The ethno-racial patterning of depression and loneliness: new evidence from a diverse cohort of U.S. midlife adults.

OBJECTIVES: Mental health is a central concern for aging and well-being over the life course. This study examined ethno-racial patterns of depressive symptoms and loneliness among a diverse cohort of U.S. midlife adults to illuminate why some individuals age more successfully than others. Drawing on the Stress Process Model, we investigated whether these patterns persist after accounting for socioeconomic and relational stressors and social support resources. METHODS: We used new Wave VI data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health). Descriptive statisti

The lived complexity of phantom limb telescoping: insights from a qualitative study.

Phantom limb telescoping, the perceived shortening of a missing limb, remains an underexplored phenomenon despite its relatively frequent occurrence after limb loss. Existing literature has focused on quantitative or neurophysiological approaches, with limited attention to lived experience. This study examined first-person accounts of telescoping among 12 participants with limb loss (11 men, one woman; mean age 50.1 years; mean 3.9 years post-amputation) using semi-structured interviews. The aim was to explore the lived experience of phantom limb telescoping among people who have undergone lim

Beyond seeking information: Lessons learned from a qualitative investigation of the information practices of parents about COVID-19 vaccination in Canada.

Recent reports indicate a concerning decline in routine childhood vaccination rates globally. Parental engagement with health information is critical in shaping vaccine acceptance amid rising skepticism and shifting sociopolitical dynamics. In this study, we investigated how Canadian parents engaged with information to decide on COVID-19 vaccination for their children. Using an exploratory qualitative design, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 48 parents between April and August 2022. Data were analyzed thematically and organized around McKenzie's model of information practices. Our

Childhood obesity in changing food systems: mediterranean diet, socioeconomic inequalities and AI-driven personalized nutrition - the case of Italy.

Childhood obesity is a major global public health challenge resulting from the interaction between changing food systems, dietary behaviors, and social inequalities. This Perspective argues that childhood obesity should be addressed through an integrated systems-based framework that links food environments, socioeconomic determinants, and emerging digital health technologies. Across Europe, children's dietary patterns have shifted toward increased consumption of ultra-processed foods and energy-dense products, alongside low adherence to healthy dietary guidelines. These trends disproportionate

Neurodiversity and workplace relationships: The impact of ADHD on social network ties.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects a significant portion of the adult population and can impact social functioning and workplace relationships. However, current social network theories often rely on assumptions of neurotypical functioning, overlooking how ADHD may reshape relational dynamics in ways that challenge deficit-only models. This study examines the impact of ADHD symptomology, specifically the hyperactive/impulsive (ADHD/H) and inattentive (ADHD/I) subtypes, on key workplace social ties: friendship, advice, and conflict. It is hypothesized that ADHD/H will be pos

Limited family ties, friendship, and contextual variation in loneliness risk across 25 countries.

Loneliness is linked to higher mortality and poorer health worldwide. As the global population of individuals who are unpartnered and childless grows, public health concerns about social isolation have risen. Sociological theories distinguish between having fewer ties, being socially isolated, and being lonely while gerontological theories emphasize how aging adults prioritize smaller, high-quality relationships. Yet, norms about family, friendship, and loneliness also differ by country contexts such as culture and development. Therefore, while close non-family ties (e.g., friendship) might re

Women's Strategies for Navigating Disclosure of a History of Sexual Trauma with Current Intimate Partners.

The experience of sexual trauma is common, especially for women. One way to mitigate the adverse social and behavioral health outcomes associated with sexual trauma is through the provision of social support. However, before social support can be provided, there is a need for the survivor to disclose to close others, including romantic partners. This study aimed to understand how women with a history of sexual trauma navigate disclosing these experiences with a current intimate partner. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 41 women with a history of sexual trauma who describ

Linking Women's Empowerment to Mental Health Symptoms: Population-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: Mental health disorders represent a growing global challenge, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, where women are disproportionately affected by social and structural inequalities. Although women's empowerment has been increasingly recognized as a strategy to improve physical health, its relationship with mental health remains less well understood. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the association between women's empowerment and mental health symptoms among ever-married women in Bangladesh. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data from the 2022 Bang

Perceived control and immersion in AI chatbot interaction: a psychological distance perspective.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigates how perceived control shapes immersion in AI chatbot interaction through psychological distance. Drawing on psychological distance theory, we distinguish perceived interaction control, defined as users' perceived control over conversational flow, from perceived content control, defined as users' perceived control over generated content. We further examine how these two forms of perceived control contribute to reducing temporal, spatial, and social psychological distance in AI chatbot interaction. METHODS: Survey data were collected from 338 AI chatbot use
