Open angle glaucoma effects on preattentive visual search efficiency for flicker, motion displacement and orientation pop-out tasks.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Preattentive visual search (PAVS) describes rapid and efficient retinal and neural processing capable of immediate target detection in the visual field. Damage to the nerve fibre layer or visual pathway might reduce the efficiency with which the visual system performs such analysis. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that patients with glaucoma are impaired on parallel search tasks, and that this would serve to distinguish glaucoma in early cases. METHODS: Three groups of observers (glaucoma patients, suspect and normal individuals) were examined, using compu

Amblyopic reading is crowded.

We measure acuity, crowding, and reading in amblyopic observers to answer four questions. (1) Is reading with the amblyopic eye impaired because of larger required letter size (i.e., worse acuity) or larger required spacing (i.e., worse crowding)? The size or spacing required to read at top speed is called "critical". For each eye of seven amblyopic observers and the preferred eyes of two normal observers, we measure reading rate as a function of the center-to-center spacing of the letters in central and peripheral vision. From these results, we estimate the critical spacing for reading. We al

An experimental investigation of the impact of biological and psychological causal explanations on anxious and depressed patients' perception of a person with panic disorder.

It is often suggested that biological accounts of the cause of mental health problems are beneficial in health education initiatives. However, an alternative view is that the idea of a diseased brain may result in stigma and therapeutic pessimism in sufferers, professionals and the public with implications for the perception of unpredictability and risk. Anxious and depressed patients (n=49) were randomly allocated to three experimental conditions. Prior to watching a video of a person suffering from panic disorder, participants were told either that research indicated that panic was caused by

Conceptual structure modulates anteromedial temporal involvement in processing verbally presented object properties.

Recent research has indicated that anteromedial temporal cortex (including the perirhinal cortex) may function as the endpoint of a hierarchically organized visual object-processing network providing the basis for fine-grained discrimination among objects. The present study examines whether the same system is involved in processing conceptual information when concepts, and their properties, are denoted by words. A lesion-behavior correlational study was conducted in which cortical damage in 21 brain-damaged patients was correlated with behavioral scores in a verbally presented property verific

Speeded detection and increased distraction in fear of spiders: evidence from eye movements.

Anxiety patients exhibit attentional biases toward threat, which have often been demonstrated as increased distractibility by threatening stimuli. In contrast, speeded detection of threat has rarely been shown. Therefore, the authors studied both phenomena in 3 versions of a visual search task while eye movements were recorded continuously. Spider-fearful individuals and nonanxious control participants participated in a target search task, an odd-one-out search task, and a category search task. Evidence for disorder-specific increased distraction by threat was found in all tasks, whereas speed

Neural mechanism for judging the appropriateness of facial affect.

Questions regarding the appropriateness of facial expressions in particular situations arise ubiquitously in everyday social interactions. To determine the appropriateness of facial affect, first of all, we should represent our own or the other's emotional state as induced by the social situation. Then, based on these representations, we should infer the possible affective response of the other person. In this study, we identified the brain mechanism mediating special types of social evaluative judgments of facial affect in which the internal reference is related to theory of mind (ToM) proces

Development of a fast method for determining psychophysical tuning curves.

Psychophysical tuning curves (PTCs) can be used to assess the frequency selectivity of the auditory system and to detect and delimit "dead regions" in the cochlea. However, the traditional method for determining PTCs takes too long for use in clinical practice. We evaluated a fast method for determining PTCs, using a band of noise that sweeps in centre frequency and a Békésy method to adjust the masker level required for threshold. The shapes of the PTCs were similar for the fast and traditional methods, for both normally hearing and hearing-impaired subjects. Rates of change of masker level o

High visibility safety apparel and nighttime conspicuity of pedestrians in work zones.

PROBLEM: Every year numerous occupational fatalities result from pedestrians being struck by motor vehicles intruding into work zones. METHOD: Attributes of retroreflective personal safety garments on pedestrian conspicuity at night were assessed in a field study. Using instrumented vehicles on a closed track, participants drove through simulated work zones attempting to detect pedestrians located in the work zones. RESULTS: Configuration of the retroreflective trim, trim color, placement in the work zone, and driver age significantly affected pedestrian conspicuity. Intensity and the amount

Diminished auditory mismatch fields in dyslexic adults.

Electroencephalographic studies have demonstrated smaller auditory responses to infrequent deviances of speech and nonspeech sounds in dyslexic than normal-reading subjects. We used a whole-scalp neuromagnetometer to study selectively reactivity of the auditory cortices to sound deviances in 8 dyslexic and 11 normal-reading adults. Within a monotonous sequence of 50-millisecond 1000 Hz binaural tones, tones of 920 and 1080 Hz occurred with 7% probability each. Magnetic mismatch fields, elicited by the stimulus deviances, were diminished in the left hemisphere of the dyslexic subjects. The resu

Spatial neglect in near and far space investigated by repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation.

Localized repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation was used to disrupt visuospatial perception in the near and far space of six healthy volunteer subjects. In addition to the baseline condition, they were stimulated over the right posterior parietal cortex, the right or left dorsal occipital cortex or the right ventral occipital cortex, during the brief presentation of a transected horizontal line. Subjects had to indicate whether the part of the line to the left or right of the transection appeared longer. The stimulus display was back-projected on a screen at a viewing distance of either

Attention shifts and anticipatory mechanisms in hyperactive children: an ERP study using the Posner paradigm.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to assess attentional, decisional, and motor processing stages during the performance of an attention shifting paradigm, both in normal children and children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHODS: We recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) and performance measures during a variant of the Posner paradigm in 13 control subjects and 24 ADHD children. Subjects responded with a spatially concordant motor response to left or right visual targets, which could be either preceded by a spatial cue ("valid" = same side; "invalid" = opposite

[What is a "left"?].

OBJECTIVE: Patients with right hemisphere syndrome may be labeled as "gauche" by the rehabilitation staff. This term corresponds to a variety of oddities in behavior or discourse. The aim of this study is to understand the coherence of these oddities with the classical elements of right hemisphere syndrome. MATERIAL: In this article, we present a detailed study of the discourse and the relation with others of a patient with severe left hemineglect, who was followed up for twelve months and did not exhibited any significant change in his symptomatology. METHODS: This study relies on the data

Dissociation of damage to spatial and luminance channels in early Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy manifested by the visual evoked potential.

Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is a maternally inherited disorder characterised by the acute or subacute loss of central vision, leading to severe optic atrophy. The occurrence of a demyelinating disease such as multiple sclerosis (MS) has been reported mainly in females with the mitochondrial DNA 11778 mutation. They had a poor visual outcome. To investigate the damage to the optic nerve in an early stage of LHON as compared with optic neuritis (ON), including MS, we examined patients by testing their pattern visual evoked potential (PVEP) and flash VEP (FVEP). The mean amplitude

Effects of chlorpromazine and diazepam on time estimation behavior and motivation in rats.

The effects of chlorpromazine and diazepam on performance of two operant tasks, one modelling time estimation and the other motivation to work for food reinforcers, were investigated in rats. These same tasks had been used previously in rhesus monkeys to assess the effects of chlorpromazine and diazepam. Rat performance of the time estimation task [temporal response differentiation (TRD)] was nearly identical to that previously described in monkeys. This performance similarity across these two species occurred despite slightly different methodologies. Performance of the motivation task [progre

Perceptual and attentional asymmetries in schizophrenia: further evidence for a left hemisphere deficit.

Increasing evidence suggests the presence of a lateralizing attentional deficit in schizophrenia. In the present study, 23 unmedicated patients with schizophrenia (mean age = 32.1 years) and 14 age- and sex-matched normal subjects were studied with the Global/Local Task to provide converging evidence for the presence of a left-hemisphere-associated attentional deficit in schizophrenia. This task is sensitive to the integrity of mechanisms involved in discriminating local and global elements of stimuli. Previous research has linked the discrimination of local targets to left hemispheric process

Contextual probability evaluation in autistic, receptive developmental language disorder, and control children: event-related brain potential evidence.

Compared 8- to 14-year-old children with either autism or receptive developmental language disorder (RDLD) to age- and IQ-matched normal controls in their ability to detect both frequent (p = .70) and infrequent (p = .30) randomly presented auditory stimuli under task and no-task conditions. Event-related brain potentials (ERPs), behavioral reaction times, and target detection accuracy rates were measured. Although the three groups of children performed in a similar manner on behavioral measures, only the children with autism demonstrated an abnormally small amplitude of the P3b, a component o

Performance of patients with early HIV-1 infection on the Stroop Task.

HIV-seropositive and seronegative control subjects performed a standard paper-and-pencil version and an experimental reaction time version of the Stroop Color-Word Naming Task. Results indicated that both symptomatic and asymptomatic HIV-positive subjects showed an exaggerated Stroop effect compared to controls, but this increase was only apparent on the RT version of the task. Analysis of components of the effect indicated that HIV-positive subjects showed increased inhibition compared to controls but normal facilitation. These results suggest that HIV-related cognitive slowing has an attenti

The maturation of the central auditory conduction in preterm infants until three months post term. II. The auditory brainstem responses (ABRs).

Auditory evoked brainstem responses (ABRs) were recorded in 65 preterm infants (serially in 55 of them), divided into 5 groups, according to their gestational age (GA). The recording sessions were performed at 8 conceptional age levels (CA = GA + chronological age), of which the last two were about 40 and 52 weeks CA. The number of recording sessions varied from one to seven. A full set of ABR latency and amplitude parameters was analyzed including peaks I, II, IIN, III, V and IIc, IIINc and Vc as well as some interpeak latency differences (IPLDs), and the amplitude ratios. The detectability o

Neuronal responses related to visual recognition.

To analyse the neural basis of long-term memory, recordings were made from single neurons in monkeys performing a visual recognition task of the type impaired in anterograde amnesia in man. Each visual stimulus was shown twice per day, once as novel, and after 0 to 17 other intervening items in the recognition task, on a second trial, as familiar, when the monkey could lick to obtain fruit juice if he recognized the stimulus correctly. At the anterior border of the thalamus, a population of neurons was found which responded to the stimuli only when they were familiar. The activity of these neu
