established that phonological awareness, print knowledge and rapid naming predict later reading difficulties. However, additional auditory, visual and motor difficulties have also been observed in dyslexic children. It is examined to what extent these difficulties can be used to predict later literacy difficulties. METHOD: An unselected sample of 267 children at school entry completed a wide battery of tasks associated with dyslexia. Their reading was tested 2, 3 and 4 years later and poor readers were identified (n = 42). Logistic regression and multiple case study app

Preliminary evaluation of the educational strategy of a community alcohol use action research project in Scandicci (Italy).

A community project aiming to promote responsible drinking and to prevent alcohol use-related problems in three districts of Scandicci, a town west of Florence, was undertaken between 2000 and 2004. The community totaled 21,851 residents. Among other initiatives, 8,000 carousels that provided information on different levels of alcohol consumption and more than 1,000 prints of nine drawings by local school children that promoted moderate consumption were distributed in the community, respectively, during February-July 2002 and May-June 2003. These formed part of a community educational strategy

[Correlation of cytologic and DNA ploidy evidence and prognosis in childhood Wilm's tumor].

A retrospective evaluation of the clinical features, cytological, biological (DNA) and histological data on 29 children with Wilms' tumor. Two prognosis-related groups were identified: (1) good outcome (17)--all children, aged 4-15, had survived by end of follow-up; (2) bad outcome (12)--all children died within 4 months--4 years. Cytological examination by fine-needle biopsy of smears was carried out prior to preoperative neoadjuvant therapy in all 29 patients; in addition, print smears from resected tumor were taken from 21. Blastemal, stromal, epithelial and anaplastic cells levels were est

Cerebral mechanisms involved in word reading in dyslexic children: a magnetic source imaging approach.

The purpose of the present investigation was to describe spatiotemporal brain activation profiles during word reading using magnetic source imaging (MSI). Ten right-handed dyslexic children with severe phonological decoding problems and eight age-matched non-impaired readers were tested in two recognition tasks, one involving spoken and the other printed words. Dyslexic children's activation profiles during the printed word recognition task consistently featured activation of the left basal temporal cortices followed by activation of the right temporoparietal areas (including the angular gyrus

Gait-stance duration as a measure of injury and recovery in the rat sciatic nerve model.

The rat sciatic nerve is a well-established animal model for the study of peripheral nerve crush injury. Footprint analysis is the most widely used non-invasive method of measuring functional recovery after injury in this model. However, this method has significant limitations due to inability to obtain clear reproducible prints, especially when the injury is severe, and variation of these prints with gait velocity. In the case of contracture or toe loss, footprint analysis is unreliable. We describe a new technique, gait-stance duration, which is capable of non-invasively quantitating functio

The Tensile Expansion Microscopy (TExM) cell stretcher: an iris expansion device integrated with automated real-time autofocus and tracking to super-resolve cells.

UNLABELLED: Mechanical stretchers are used to physically expand biological samples for microscopic studies of mechanobiology. Existing stretchers suffer from limited strain capacity and non-quantifiable forces, along with focus drift and feature-tracking limitations during microscopy. We develop an iris-based cell stretcher that applies isotropic equibiaxial force to achieve aerial strain of 1664% that corresponds to 4.2 x linear expansion for Tensile Expansion Microscopy (TExM), a super-resolution method which increases sample size above the diffraction limit of light. The TExM stretcher uses

Clickable PEG-norbornene microgels support suspension bioprinting and microvascular assembly.

The development of perfusable and multiscale vascular networks remains one of the largest challenges in tissue engineering. As such, there is a need for the creation of customizable and facile methods to produce robustly vascularized constructs. In this study, secondarily crosslinkable (clickable) poly(ethylene glycol)-norbornene (PEGNB) microbeads were produced and evaluated for their ability to sequentially support suspension bioprinting and microvascular self-assembly towards the aim of engineering hierarchical vasculature. The clickable PEGNB microbead slurry exhibited mechanical behavior …

A microCT-based platform to quantify drug targeting.

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a frequent and debilitating complication of traumatic musculoskeletal injuries and orthopedic procedures. Prophylactic dosing of botulinum toxin type A (BTxA) holds potential as a novel treatment option if accurately distributed throughout soft-tissue volumes where protection is clinically desired. We developed a high-resolution, microcomputed tomography (microCT)-based imaging strategy to assess drug distribution and validated this platform by quantifying distribution achieved via a prototype delivery system versus a single-bolus injection. The effect of bone defect size on the 3D accuracy of alveolar bone augmentation performed with additively manufactured patient-specific titanium mesh.

OBJECTIVE: Additively manufactured (3D-printed) titanium meshes have been adopted in the dental field as non-resorbable membranes for guided bone regeneration (GBR) surgery. However, according to previous studies, inaccuracies between planned and created bone volume and contour are common, and many reasons have been speculated to affect its accuracy. The size of the alveolar bone defect can significantly increase patient-specific titanium mesh design and surgical difficulty. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze and investigate the effect of bone defect size on the 3D accuracy of alveolar bon

A digital workflow for single complete denture using a multi-functional diagnostic denture.

Creating a single complete denture against natural dentition can be challenging. To facilitate the clinical procedure and promote balanced occlusion, we developed a digital workflow of a single complete denture using a multi-functional diagnostic denture (DD). The DD was digitally designed and fabricated using a three-dimensional printing process to create a guide for tooth grinding in opposing dentition and a final impression that allows the jaw relationship and dynamic articulation to be recorded by an intraoral scanner. The definitive complete denture was combined with a milled artificial d…

Scaffold biomaterials and nano-based therapeutic strategies for skeletal muscle regeneration.

Skeletal muscle is integral to the functioning of the human body. Several pathological conditions, such as trauma (primary lesion) or genetic diseases such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), can affect and impair its functions or exceed its regeneration capacity. Tissue engineering (TE) based on natural, synthetic and hybrid biomaterials provides a robust platform for developing scaffolds that promote skeletal muscle regeneration, strength recovery, vascularization and innervation. Recent 3D-cell printing technology and the use of nanocarriers for the release of drugs, peptides and antisens…
