PURPOSE: In 1998, a modification of the macrostructure of the Frialit-2 implant in the cervical region was introduced to stabilize peri-implant bone. Limited data are available on the clinical effect of this modification. Therefore, the soft-tissue situation, marginal bone loss, and implant failure rate were analyzed after 4 years of clinical experience with the modified Frialit-2 Synchro implant.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 1998 to 2001, 190 cervically modified implants were placed and documented prospectively in 58 patients. Of these implants, 147 were placed in original jaw bone, 22 in are

The cross-sectional relationship between severe loss of periodontal attachment (LPA) and worsening immune status due to HIV infection was evaluated in 474 HIV-infected subjects (416 men, 58 women) aged 18 to 49 years who had been classified at stages 1 through 6 of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WR) Staging Classification System. LPA was measured at four sites per tooth using a manual probe; severe LPA was defined as > or = 1 site/subject exhibiting > or = 5 mm LPA. Severe LPA was found in 94 (20%) of the subjects. Modeling with multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that

The dynamics of bone turnover in the furcations of teeth treated with expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) membranes were evaluated using multiple fluorochrome labels in 6 male beagle dogs. Loss of attachment involving the furcation area was induced in the second, third, and fourth premolar teeth using silk ligatures. The resulting defects were treated with the use of mucoperiosteal flaps for access, debridement of the defects, and placement of ePTFE membranes covering the furcations of the second and fourth premolars (experimental teeth) while the third premolar received only debridement

Five hundred and fifty-five acid workers were examined between March 1962 and October 1964. One hundred and seventy-six (31·7%) were affected by industrial dental erosion at the first examinations. In 33 cases (6·0%) the dentine was affected. During the period of the survey, 66 (20·4%) of 324 workers examined more than once showed evidence that erosion was progressing. The prevalence and incidence of erosion were highest among battery formation workers, lower among picklers, and least among other processes covered by the survey. The age of workers did not appear to influence their susceptibili

Over the last few decades, many authors have investigated the effect of periodontal disease and treatment on pulpal status with controversial results. This study was conducted to verify whether periodontal disease in a deep intrabony defect and complex therapy, including aggressive root planing such as in periodontal regeneration, have an influence on tooth vitality. One hundred thirty-seven patients who fulfilled the requirements were included. The collected data did not support the need for "preventive" root canal treatment in severely compromised teeth that are planned to undergo periodonta

THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY was to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of a surgical technique in treating periodontal defects. The technique combined tetracycline treatment of a root planed root, grafting of the osseous defect with a demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft combined with tetracycline and the placement of a bioabsorbable matrix membrane, made of polylactic acid softened with citric acid ester. Thirty defects were treated in 27 patients. Statistically significant changes, as a result of the surgical procedure, were observed in marginal recession (mean: 0.5 mm), probing depth red

Aim One of the major difficulties in orthodontic treatment is the lengthy course of therapy, particularly in situations involving extractions. Hence, various methods for accelerating tooth movement rate had been devised. Flapless corticotomy is one of those methods. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of flapless laser corticotomy (FLC) compared to the conventional retraction (CR) method on the rate of canine retraction. Methods A split-mouth, randomized controlled trial included 56 canines from 14 patients (12 females and two males) with a mean age of 20.4 ± 2.5 years, who were complaini

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Extensive carious lesions and/or large preexisting restorations possibly contribute to crack formation, ultimately resulting in a fracture that may lead to the loss of a tooth cusp. Hence, preparation design strategy in conjunction with the restorative material selected could be influential in the occurrence of a cuspal fracture.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the fatigue behavior and fracture strength of maxillary premolars restored with direct composite and indirect ceramic inlays and overlays, with different preparation depths in the prese

BACKGROUND: This case study documents the application of connective tissue graft (CTG) combined with biologics on treating challenging gingival recession cases of mandibular anterior teeth caused by orthodontic tooth movement.
METHODS: Three patients presented for periodontal consultation due to gingival recession resulting from orthodontic treatment. The patients reported esthetic concerns and discomfort while brushing their teeth. The gingival defects were mainly localized to the mandibular incisors, with recession depths ranging from 1 to 5 mm and complicated by loss of papilla and a lack

PURPOSE: To compare three different types of custom-made root-analog immediate (RAI) dental implants.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with fractured and/or nonrestorable teeth with uncompromised periodontal ligaments were included in the study. The exclusion criteria were as follows: any uncontrolled systemic disease, bruxism, poor oral hygiene, active periodontal disease, and/or chronic marginal periodontitis. CBCT scans of the teeth were taken, and the datasets were used to reconstruct 3D models that were transferred to 3D modeling software to design the RAIs. Group 1 (GR1) consisted of zir

Background: Periodontal disease is a chronic multifactorial inflammatory condition caused by dysbiosis of the dental biofilm, leading to destruction of the connective tissue attachment, alveolar bone resorption, and potentially tooth loss. Non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT), involving subgingival instrumentation, aims to restore periodontal health by reducing the probing pocket depth (PPD) and bleeding on probing (BOP) and by improving the clinical attachment level (CAL). The adjunctive use of chemical agents, such as sodium hypochlorite/amino acids (NaOCl) and cross-linked hyaluronic aci…

AIMS: Chronic periodontitis is the sixth most prevalent disease worldwide and the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. With growing attention on the role of inflammatory and immune responses in its pathogenesis, there is an urgent need to evaluate host-modulatory agents. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) drugs play a crucial role in managing inflammatory conditions. This study examined the repercussions of long-term naproxen use in a periodontal inflammation model known for causing significant inflammation, disrupting epithelial and connective tissue attachment and leading to al…

BACKGROUND: Atrophy of the posterior maxilla as a consequence of tooth loss and sinus pneumatization is a frequent condition encountered in the clinical practice. Prosthetic rehabilitation with implants in these patients often requires some kind of bone regeneration procedure to increase the bone volume.
AIM: The aim of the present retrospective study is to analyze the survival and success rates of a series of implants placed in the atrophic posterior maxilla with a transcrestal osteotome procedure, without placing a bone grafting material.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 2006 to 2014, 36 dental…

One of the most popular treatment modalities in routine implantology practice is extraction followed by immediate or delayed implant insertion. Teeth removal alone is insufficient, particularly in the maxillary anterior region of the jaw. Patients may experience several issues after tooth extractions. Due to trauma and the loss of periodontal ligaments, post-extraction alveolar ridge resorption cannot be prevented. Atraumatic extraction, socket preservation, grafting, and implant placement immediately after the extraction are some of the procedures that are carried out to minimize or prevent t

Objectives: Magnetization transfer (MT) imaging exploits the interaction between bulk water protons and protons contained in macromolecules to induce signal changes through a special radiofrequency pulse. MT detects muscle damage in patients with neuromuscular conditions, such as limb-girdle muscular dystrophies or Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, which are characterized by progressive fiber loss and replacement by fatty tissue. In Pompe disease, in which there is, in addition, an accumulation of glycogen inside the muscle fibers, MT has not been tested yet. Our aim is to estimate MT ratio (MTR) i
