Complexity of Psychological and Behavioral Science in Diabetes: The 2025 Richard R. Rubin Award Lecture.

Complexity was a strong and persistent theme in Richard Rubin's work on psychology and behavior science in diabetes. That complexity began with his recognizing that, as challenging or horrible as diabetes may be, we can also manage to live good lives with it. With his many contributions along the way, this article will review the growth of our field to include 1) recognition of the psychological problems and challenges of diabetes; 2) developing ways both to raise up the very real challenges of diabetes and to promote leading good lives with it; 3) understanding how psychological problems may

[Specific characteristics of mental disorders in people with disorders of intellectual development-Consequences for psychiatric and psychotherapeutic care].

The group of people with disorders of intellectual development (DID) have an above-average need for psychiatric and psychotherapeutic care. The psychiatric and psychotherapeutic mainstream care system should be regarded as the primary counterpart for professional support. To this end, the mainstream care system must adapt more than before to the specific needs of this group. Specialized services should only be used when the knowledge and available skills in the standard care system, in terms of action, interpretation and communication, do not enable appropriately tailored treatment. The spectr

Comparative efficacy and acceptability of sleep interventions for children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders: a protocol for a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) frequently experience sleep problems. Although various pharmacological, behavioral, and physical interventions have demonstrated efficacy in improving sleep among children with ASD, the relative effectiveness of these interventions remains unclear. METHODS: We will conduct a systematic literature search to identify randomized controlled trials that evaluate the efficacy of pharmacological (e.g., melatonin), psychological (e.g., cognitive behavioral therapy), and physical (e.g., bright light therapy) interventions for sle

Pharmacological Aspects in the Management of Children and Adolescents with Prader-Willi Syndrome.

Prader-Willi syndrome is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder that impacts the musculoskeletal, endocrine, pulmonary, neurologic, ocular, and gastrointestinal systems. In addition, individuals with Prader-Willi syndrome have issues with cognitive development, characteristic behavioral problems, and perhaps most profoundly, appetite control. Currently, the only US Food and Drug Administration-approved therapy for Prader-Willi syndrome is growth hormone, which has been Food and Drug Administration approved for > 20 years for the treatment of growth failure in Prader-Willi syndrome. Growth hormone

The Impact of Stress on the Functioning and Survival of Transplanted Kidneys-Biological Mechanisms, Clinical Implications, and Therapeutic Perspectives.

Stress is well known to affect the immune system. However, in patients suffering from end-stage renal disease (ESRD) who underwent a kidney transplant (KT), the problem of stress appears to still be underestimated. The review aims to discuss the influence of chronic stress on the immune function and the relationship between chronic stress and the fate of a transplanted kidney. Therefore, we analyzed the relevant literature, searching for articles linking chronic stress to kidney transplant. Although the biology of stress is well documented in the literature, its impact on the fate of transplan

Emotion regulation use in daily-life and its association with success of emotion-regulation, self-efficacy, stress, and state rumination.

INTRODUCTION: Investigations on emotion regulation strategies (ERS) primarily focus on the influence of instructed emotion regulation (ER) on outcomes. However, recent work has shown that selection of ERS is dependent on, e.g., situational demands and personal resources. METHODS: In this current investigation, we used an online diary to investigate ERS used by free choice and their association with ER-success, stress and rumination. We identified four factors of ERS: cognitive perspective change, cognitive-behavioral problem-solving, suppression-distraction and body-social ERS. Associations o

Stabilizing axin leads to optic nerve hypoplasia in a mouse model of autism.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a group of neurodevelopment disorders characterized by deficits in social interaction and communication, and repetitive or stereotyped behavior. Autistic children are more likely to have vision problems, and ASD is unusually common among blind people. However, the mechanisms behind the vision disorders in autism are unclear. Stabilizing WNT-targeted scaffold protein Axin2 by XAV939 during embryonic development causes overproduction of cortical neurons and leads to autistic-like behaviors in mice. In this study, we investigated the relationship between vision a

Prader-Willi Syndrome and Chromosome 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 Region: A Review.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a complex genetic disorder with three PWS molecular genetic classes and presents as severe hypotonia, failure to thrive, hypogonadism/hypogenitalism and developmental delay during infancy. Hyperphagia, obesity, learning and behavioral problems, short stature with growth and other hormone deficiencies are identified during childhood. Those with the larger 15q11-q13 Type I deletion with the absence of four non-imprinted genes (NIPA1, NIPA2, CYFIP1, TUBGCP5) from the 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 region are more severely affected compared with those with PWS having a smaller Type

Investigations of Personality Trait in Subacute Post-Stroke Patients: Some Preliminary Observations.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Personality change is an important psychiatric complication following stroke linked to severe affective dysregulation and behavioral alterations. METHODS: We investigated personality traits in 20 patients (age 45.37 ± 13.41 years) with subacute stroke submitted to rehabilitation training within 1-3 months after a first-onset stroke. All patients underwent psychological evaluation by using the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 for adults (PID-5), a specific instrument that enables traits (dimensions and facets) to be assessed by providing a personality profile, and the

Targeting PI3K by Natural Products: A Potential Therapeutic Strategy for Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a highly prevalent childhood psychiatric disorder. In general, a child with ADHD has significant attention problems with difficulty concentrating on a subject and is generally associated with impulsivity and excessive activity. The etiology of ADHD in most patients is unknown, although it is considered to be a multifactorial disease caused by a combination of genetics and environmental factors. Diverse factors, such as the existence of mental, nutritional, or general health problems during childhood, as well as smoking and alcohol drinking dur

Enhanced Brief Motivational Intervention for College Student Drinkers With ADHD: Goal-Directed Activation as a Mechanism of Change.

College students with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at risk for alcohol-related problems and disorders relative to their typically developing peers. Despite risk, the optimal therapeutic approach for reducing problem alcohol use in students with ADHD, and mechanisms of change underlying treatment effects in this population, are largely unknown. The current study evaluated putative mechanisms of change in a randomized controlled trial of two harm reduction interventions for college student drinkers with ADHD (N = 113; 49% male): brief motivational intervention plus support

Beneficial effects of a multidomain cognitive rehabilitation program for traumatic brain injury-associated diffuse axonal injury: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Neuropsychological rehabilitation is a crucial component of medical care for patients with diffuse axonal injury (DAI). However, current cognitive intervention programs directed to favor the training of specific domains individually have shown controversial results. Here, we evaluated the effectiveness of a neuropsychological rehabilitation program directed to favor training of attention, memory, visuospatial abilities, and executive functioning together in a patient with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI)-associated DAI. Skills attained by infants with congenital Zika syndrome: Pilot data from Brazil.

The recent Zika outbreak and its link to microcephaly and other birth defects in infants exposed in utero have garnered widespread international attention. Based on the severity of birth defects the extent of impairment in these infants is expected to be profound; however, virtually nothing is known regarding the developmental and behavioral sequela of congenital Zika syndrome. This pilot study collected parent-reported patterns of development and sleep in 47 infants with confirmed congenital Zika syndrome who are being followed for clinical services at the Altino Ventura Foundation (FAV) in R

Children's and parent's psychological profiles in selective mutism and generalized anxiety disorder: a clinical study.

Selective mutism (SM) is classified in DSM-5 as an anxiety disorder. The aim of the study was to investigate the psychological features of children with SM and their parental psychological profiles, compared to generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) children and their parents. The parents of 26 preschool children with SM and 32 with children with GAD filled out the child behavior check list for 1½-5 years (CBCL1½-5) and the symptom checklist-90-revised (SCL-90-R). Information about the children and their parents' histories was collected through clinical interviews. Children with SM scored higher t

Can Bayesian Theories of Autism Spectrum Disorder Help Improve Clinical Practice?

Diagnosis and individualized treatment of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) represent major problems for contemporary psychiatry. Tackling these problems requires guidance by a pathophysiological theory. In this paper, we consider recent theories that re-conceptualize ASD from a "Bayesian brain" perspective, which posit that the core abnormality of ASD resides in perceptual aberrations due to a disbalance in the precision of prediction errors (sensory noise) relative to the precision of predictions (prior beliefs). This results in percepts that are dominated by sensory inputs and less guided by t
