The price of survival: comparative adaptation to high altitudes between yaks and cattle.

The yak (Bos grunniens) serves as an exceptional model for studying high-altitude adaptation mechanisms due to its evolutionary success in the hypoxic environment of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Previous research has largely focused on genetic and physiological traits of yaks; however, the interactions between rumen microbiota and host physiology under hypoxic conditions are poorly understood. As the largest digestive organ in ruminants, the rumen and its microbiota play a central role in digestion and host nutrition. In this study, a comparative analysis of digestive metabolism and rumen microb…

Deconstructing the heterogeneity of adolescent social anxiety: A cognitive diagnostic approach from a sex perspective.

BACKGROUND: The cognitive vulnerability patterns of adolescent social anxiety are highly sex-specific. However, traditional data-driven subtyping approaches often overlook these sex-specific patterns due to a lack of direct theoretical mapping. This study introduces Cognitive Diagnosis Models (CDMs) to identify sex-specific cognitive subtypes, exploring how these cognitive patterns manifest within high-risk comorbid contexts. METHODS: A sample of 2005 Chinese adolescents (Mage = 12.9 years; 54.5% male) was assessed on four core cognitive attributes: post-event rumination, negative social inte

Anxiety-related attentional characteristics and their relation to freezing of gait in people with Parkinson's: Cross-validation of the Adapted Gait Specific Attentional Profile (G-SAP).

BackgroundAnxiety often exacerbates freezing of gait (FOG) in people with Parkinson's (PwP). Anxiety-related attentional processes and associated processing inefficiencies, like conscious movement processing (CMP) and ruminations, can substantially impact movement control. However, their impact on FOG remains largely unexplored.ObjectiveTo validate an adapted 10-item (1-5 Likert scale) Gait-Specific Attentional Profile (G-SAP) in PwP and assess if adapted G-SAP-subscales (Physiological Arousal, CMP, Rumination, and Processing Inefficiencies) are associated with self-reported FOG frequency.Meth

Daily stress and worry are additional triggers of symptom fluctuations in individuals living with Long COVID: results from an intensive longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Recent research has shown that exertion in physical, cognitive, social, and self-care activities triggers symptom severity in individuals with Long COVID. PURPOSE: The current study aimed to investigate whether daily emotional exertions (stress, worry, rumination) were associated with symptom exacerbation, over and above influences of effortful daily activities, in individuals with Long COVID. METHODS: In total, 376 participants were recruited from UK Long COVID clinics and community settings and completed daily assessments of activity and severity of 8 core symptoms every 3 hour

The in vitro rumen exsheathment test for studying the effect of plant extracts on the exsheathment of Haemonchus contortus infective larvae.

This study applied the in vitro rumen exsheathment test (IVRET) to evaluate the exsheathment kinetics of Haemonchus contortus infective larvae (L3) incubated in ruminal liquor (RL) containing acetone:water extracts of Acacia pennatula (AP), Gymnopodium floribundum (GF), Havardia albicans (HA) or Lysiloma latisiliquum (LL). The role of polyphenols in the biological activity of the evaluated extracts was also determined. Larvae were incubated in RL either alone or added with a different plant extract (AP, GF, HA, or LL) at 1200 μg/mL. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) was added to block polyphenols in e

State and trait cognitions differentially affect cyclicity of mood and cortisol in individuals with and without premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is characterized by a cyclical symptom course. Previous research provides limited findings on possible menstrual-cycle-related psychological and psychoendocrinological processes in PMDD. By using ambulatory assessment (AA), we aimed to compare mood and cortisol cyclicity in individuals with PMDD and healthy controls (HC), and to assess effects of habitual and momentary repetitive negative thinking (RNT) and present moment awareness (PMA) on mood and cortisol across the cycle in both groups. Individuals with PMDD and HC (n = 60 each) completed baseline que

Mediators of a Mindfulness-Based Intervention for Younger Breast Cancer Survivors: Effects on Depressive Symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Depression is associated with poor outcomes in breast cancer patients, with higher prevalence among younger women. Although mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have demonstrated therapeutic effects, the mechanisms of intervention effects are poorly understood. We investigated whether rumination, self-kindness, intrusive thoughts about cancer, cancer-related worry, or a sense of meaning and peace mediated the intervention effects of an MBI, Mindful Awareness Practices (MAPs), on depressive symptoms. Additionally, we explored the same variables as mediators of a psychoeducation pro

Rumen fermentation and microbial diversity of sheep fed a high-concentrate diet supplemented with hydroethanolic extract of walnut green husks.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the impact of a hydroethanolic extract of walnut green husks (WGH) on rumen fermentation and the diversity of bacteria, methanogenic archaea, and fungi in sheep fed a high-concentrate diet. METHODS: Five healthy small-tailed Han ewes with permanent rumen fistula were selected and housed in individual pens. This study adopted a self-controlled and crossover design with a control period and an experimental period. During the control period, the animals were fed a basal diet (with a ratio of concentrate to roughage of 65:35), while during the treatment perio

Three-dimensional characteristic of fungiform papillae and its taste buds in European bison (Bison bonasus), cattle (Bos taurus), and Bison bonasus hybrid.

BACKGROUND: Our recent macro- and scanning electron microscopic study of tongue conducted on domesticated cattle, wild living European bison, and Bison bonasus hybrid revealed various spatial arrangement and number of gustatory and mechanical papillae between parental species and their hybrid. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy analysis of gustatory papillae indicated the variable distribution of fungiform papillae (Fu) over the surface of the tongue, which could be significant in differentiated taste perception during feeding in studied wild living and domesticated husbandry ruminants.…

Metacognition, perseverative thinking, and pain catastrophizing: A moderated-mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pain catastrophizing is linked to a range of negative health and treatment outcomes, although debate continues about how best to define and treat it, since most interventions produce only modest benefit. This study aimed to contribute to theory-driven development of these treatments by exploring the role of perseverative thinking in pain catastrophizing, along with the higher order beliefs, called metacognitions that might shape it. METHODS: An Internet sample of 510 people with chronic pain (≥3 months), who mostly (54.9%) had clinical levels of catastrophizing, completed self-rep

The re-emerging of orf virus infection: A call for surveillance, vaccination and effective control measures.

Orf disease is known to be enzootic among small ruminants in Asia, Africa, and some other parts of the world. The disease caused by orf virus is highly contagious among small ruminant species. Unfortunately, it has been neglected for decades because of the general belief that it only causes a self-limiting disease. On the other hand, in the past it has been reported to cause huge cumulative financial losses in livestock farming. Orf disease is characterized by localized proliferative and persistent skin nodule lesions that can be classified into three forms: generalized, labial and mammary or …

Effect of cereal straw and alfalfa hay diet on amino acid profile of gastrointestinal digesta in lactating dairy cows.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of replacing alfalfa hay with rice straw (RS) or corn stover (CS) on amino acid (AA) profiles of gastrointestinal digesta in lactating cows. Eighteen lactating dairy cows were randomly assigned to one of three groups (n = 6) and fed identical concentrate and corn silage with different forages on dry matter basis: (i) 23% alfalfa hay and 7% Chinese wild rye hay (AH); (ii) 30% CS; and (iii) 30% RS. After the 14-week feeding, a total of 18 cows were slaughtered to collect digesta from four representative organs, including rumen, omasum, duodenum an

The dynamics of mood and coping in bipolar disorder: longitudinal investigations of the inter-relationship between affect, self-esteem and response styles.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has suggested that the way bipolar patients respond to depressive mood impacts on the future course of the illness, with rumination prolonging depression and risk-taking possibly triggering hypomania. However, the relationship over time between variables such as mood, self-esteem, and response style to negative affect is complex and has not been directly examined in any previous study--an important limitation, which the present study seeks to address. METHODS: In order to maximize ecological validity, individuals diagnosed with bipolar disorder (N = 48) reported

Minimum versus optimum concentrations of fiber in dairy cow diets based on barley silage and concentrates of barley or corn.

Six primiparous and 6 multiparous lactating Holstein cows were used in a double d6 x 6 Latin square to determine the effects of the percentage of forage fiber in diets containing concentrates based on barley or corn. Cows received one of six diets that provided three percentages of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) from barley silage [19.5, 25.0, and 40.9% of dry matter intake (DMI)] combined with concentrates based on either barley or corn. The DMI (18.6 vs. 18.3 kg/d) and net energy for lactation (27.2 vs. 26.8 Mcal/d) were similar for cows fed barley and corn diets, respectively. Consequently,

A review of the use of B. melitensis Rev 1 vaccine in adult sheep and goats.

The live Brucella melitensis Rev 1 strain is considered the best vaccine available for the prophylaxis of brucellosis in small ruminants. The classically recommended exclusive vaccination of young replacement animals has failed to control brucellosis in some developed countries and is frequently inapplicable in the developing world. Accordingly, whole-flock vaccination is the only feasible alternative to control B. melitensis infection in small ruminants under the extensive management conditions characteristic of these countries. This review describes the practical problems encountered and the…
