Self-administered acupressure for knee osteoarthritis in middle-aged and older adults: a pilot randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: To test the acceptability and feasibility of self-administered acupressure as an intervention for knee pain among middle-aged and older adults with knee osteoarthritis (KOA). METHODS: In this pilot randomized controlled trial, 35 participants with KOA were randomized to receive self-administered acupressure (n = 17, two self-administered acupressure training sessions followed by self-practice for 6 weeks) or knee health education (n = 18, two health education sessions about KOA management followed by self-care for 6 weeks). Current pain intensity (primary outcome) was measured usin

Risk and Protective Factors for Self-Harm in a Population-Based Sample of Transgender Youth.

This study sought to identify factors distinguishing transgender/gender non-conforming (GNC) adolescents across three groups: no self-harm, non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) only, and NSSI and suicide attempt (NSSI + SA). Data were from the 2016 Minnesota Student Survey. The final analytic sample included 1,635 transgender/GNC students in grades 9 and 11. Logistic regression analyses determined factors that best distinguished transgender/GNC students who reported self-harm (NSSI only or NSSI + SA) from those who reported no self-harm, and transgender/GNC adolescents who reported NSSI + SA from t

The sigma-receptor antagonist BD-1063 decreases ethanol intake and reinforcement in animal models of excessive drinking.

Sigma-Receptors (SigRs) have been implicated in behavioral and appetitive effects of psychostimulants and may also modulate the motivating properties of ethanol. This study tested the hypothesis that SigRs modulate ethanol reinforcement and contribute to excessive ethanol intake. The effects of subcutaneous treatment with the potent, selective Sig-1R antagonist BD-1063 on operant ethanol self-administration were studied in two models of excessive drinking-Sardinian alcohol-preferring (sP) rats and acutely withdrawn ethanol-dependent Wistar rats-and compared to ethanol self-administration in no

Human papillomavirus detection in self-collected vaginal specimens and matched clinician-collected cervical specimens.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) detection is an integral part of cervical cancer screening, and a range of specimen collection procedures are being tested. Preliminary studies have found that the majority of women prefer self-collection of vaginal specimens instead of clinician-collected specimens of the cervix. The purposes of the current study were to explore the social and behavioral predictors of acceptance of self-collection of vaginal specimens among patients and to assess concordance in detection of HPV between clinician-collected cervical specimens and self-collected vaginal specimens. The reliability and validity of self-reported temporomandibular disorder pain in adolescents.

AIMS: To evaluate the reliability and validity of self-reported pain associated with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in adolescents and to determine how this validity may change over time. The authors' hypothesis was that self-reported pain can be used to reliably and accurately detect adolescents with TMD pain. METHODS: One hundred twenty adolescents, 60 with self-reported TMD pain and 60 age- and gender-matched controls without TMD pain, were examined twice. At the first examination at a Public Dental Service clinic, self-reported TMD pain was recorded for each patient. At the second exam

[Development of a "self efficacy for health promotion scale" in community-dwelling elderly].

The purpose of this study is to develop a Japanese version of a self efficacy scale for health promotion activities by the elderly. In September to October 1997, we asked all of 1758 persons aged 65 and over who were living in a village in Nagano Prefecture to answer a questionnaire. The questionnaire included 15 self efficacy items for health promotion, Activities of Daily Living (ADL), general self efficacy, health behavior, and community activities. The present study examined reliability and validity of the scale by investigating the correlation to other factors. 1173 of the subjects comple

The "Perfect Trip" on social media: strategic self-presentation in travel sharing, posting anxiety, and retrospective trip satisfaction with social comparison orientation as a moderator.

BACKGROUND: Rooted in social psychological theories of self-presentation and social comparison, this study asks whether impression management in social media travel sharing is associated with affective costs that may relate to how people evaluate an otherwise positive life episode. METHODS: Adults who had completed a leisure trip within the past three months and had posted travel-related content at least once completed an anonymous online survey (N = 465). Strategic self-presentation in travel sharing, social media posting anxiety, social comparison orientation, and trip satisfaction were mea

How positive psychological capital is associated with academic resilience: investigating the sequential mediating effects of academic and coping self-efficacy among undergraduates.

BACKGROUND: Undergraduate students frequently experience persistent academic pressure and uncertainty, making academic resilience a critical protective factor for mental health issues. Building on positive psychology, this study examined whether psychological capital (PsyCap) enhances academic resilience directly and indirectly through a sequential process involving academic self-efficacy and coping self-efficacy. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey design was used with undergraduate participants from a Chinese university. Validated scales were used to measure PsyCap, academic self-efficacy, co

Keep your participants close, but your informants closer? The added value of high and low contact informants to supplement self-report for the cognitive impairment of schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: The input of an "informant," a person in the participant's life who can evaluate levels of functioning, can supplement potentially unreliable self-reports in schizophrenia. However, this adds to the complexity of clinical trial design. To evaluate the relative utility of information from informants and participants in a clinical trial context, we compared the participant (self-report), informant, and interviewer ratings for the Schizophrenia Cognition Rating Scale (SCoRS). METHODS: We compared the participant (self-report), informant, and interviewer ratings using paired t-tests,

Mental health and self-compassion in military couples during wartime.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the mental health and resilience of combatants and their partners during the 2023 Israel-Hamas war, with a focus on self-compassion as a protective factor. While soldiers' mental health has been widely studied, the psychological burden on their partners, especially during active conflict, is less understood. The transition of reservists from civilian to combat roles, coupled with the upheaval faced by their families, provides a unique opportunity to assess resilience in this dyadic context. METHOD: A total of 134 couples (N = 268), combatants serving in Gaza and

Latent Profile Analysis of Prenatal Self-Management Among High-Risk Pregnant Women and Its Association With Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: High-risk pregnancy requires effective self-management strategies to prevent adverse outcomes. Understanding the heterogeneity in pregnant women's self-management behaviors through latent profile analysis (LPA) may inform targeted interventions. AIM: We sought to identify latent profiles of self-management behaviors among women with high-risk pregnancies and examine their associations with adverse pregnancy outcomes. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among high-risk pregnant women recruited from 2 tertiary maternal and child health hospitals in Heilongjiang, China. A

Trust and self-efficacy in reporting child sexual abuse to law enforcement: Evidence from Germany.

BACKGROUND: Reporting suspected child sexual abuse (CSA) to law enforcement (LE) is a complex process for professionals working with children. Existing research indicates that both individual (e.g., self-efficacy) and institutional factors (e.g., trust in and collaboration with authorities) influence reporting behaviour, but their specific roles in this context remain underexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates how CSA-specific self-efficacy and trust in LE predict German professionals' attitudes toward reporting suspected CSA, how these concepts interdepend and whether these relationsh

Biased self-body processing in bulimia nervosa: Combining eye tracking and event-related potentials.

Bulimia nervosa (BN) has been linked to biases in self-body processing. Due to the particular importance of attentional biases, the aim of the current study was to further investigate their robustness in a large sample of females with BN or subthreshold BN (BN group) and a control group with low body dissatisfaction (LBD group) and comparable age and body mass index. Using a combined eye-tracking and electroencephalogram paradigm, we assessed overt attention orienting while viewing images of the self-body and neurophysiological correlates of attentional, emotional, and motivational processes w

From inner care to healthy living: Cross-sectional evidence that self-compassion fulfills basic psychological needs and relates to lower insomnia and loneliness.

BACKGROUND: Self-compassion has emerged as a protective psychological factor that supports mental health and adaptive lifestyle behaviours. Recent research suggests that the fulfilment of basic psychological needs-autonomy, competence, and relatedness-may mediate the effects of self-compassion on behavioural health outcomes such as sleep and social connectedness. PURPOSE: This study examined whether basic psychological needs mediate the associations between self-compassion and two lifestyle-related outcomes: insomnia and loneliness, among Japanese adults. METHODS: A cross-sectional online su

Virtually Connected: Do Shared Novel Activities in Virtual Reality Enhance Self-Expansion and Relationship Quality?

According to self-expansion theory, sharing novel experiences with a romantic partner can help prevent boredom and maintain relationship quality. However, in today's globalized modern world, partners spend less time together and are more likely to live apart than in previous generations, limiting opportunities for shared novel experiences. In two in-lab experiments, we tested whether shared novel activities in virtual reality (VR) could facilitate self-expansion, reduce boredom, and enhance relationship quality. In Study 1, couples (N = 183) engaged in a shared novel and exciting activity in e

The Moderating Role of Online Awareness in the Association between Strategy Use and Performance Accuracy on a Test of Functional Cognition in Individuals with Acquired Brain Injury.

OBJECTIVE: Deficits in online self-awareness (SA) are common after acquired brain injury (ABI), leading to safety concerns and impacting daily activities and rehabilitation outcomes. Early identification is recommended as a critical first step in cognitive rehabilitation following ABI. The aim of this observational study was to examine differences in online SA and strategy use between individuals with ABI and healthy controls. It also investigated whether online SA moderates the relationship between strategy use and performance accuracy on a test designed to assess cognitive-functional deficit
