Trauma exposure and PTSD are associated with poorer physical health. Psychological and behavioral mechanisms may help account for this relationship. In this study, we tested avoidant coping and alcohol use as mediators of the relationship between trauma exposure, PTSD, and self-reported physical health complaints in female drinkers. In 827 college women, we compared three groups: women with no trauma history, women with a sexual assault but no PTSD, and women with a sexual assault and PTSD, on avoidant coping, alcohol use, and physical health complaints. We found that PTSD was positively assoc

In this paper, an aging baby boomer "tells all" about his personal experience with some of the "pitfalls of organized religion," as observed from his somewhat unusual perspective as a Jew by birth and a Roman Catholic by choice, and a lifelong Asperger's sufferer, the butt of practical jokes in a variety of juvenile and adult settings. His conclusion, echoing H.L. Mencken's famous statement that "the cure for the evils of democracy is more democracy," is that the best antidote to these "pitfalls" may be found simply in the responsible practice of religion, including both Judaism and Christiani

UNLABELLED: PTSD in children and adolescents differs from the adult disease. Therapeutic approaches involve both psychotherapy and psychopharmacotherapy.
OBJECTIVES: The current paper aims at reviewing studies on psychopharmacological treatment of childhood and adolescent PTSD. Additionally, developmental frameworks for PTSD diagnosis and research along with an experimental model of quenching and kindling in the context of stress exposure are presented. We conducted an extensive literature search of reviews on psychopharmacotherapy as well as studies on psychopharmacological treatment for PTS

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular and metabolic disease.
PURPOSE: The purpose of the current review is to evaluate the evidence suggesting that PTSD increases cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors, and to identify possible biomarkers and psychosocial characteristics and behavioral variables that are associated with these outcomes.
METHODS: A systematic literature search in the period of 2002-2009 for PTSD, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic disease was conducted.
RESULTS: The literature search yielded 78 studies on PTSD a

This article explores the nightmares of Cambodian refugees in a cultural context, and the role of nightmares in the trauma ontology of this population, including their role in generating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Among Cambodian refugees attending a psychiatric clinic, we found that having a nightmare was strongly associated with having PTSD (chi(2) = 61.7, P < 0.001, odds ratio = 126); that nightmares caused much distress upon awakening, including panic attacks, fear of bodily dysfunction, flashbacks and difficulty returning to sleep; that nightmare content was frequently related

INTRODUCTION: To predict the occurrence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), using a Support Vector Machine (SVM) on adults in flood district. Diagnostic and Statistical Manuals on Mental Disorders (IV Edition) were used to examine and diagnose the victims in flood districts. Based on the forecasting model of SVM with PTSD as dependent variables and 23 influence factors of PTSD as independent variables, prediction of PTSD was conducted among the victims. After considering 23 influence factors into the prediction model, the agreement rate of prediction of the model was 88.05 percent, with s

This study evaluated child Holocaust survivors with an emphasis on potential protective factors facilitating participants' adaptation to post-Holocaust life. We examined Antonovsky's (1979, 1987) salutogenic paradigm, testing the mediating and moderating effect of participants' sense of coherence (SOC) on the association between early childhood deprivation due to Holocaust persecution and posttraumatic stress later in life. The nonclinical sample, composed of 203 child Holocaust survivors born between 1935 and 1944 completed questionnaires on Holocaust survival exposure, inventories on current

Psychological trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may complicate and reduce the effectiveness of treatment for substance use disorders (SUDs). This study assessed trauma history and symptoms of simple and complex PTSD at baseline in a randomized trial of contingency management (CM) compared to standard treatment (ST) with 142 cocaine- or heroin-dependent outpatients. History of exposure to each of eight types of psychological trauma was unrelated to treatment outcome, except for witnessed assaults and emotional abuse. Complex PTSD symptoms were inversely associated with short-term

OBJECTIVES: This prospective study examined the role of pretraumatic personality factors, coping style, proximity to a terrorist attack, and its perceived threat to the survivors in the prediction of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after a suicide bomber's attack on a bus.
METHOD: The study sample consisted of 180 undergraduate students who were coincidentally evaluated 2 weeks before a terrorist explosion in a bus heading toward their university and reevaluated 1 week, 1 month, and 6 months after the explosion.
RESULTS: A hierarchal regression model revealed that increased risk for PTS

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PSTD), classified as an anxiety disorder, has become increasingly important because of wars overseas, natural disasters, and domestic violence. After trauma exposes the victim to actual or threatened death or serious injury, 3 dimensions of PTSD unfold: (1) reexperiencing the event with distressing recollections, dreams, flashbacks, and/or psychologic and physical distress; (2) persistent avoidance of stimuli that might invite memories or experiences of the trauma; and (3) increased arousal. Traumatic events sufficient to produce PTSD in susceptible subjects may

This article examines the association between self-reported prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and health status in a sample of 2425 male Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) ambulatory care patients who participated in the Veterans Health Study. Participants were recruited at 1 of 4 VA outpatient clinics in the Boston area. They completed self-report measures of PTSD (using the PTSD Checklist and measures of exposure to traumatic events), depression (using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies--Depression scale), and health status (using the Short-Form-36) and a medical history

In the current study, the authors examined the effects of systematically varying the writing instructions for the written emotional disclosure procedure. College undergraduates with a trauma history and at least moderate posttraumatic stress symptoms were asked to write about (a) the same traumatic experience, (b) different traumatic experiences, or (c) nontraumatic everyday events across 3 written disclosure sessions. Results show that participants who wrote about the same traumatic experience reported significant reductions in psychological and physical symptoms at follow-up assessments comp

Whether eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) causes reactivation of epilepsy is as yet unclear. A 34-year-old woman was treated in an inpatient multimodal psychotherapeutic setting with EMDR for PTSD resulting from sexual harassment and for a moderate depressive episode. She had been diagnosed with idiopathic generalized absence epilepsy in childhood, but had experienced no seizures under lamotrigine medication since 1999. After the second EMDR session, clinical seizures in the form of absences occurred, and were validated by el

OBJECTIVE: This report examined gender differences in the clinical manifestations of current posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in treatment-seeking patients.
METHOD: Outpatients with PTSD (N=138) were interviewed with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV.
RESULTS: Compared with male patients, female patients experienced more reexperiencing symptoms and were more likely to meet criteria for current PTSD and to report sexual trauma as their index trauma. Men with PTSD were more likely than women with PTSD to meet criteria for a substance use disorder and for antisocial personality d

Affect dysregulation is pervasive among women with histories of childhood sexual abuse. It is an important aspect of the clinical presentation of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a disorder that frequently characterizes survivors of childhood abuse. Based on distinctions between approach and avoidance orientations to coping, there is controversy regarding whether initial treatment for trauma survivors should employ an exposure-based approach to increase affect or an affect-management approach to reduce it. In this article, we review theoretical and empirical literature regarding affect dy

OBJECTIVE: Traumatic events can result in a set of symptoms including nightmares, recurrent and intrusive recollections, avoidance of thoughts or activities associated with the traumatic event, and symptoms of increased arousal such as insomnia and hypervigilance. These posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-like symptoms are frequently observed in persons with chronic pain syndromes. Little is known about how these two phenomena interact with one another. The present study evaluated PTSD-like symptoms in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) and examined the relation between PTSD-like sympt

In 31 patients after a craniocerebral trauma combined with a trauma of locomotor system (CCCT), and in 28 patients with only a limb fractures a time course (1, 3, 7, and 14 days) of biochemical stress reaction inductors (cortisol, serotonin, histamine, lipid peroxidation products) in various tactics of surgical treatment was studied. It was established that CCCT in a significantly stronger degree increases cortisol and lipid peroxidation products' levels than an isolated locomotor system trauma. An early postponed surgical intervention in lower extremities in CCCT results in the same increase

The symptom overlap between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other pharmacotherapy-responsive disorders suggests that pharmacotherapy might be effective. Nevertheless, of the eight published placebo-controlled trials investigating the pharmacotherapy of PTSD, only four found statistically significant efficacy for the treatment being studied. This literature possesses a number of methodologic limitations, including the fact that most studies have been conducted with war veterans, who may constitute a more treatment-refractory population. Several open trials and one controlled trial with
