[Vulval hypoplasia in an alpaca cria - first case report in Germany].

This is the first German case report of an alpaca cria suffering from a congenital vulvahypoplasia. Symptoms, diagnostics and therapy are described. The 24-hours-old cria was referred to the hospital due to reduced general condition and colic. The existent vulvahypoplasia led to impaired urination, causing further complications such as urovagina and urinary stasis up to the renal pelvis. Surgical construction of the rima vulvae cured the cria. As indicated by several cases published on the clinical picture of vulvahypoplasia during recent years, this congenital deformation could become an incr

Phenazopyridine does not improve catheter discomfort following gynecologic surgery.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine if phenazopyridine improves pain in catheterized patients recovering from gynecologic surgery. STUDY DESIGN: This trial randomized 240 adult women, who were undergoing gynecologic surgery and requiring an indwelling Foley catheter, to placebo or phenazopyridine hydrochloride. Group assignment was masked by instillation of orange dye in the Foley bag of both groups. The primary outcome was the mean postoperative visual analog score (VAS). Secondary outcomes were pain medicine utilization and blinding efficacy. RESULTS: In all, 219 patients received study medi

A qualitative study exploring the emotional responses of female patients learning to perform clean intermittent self-catheterisation.

AIM: This paper is a report of a study exploring the lived experiences and emotional responses of female patients learning to perform clean intermittent self-catheterisation (CISC). BACKGROUND: There is general consensus that CISC should be considered in preference to in-dwelling catheterisation wherever feasible. Published literature has tended to focus on quality of life issues and technical and physical aspects. There has been less investigation into patients' initial perceptions of CISC and into their subsequent experiences of learning the technique. DESIGN: This qualitative study used a

Urine leakage in persons with spinal cord injury and using long-term Foley catheters: a simple solution.

STUDY DESIGN: To visualize residual urine in a bladder using a regular Foley catheter and then using a modified Foley catheter. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether a modified Foley catheter eliminates or reduces a catheter-associated deposition of residual urine around the balloon and whether this reduction eliminates catheter leakage. SETTINGS: A patient with chronic spinal cord injury using a Foley catheter and experiencing significant refractory urine leakage around the catheter. METHODS: The design of a Foley catheter and the way it drains lead to the constant presence of small amounts of

Ureteral stents and retrograde studies: a primer for the gynecologist.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review basic techniques and recent advances in endourology for the practicing gynecologist. RECENT FINDINGS: New ureteral stent designs are available to improve comfort and reduce some of the complications of indwelling ureteral stents. A large prospective study failed to show a significant benefit of prophylactic ureteral catheterization prior to major gynecological surgery to reduce the risk of ureteral injury. There is a shift in the management of some iatrogenic ureteric injuries from surgical reimplantation to more conservative endoscopic management by interventiona

[Intrakidney-catheter. Post pyelo-plasty complication].

One of the more severe urology complications are the forgetfulness of surgical instruments or materials (compress, gauzes...), with different types of complications. We present a male, operated of left hydronephosis. The post surgical catheter was retired five days after the anterograde urography, being all normal. But, in the new urography, practised six month after, a little fragment of catheter was discover, being necessary to do a new lobotomy and extraction. After revised the paediatric-urology bibliography, we note the very few articles about surgical complications, which is not the case

A proposed guideline for the urological management of patients with spinal cord injury.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a guideline for the urological management of patients with spinal cord injury (SCI). METHODS: The existing practice in the UK was evaluated by a series of expert meetings. Previous publications on the subject were evaluated, and the information synthesized to produce a proposed guideline. RESULTS: The literature review showed limited good-quality data. As a result of the process a series of research questions was produced, the answers to which would allow a guideline to be established based on good-quality evidence. In the absence of high-quality evidence, the guideline

Bluish discolouration of urine drainage tube and bag in a female patient with spina bifida, paraplegia, and suprapubic cystostomy.

We present a female patient with spina bifida, paraplegia, suprapubic cystostomy, and chronic constipation, who became anxious when she noticed a bluish discolouration of her urine drainage system. Urine microbiology revealed growth of Providencia stuartii and Staphylococcus aureus. There were no systemic features of infection and, therefore, antibiotics were not prescribed for asymptomatic bacteriuria. This patient was advised to change the urine bag every day, and was prescribed senna to facilitate bowel evacuation. She was reassured that bluish discolouration of the urine drainage tube and

[The use of the Stone Sweeper catheter for stone disease of the upper urinary tract].

OBJECTIVES: The treatment of patients with a great burden of stones is very difficult and often requires complex treatments including different kinds of surgery, associated in some cases with ureteral stents. METHODS: We present the case of a patient with complex renoureteral stone disease in whom we used the stone sweeper stent before SWL. The catheter is a 6.5 Fr radial expanding stent with small baskets, a special structure designed to extract small stones < 5mm. RESULTS: The placement and retrieval of bilateral stents were performed without complications, extracting several small stones

[Effects of ureteral stents on rabbit upper urinary tract urodynamics].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effects of ureteral stent placement on ureteral peristalsis and the time course of renal pelvic pressure changes. METHOD: Forty rabbits were randomized equally into 8 groups, including a control group without placement of ureteral stents. The other 7 groups received ureteral stent placement, which were retained for 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, and 12 weeks respectively. When the rabbits were bred for the specified time periods, ureteral peristalsis was observed and renal pelvic pressure measured. RESULT: The renal pelvic pressure was initially increased after the stent placeme

Pre-inoculation of urinary catheters with Escherichia coli 83972 inhibits catheter colonization by Enterococcus faecalis.

PURPOSE: The capacity of a preexisting coating of Escherichia coli 83972 to reduce catheter colonization by Enterococcus faecalis 210 was investigated. Enterococcus was chosen for these trials since it is a common urinary pathogen in patients with an indwelling urinary catheter. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Each experiment tested 3 growth conditions. Group 1 or E. coli plus Enterococcus catheters were exposed to E. coli 83972 for 24 hours and then to Enterococcus for 30 minutes. Group 2 or E. coli alone catheters were incubated in E. coli for 24 hours and then in sterile broth for 30 minutes. Group

Neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser ablation of a urethral web to relieve urinary outflow obstruction in a horse.

An 8-year-old Hanoverian gelding was examined because of urine dribbling and urethral obstruction. Mild proprioceptive deficits of the left hind limb were evident during neurologic examination. Ultrasonography per rectum revealed dilatation of the pelvic portion of the urethra. Endoscopy of the urethra revealed 2 webs of tissue: 1 was located 10 cm proximal to the external urethral opening; the other was located 65 cm proximal to the external urethral opening and prevented passage of the endoscope into the urinary bladder. The mass was ablated with a neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser, us
