Brainstem plasticity and modified loudness following short-term use of hearing aids.

Previous research has shown that the threshold of the middle ear acoustic reflex is modified in adult listeners following 1 week of continuous monaural sensory deprivation [Munro and Blount, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 126, 568-571 (2009)]. The results of the present study provide evidence of plasticity in the brainstem of adult listeners following monaural auditory stimulation. Acoustic reflexes were obtained at a higher sound pressure level in the ear that had been fitted with a low-gain hearing aid for 5 days. These changes are in the opposite direction to those reported after sensory deprivation a…

[The vestibular system: from structure to function].

The two vestibular receptors, right and left, hidden in the petrous part of the temporal bone with the cochlear receptors, receive information from angular and linear movements of the head and transform them into a nerve message sent to the nuclei of the brainstem, which are connected directly on the one hand to the oculomotor nuclei, at the origin of the oculovestibular reflex (induction of nystagmus), and on the other hand, to the spinal motor neurons, at the origin of the vestibulospinal reflex. These reflexes are associated with responses to visual and somaesthetic information for maintena…

The possible role of nystagmus in motion sickness: a hypothesis.

An alternative hypothesis to that provided by conflict theory is formulated to account for motion sickness. The new approach is predicted on the oculocardiac reflex (i.e., bradycardia produced by extra-ocular muscle traction) (18) and empirical evidence that retrobulbar anesthesia significantly lowers the incidence of emesis after strabismus surgery (14). Eye muscle traction is presumed to elicit afferent signals that ultimately stimulate the vagus nerve (15). The same neuromotor sequence is presumed to occur during reflexive eye movements under vestibular control and during more complicated c…

The diagnostic accuracy of neuromonitoring for detecting postoperative bowel and bladder dysfunction in spinal oncology surgery: a case series.

PURPOSE: Postoperative bowel and bladder dysfunction (BBD) poses a significant risk following surgery of the sacral spinal segments and sacral nerve roots, particularly in neuro-oncology cases. The need for more reliable neuromonitoring techniques to enhance the safety of spine surgery is evident. METHODS: We conducted a case series comprising 60 procedures involving 56 patients, spanning from September 2022 to January 2024. We assessed the diagnostic accuracy of sacral reflexes (bulbocavernosus and external urethral sphincter reflexes) and compared them with transcranial motor evoked potenti…

Maximal Points of Head's Zone in Fixed Drug Eruption.

The principles determining the primary localization of lesions in fixed drug eruption (FDE) are still unknown. Studies investigating the predilection areas in FDE have indicated drug-related, trauma-related, or inflammation-related specific site involvement, as well as visceracutaneous reflex-related specific site involvement. The importance of viscerocutaneous reflexes for the location of dermatoses was first recognized in the 1960s. Head's zones are viscerocutaneous reflex projection fields on the skin that extend over certain dermatomes and possess a reflex-associated maximal point. Recentl…

Articulatory and Laryngeal Auditory-Motor Control Are Independent in Tonal Language Speakers.

PURPOSE: Speech production relies on both the articulatory and laryngeal subsystems. Previous studies on nontonal languages have shown that reflexive and adaptive responses to formant (articulatory parameter) perturbations differ from responses to pitch (or the fundamental frequency [fo], laryngeal parameter) perturbations, indicating that the articulatory and laryngeal subsystems rely on separate auditory-motor control mechanisms. However, in nontonal languages, formant differences generate lexical distinctions, while laryngeal parameters do not. Thus, it is unclear whether differences betwee…

Shaky hands are a part of motor neuron disease phenotype: clinical and electrophysiological study of 77 patients.

BACKGROUND: In the sharp contrast with the existing literature, we frequently observe minipolymyoclonus, tremor and pseudodystonic thumb posturing in patients with motor neuron disease. We conducted a clinical and electrophysiological study to describe phenomenology, prevalence and pathophysiology of involuntary movements in motor neuron disease. METHODS: We included 77 consecutive patients. Involuntary movements were assessed at rest and on action. Patients were videotaped. Arm muscle tone, power and deep tendon reflexes were evaluated. Accelerometry with electromyography was recorded in a s…

Neuropeptide/Receptor expression and plasticity in micturition pathways.

Several motor behaviors such as locomotion, respiration, sexual function, and micturition are generated by rhythmic and stereotyped motor pa … ladder and the smooth and striated muscle of the urethral sphincters. The lower urinary tract (LUT) reflex mechanisms, organized at the level of the lumbosacral spinal cord, are modulated predominantly by supraspinal controls. These LUT mechanisms include: (1) storage reflexes organized at the spinal level; (2) elimination reflexes organized at a suprasp …

Contribution of C-fiber afferent nerves and autonomic pathways in the urinary bladder to spinal c-fos expression induced by bladder irritation.

Previous studies have revealed that chemical irritation of the urinary bladder and urethral mucosa increases the expression of the immediate-early gene, c-fos, in the lumbosacral spinal cord of the rat. The present experiments were undertaken to determine whether drugs known to suppress bladder reflex pathways or spinal nociceptive mechanisms would influence c-fos expression induced by chemical irritation of the lower urinary tract (LUT). Capsaicin (100 mg/kg subcutaneous (s.c.), 7 days prior to the experiment) which does not block bladder reflexes but does desensitize C-fiber afferents, reduc…

Correlation between clinical signs of depth of anaesthesia and cerebral state index responses in dogs during induction of anaesthesia with propofol.

The cerebral state index (CSI) is used for monitoring EEG and depth of anaesthesia. The objective of this study was to analyse the correlation between ocular reflexes, CSI and estimated propofol plasma concentrations (PropCP) in dogs during induction of anaesthesia with propofol. Fourteen dogs were premedicated with acepromazine 0.05 mg kg(-1) IM. Anaesthesia was induced with a 200 ml h(-1) propofol 1% constant infusion rate until loss of corneal reflex using RugLoop II software with Beths' pharmacokinetic model to estimate PropCp. Palpebral reflex (PR) and the corneal reflex (CR) were tested …

Evidence for acid-sensing ion channel 3 (ASIC3) involvement in cough resulting from aspiration of gastric fluid.

Cough is essential to airway defence following aspiration. Using a relevant animal model, we set out to identify the mechanisms by which gastric fluid evokes coughing, the vagal afferents responsible for initiating this reflex and the ion channels directly activated by components of gastric fluid. We studied gastric fluid and citric acid evoked cough reflexes in guinea-pigs and, in parallel, their ability to activate airway vagal afferent nerves. Additionally, we utilized a single cell RT-PCR approach to determine the expression of acid sensitive ion channels by the vagal afferent neurones reg…

Evaluation of post-stroke spasticity from the subacute to chronic stages: A clinical and neurophysiologic study of motoneuron pool excitability.

Spasticity measured using clinical scales, such as the modified Ashworth scale (MAS), may not sufficiently evaluate the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions and predict prognosis. This study aimed to compare changes in H-reflex excitability in the spastic and unimpaired upper and lower limbs of patients with acute and chronic stroke. We also investigated the relationship between the degree of spasticity as assessed by the MAS and motor neuron pool excitability with by analyzing H-reflex excitability. Sixty adult patients with a first-ever stroke were recruited for this study. MAS scores …

Bradykinin B2 receptor contributes to the exaggerated muscle mechanoreflex in rats with femoral artery occlusion.

Static muscle contraction activates the exercise pressor reflex, which in turn increases sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) and blood pressure (BP). Bradykinin (BK) is considered as a muscle metabolite responsible for modulation of the sympathetic and cardiovascular responses to muscle contraction. Prior studies have suggested that kinin B2 receptor mediates the effects of BK on the reflex SNA and BP responses during stimulation of skeletal muscle afferents. In patients with peripheral artery disease and a rat model with femoral artery ligation, amplified SNA and BP responses to static exercise …

Adult-onset epilepsy with startle-induced seizure after febrile infection-related epilepsy syndrome: A case report.

Startle-induced seizure is a rare type of reflex seizure triggered by unexpected sensory stimuli that often occurs in children with early acquired cerebral lesions or brain malformations. We report a unique case of adult-onset epilepsy with startle-induced seizures. A 24-year-old woman had suffered high fever and focal to bilateral tonic-clonic seizures. A diagnosis of febrile infection-related epilepsy syndrome (FIRES) was made based on the febrile infection occurring 7 days to 24 h before the onset of status epilepticus, which met all criteria for cryptogenic new-onset refractory status epil…
