People living with HIV (PLWH) have extensive interpersonal trauma histories and higher rates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) than the general population. Prolonged exposure (PE) therapy is efficacious in reducing PTSD across a variety of trauma samples; however, research has not examined factors that influence how PTSD symptoms change during PE for PLWH. Using multi-level modeling, we examined the potential moderating effect of number of previous trauma types experienced, whether the index trauma was HIV-related or not, and years since HIV diagnosis on PTSD symptom reduction during a 1

BACKGROUND: Rats exposed to chronic predator scent stress mimic the phenotype of complex post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in humans, including altered adrenal morphology and function. High- and low-anxiety phenotypes have been described in rats exposed to predator scent stress (PSS). This study aimed to determine whether these high- and low-anxiety phenotypes correlate with changes in adrenal histomorphology and corticosteroid production.
METHODS: Rats were exposed to PSS for ten days. Thirty days later, the rats' anxiety index (AI) was assessed with an elevated plus-maze test. Based on

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) who experience additional traumas or stressful life events may undergo symptomatic worsening, but no data exist on whether exposure to the COVID-19 pandemic in a high infection area worsens mental health among older adults with chronic PTSD.
METHODS: Seventy-six older adults (N = 46 with PTSD and N = 30 trauma-exposed comparison subjects [TE]) for whom prepandemic data were available were interviewed between April 1 and May 8, 2020 to quantify depressive (Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression [HRSD]) and PTSD symptom (Post-traum

BACKGROUND: Chronic stress exposure is a risk factor for several psychiatric disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depression (MDD), with the prefrontal cortex (PFC) playing a key role in mediating this stress susceptibility. However, most individuals who are exposed to chronic stress are resilient and do not develop psychopathology. Recent evidence suggests that glial cells, especially astrocytes, play an important role in controlling stress-induced anxiety- and depression-like behavior, yet their role in contributing to stress resilience is not understood.

BACKGROUND: Considerable research has been devoted to examining the mental health conditions of patients with COVID-19 and medical staff attending to these patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there are few insights concerning how the pandemic may take a toll on the mental health of the general population, and especially of nonpatients (ie, individuals who have not contracted COVID-19).
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the association between social media use and mental health conditions in the general population based on a national representative sample during the peak o

Chronic stress is associated with increased anxiety, cognitive deficits, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Repeated social defeat (RSD) in mice causes long-term stress-sensitization associated with increased microglia activation, monocyte accumulation, and enhanced interleukin (IL)-1 signaling in endothelia and neurons. With stress-sensitization, mice have amplified neuronal, immune, and behavioral responses to acute stress 24 days later. This is clinically relevant as it shares key aspects with post-traumatic stress disorder. The mechanisms underlying stress-sensitization are unclear, but e

Developmental regression (DR) is a clinically relevant phenomenon that is most recognized in neurodevelopmental disorders such as in autism spectrum disorder, but it is also described in association with psychological trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in children. It is not uncommon for children with PTSD to present symptoms of DR, which manifests as a loss of recently acquired developmental skills such as toilet training or language skills. International diagnostic classifications are not consistent regarding DR nosology. There exists, however, some theoretical ground to group

Background: Although digital technology enables people to stay connected during COVID-19, protracted periods of isolation, crisis-induced stress, and technology-based activity may intensify problem technology use (PTU), such as social media addiction (SMA) and Internet gaming disorder (IGD). Objective: This study aimed to characterize the patterns and levels of SMA and IGD during COVID-19 in the general population of Hong Kong. We also tested the associations between prolonged use of social media/Internet games and SMA/IGD and the mediation effects of psychosocial statuses (i.e., loneliness, b

Due to their multiple minoritized identities, Latinx sexual- and gender-minority immigrants risk exposure to various forms of traumatic stressors at home and abroad that can result in post-traumatic stress disorder and other comorbid problems like depression. A much-needed review and synthesis of the latest research highlights important factors for practitioners and scholars to consider relevant to this vulnerable and under researched population. A data-driven conceptualization helps identify risk factors across different points in time such as violence and discrimination from communal and ins

BACKGROUND: The decline in the mental well-being of young adults following an episode of venous thromboembolism may be related to the uncertainty of long-term health and fear of recurrence. In recent years, post-pulmonary embolism syndrome has gained acceptance, however, less attention has been given to the psychological impact on young patients after venous thromboembolism. This study explores the prevalence, type, and severity of psychological disorders of patients following venous thromboembolism.
METHODS: A retrospective observational cohort study was performed of over 18-year-old patient

The impact of the promoter polymorphisms of the serotonin transporter (5-HTTLPR) on mood has been studied by two-way interaction models comprising one environmental factor and genotype variants. However, childhood abuse is assumed to be associated with different psychobiological long-term effects than adult traumatic events. Both types of trauma may interact on an individual basis throughout the lifespan moderating the impact of the 5-HTTLPR s allele on depressive disorders. Therefore, the hypothesis of a three-way interaction among the 5-HTTLPR, childhood abuse and adult traumatic experience

This cross-sectional study aimed to address whether occupational stressors are associated with adverse mental health outcomes in first responders via lower social support. A total of 895 first responders including emergency medical technicians, paramedics, and firefighters from 50 US States and the Virgin Islands (mean = 37.32, standard deviation = 12.09, 59.2% male, and 91.3% White) completed an online survey. Bivariate analyses indicated that occupational stressors were positively correlated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depression (MD), and generalized anxiety disorder (G

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorders (EDs) and insomnia are prevalent among veterans. However, little is known about how ED and insomnia symptoms interact to maintain one, particularly in this population. We assessed associations between insomnia and ED symptoms (binge eating and restricting) for 6 months following military service separation. We hypothesised that: (a) greater insomnia symptoms would be associated concurrently with greater binge-eating/restricting symptoms across a 6-month period, and (b) the strength of the association between insomnia and binge-eating/restricting symptoms would be gr

The COVID-19 pandemic was an event involving an actual threat of death, serious injury, or harm to the integrity of self or others, which could have served as a precipitant for unmasking symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Persons living with HIV and those with hepatitis C (HCV) coinfection could be at increased risk of PTSD symptoms after a traumatic event, given their lifetime experiences of trauma, stigma, poverty, mental health conditions, and substance use. We measured PTSD symptoms at three time points during the COVID-19 pandemic using a 17-item questionnaire in two estab

Post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSSs) are associated with an imbalanced time perspective (TP) as well as with unhealthy substance use. Although neurodevelopmental processes during adolescence may impact PTSS, most etiological models of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are derived from studies with adults and neglect possible distinctive characteristics in adolescent PTSD. This study examined possible direct and mediated relations between exposure to potentially traumatic experiences (EPTEs) and PTSS with TP as a potential mediator. In addition, the study investigated the direct and indir

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) triggers a chain reaction of intricate metabolic abnormalities, sometimes leading to ongoing cognitive deficits. These abnormalities comprise dysregulation in trace element homeostasis, disrupted neurotransmitter modulation, increased lipid peroxidation, compromised glucose metabolism, and organ-specific metabolic changes. Most recent studies suggest that metabolic abnormalities are the root cause of cognitive decline in post-traumatic stress disorder. Restoring metabolic balance through therapeutic modalities, such as antioxidant therapy to combat lipid peroxidati

OBJECTIVES: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized by recurrent episodes of severe anxiety after exposure to traumatic events. It is believed that these episodes are triggered at least in part by environmental stimuli associated with the precipitating trauma through classical conditioning, termed conditioned fear. However, traditional methods of conditioned fear memory extinction are frequently ineffective for PTSD treatment due to the contribution of non-associative sensitization caused by trauma. Anesthetics have shown promise for treating various psychiatric diseases such as

There is an increasing need to deliver effective mental health services to refugee children and adolescents across the United States; however, the evidence base needed to guide the design and delivery of services is nascent. We investigated the trauma history profiles, psychopathology, and associated behavioral and functional indicators among war-affected refugee children presenting for psychological treatment. From the National Child Traumatic Stress Network's Core Data Set, 60 war-affected refugee children were identified (51.7% males, mean age = 13.1 years, SD = 4.13). Clinical assessments

Following exposure to trauma, avoidance behavior can be protective but also contribute to severe symptoms and interfere with exposure-based therapy. Extinction of fear conditioning by exposure to the same environment or environmental cues that were present during the initial traumatic event but without including the aversive stimulus or stimuli is often used to study post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a condition characterized by an inability to suppress conditioned fear responses. A limitation of this paradigm is that one cannot avoid the context or cues associated with the initial trauma
