Surface Modification with Chemically Modified Synovial Fluid for Flexor Tendon Reconstruction in a Canine Model in Vivo.

BACKGROUND: Functional restoration is the major concern after flexor tendon reconstruction in the hand. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of modifying the surface of extrasynovial tendon autografts with carbodiimide-derivatized synovial fluid with gelatin (cd-SF-G) on functional outcomes of flexor tendon reconstruction using a canine model. METHODS: The second and fifth flexor digitorum profundus tendons from eleven dogs were transected and repaired in zone II. The dogs then had six weeks of free activity leading to tendon rupture and scar formation (the repair-f…

Intra-articular fibroma of tendon sheath in a knee joint associated with iliotibial band friction syndrome.

Iliotibial band (ITB) friction syndrome is a common overuse injury typically seen in the active athlete population. A nodular lesion on the inner side of the ITB as an etiology or an accompanying lesion from friction syndrome has been rarely reported. A 45-year-old male presented with recurrent pain and a movable nodule at the lateral joint area, diagnosed as ITB friction syndrome. The nodule was confirmed as a rare intra-articular fibroma of the tendon sheath (FTS) on the basis of histopathologic findings. We describe the MRI findings, arthroscopic and pathologic features, in this case of int

Missed Medial Malleolar Fracture Associated With Achilles Tendon Rupture: A Case Report and Literature Review.

A 45-year-old man sustained an Achilles tendon rupture while playing futsal. A concomitant medial malleolar fracture was not diagnosed until the patient underwent an operation for Achilles tendon repair. A routine postoperative radiograph showed a minimally displaced medial malleolar fracture. Conservative treatment was chosen for the fracture. The function of the Achilles tendon recovered well, and the fracture was united. A medial malleolar fracture can be missed when an Achilles tendon rupture occurs simultaneously. Thus, surgeons should consider the possibility of medial malleolar fracture

Variations in jump height explain the between-sex difference in patellar tendon loading during landing.

Patellar tendinopathy is the most common overuse knee injury in volleyball, with men reporting more than twice the injury prevalence than women. Although high patellar tendon loading is thought to be a causative factor of patellar tendinopathy, it is unknown whether between-sex variations in landing technique account for differences in patellar tendon loading. It was hypothesized that male volleyball players would display differences in landing technique and would generate higher patellar tendon loading than their female counterparts. The landing technique and patellar tendon loading of 20 mal

Passive skeletal muscle excursion after tendon rupture correlates with increased collagen content in muscle.

PURPOSE: This study was designed to measure time-dependent changes in muscle excursion and collagen content after tenotomy, and to analyze the correlation between muscle excursion and collagen content in a rabbit model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four rabbits underwent tenotomy of the second extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles on the right legs and were randomly assigned to three groups based on the period of time after tenotomy (2, 4, and 6 weeks). The second EDL muscles on left legs were used as controls. At each time after tenotomy, passive muscle excursion and collagen content, det

Quadriceps tendon rupture in maintenance haemodialysis patients: results of surgical treatment and analysis of risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Reports of spontaneous quadriceps ruptures in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients are scarce, and the assessment of risk factors for tendon rupture is poorly addressed in the majority of the studies. The purpose of the present study is to report a series of patients on haemodialysis with spontaneous quadriceps tendon ruptures operated at our institution. The results of the surgical treatment are described and the potential risk factors associated with the rupture are analyzed. METHODS: Our study consisted of retrospective analysis of patient's charts. Clinical and laboratory f

Radioulnar space available at the level of the biceps tuberosity for repaired biceps tendon: a comparison of 4 techniques.

HYPOTHESIS: It is unknown whether certain methods of distal biceps tendon repair lead to an increased propensity of impingement of the repaired tendon. The purpose of this study was to evaluate various repair techniques in a cadaveric model to determine the radioulnar space available for the repaired biceps tendons. METHODS: Nine matched pairs of quartered, fresh-frozen cadaveric arms were transected at the level of the humeral mid shaft and the distal radiocarpal joint. Distance measurements and the angular relation of the bicipital tuberosity were measured at 5 forearm pronation-supination …

The prevalence of the extensor digitorum communis tendon and its insertion variants: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

The tendons of the Extensor Digitorum Communis (EDC) are frequently injured in hand trauma. Dislocation and spontaneous rupture can also occur during the course of wrist osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The EDC exhibits many variations including splitting of its individual slips to the medial four fingers or their absence. The aim of this systematic review is to assemble evidence about the prevalence of the EDC and its variants on the dorsum of the hand. Twenty-four cadaveric studies met the inclusion criteria, providing data from a total of 2,005 hands. Meta-analysis yielded the follo…

Irreducible Fracture-Dislocation of the Ankle Associated With Interposition of the Tibialis Posterior Tendon in the Syndesmosis: A Case Report.

Although ankle fracture-dislocations are common orthopedic injuries, it is very uncommon for them to be irreducible, and such cases require special attention. We report the case of a closed fracture-dislocation of the ankle in a 17-year-old male that required 3 surgeries because of persistent anterior subluxation of the talus on the postoperative radiographs. After advanced radiologic investigations, tibialis posterior tendon interposition in the syndesmosis was identified as the cause of the subluxation. This is a very rare event, reported in only 5 patients in published studies. Once the dia

Traumatic dislocation of posterior tibial tendon by avulsion of flexor retinacular release. Reconstruction with suture anchors.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic dislocation of the posterior tibial tendon (PTT) has a very low prevalence. It presents with pain and recurrent snapping on the posterior side of the medial malleolus after an ankle sprain while practicing sports. The diagnosis is based on clinical examination, supported by imaging techniques. The treatment must be always surgical. CASE REPORT: A 28 year old man sprained ankle his ankle while jogging. He was treated in an emergency department with an elastic bandage. Once he recovered, he went back to running, noticing a projection with ankle pain. In the physical exam

Snapping popliteus tendon within an osteochondritis dissecans lesion: an unusual case of lateral knee pain.

The popliteus muscle is an important structure in the posterior knee, coursing from the distal lateral femoral condyle to the posterior tibia, and it initiates knee flexion, protects the lateral meniscus, and resists tibial external rotation. Abnormalities in the lateral femoral condyle may result in impaired tracking of the popliteus tendon over the lateral femoral condyle, causing pain and a snapping sensation. We report a case of a snapping popliteus tendon caused by an osteochondral defect of the lateral femoral condyle. We obtained a thorough medical history, performed a detailed physical

Left shoulder pain in a violinist, related to extensor tendon adhesions in a small scar on the back of the wrist.

A female professional orchestra violin player, age 54, with an 8-year history of severe left shoulder problems, presented with reproducible, acute, incapacitating left shoulder pain when playing the lowest violin string. This complaint was found caused by compensatory left arm positions for unnoticed finger extensor excursion limitations in a well-healed scar bed from two dorsal wrist ganglion operations 11 and 13 years before. Immediately after extensor tendon mobilization in the scar bed, the patient could assume a normal playing position, which was pain free, and could return to orchestral
