Transthoracic and transoesophageal doppler echocardiography has become an essential tool for the diagnosis of infective endocarditis. It detects valvular vegetations and destructions, evaluates regurgitations, and appreciates haemodynamic tolerance. Recognition of endocarditis, early identification of high-risk patients, and detection of mechanical complications are the most accurate informations derived from this technique. A 53-year-old woman with non-Hodgkin lymphoma underwent an autologous bone marrow transplant (BMT). Incomplete reconstitution necessitated the use of a long-term central venous catheter. One year after BMT she presented with fever. Echocardiography revealed vegetations on the tricuspid valve. Gram-positive rods grown from blood cultures and catheter tip were identified as Oerskovia xanthineolytica. We report the first case of native valve endocarditis caused by this organism.

Vegetable dyes can be recommended to patients sensitized to oxidative dyes due to their low allergenic power. The most important of these is henna which is used as a reddishbrown hair dye in some parts of the world. Different pathologies have been described caused by henna but the incidence of contact dermatitis appears to be extremely rare. In the present paper, we describe the case of a 30-year-old woman who developed allergic contact dermatitis following application of henna, but who did not work with the dye professionally.

Infective endocarditis is a rare disease in infants. A 1-year-old boy with a large Candida albicans vegetation in the right atrium and superior vena cava was operated on successfully. During the newborn period he had had a right transverse colostomy for Hirschsprung's disease. Ten months later a subsequent rectosigmoidectomy and direct anastomosis were performed, but because of peritonitis that followed a leak at the site of the anastomosis parenteral nutrition was needed for 8 weeks. The probable source of Candida was an infected intravenous line.

A 66-year-old diabetic man presented with a bilobar pneumonia two months after aspiration of a chicken bone. Flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy demonstrated a mass in the bronchus intermedius. Histologic examination of endobronchial biopsy specimens revealed bone fragments, vegetable matter, and sulfur granules containing Actinomyces organisms. The patient responded to bronchoscopic removal of the foreign body and penicillin therapy. To our knowledge, the association of actinomycotic infection with an aspirated endobronchial foreign body has not previously been reported.

This paper shows the abundance, density and phenology of Sergentomyia minuta in Aragon (Northeast of Spain). Specimens were collected using sticky traps and sampling was carried out taking vegetation as ecologycal indicator. Differences in density were found among the studied areas related to ecologycal conditions. S. minuta showed its highest density in the coldest and rainiest area of Aragon (Central Pyrenees). These results are discussed with those got from other authors in different parts of the Mediterranean Basin.

We have determined the nucleotide sequence of a segment of chromosome III contained in the right part of the lambda PM3270 clone, for a total of 8824 bp. This sequence contains an unusual long open reading frame, YCR601, of 6501 bp that encodes for a protein of 2167 amino acids that show no homology with other known proteins. YCR601 was disrupted by internal deletion and insertion of LEU2 gene and is a non-essential gene, however, it is transcribed during vegetative growth yielding a polyadenylated mRNA of approximately 7 kb.

Reported epidemiological findings of the state of blonchopulmonary apparatus using a questionnaire, physical and functional examination of workers allowed to reveal chronic bronchitis, mainly of stage I and initial signs of byssinosis in those working at enterprises on processing of low-quality cotton growth. Results of hygienic evaluation of the dust factor dictate the necessity of extending the existing method during examination of enterprises engaged in processing of fibrous vegetal dusts. The necessity is also substantiated of perfecting medical screening of this category of workers.

Cervico-facial actinomycosis is a chronic bacterial disease caused by actinomycetes. The diagnosis may be made on the specific anatomo-pathological appearance of the granulomas and be confirmed by anaerobic culture of the germs. The peculiarities of consciousness disturbances in 289 patients with grave brain stroke were studied. Eight informative clinical syndromes, including the awakeness level, brain stem reflex functions as well as vegetative-visceral functions were described. Two levels and eleven corresponding to them phases of damaged consciousness were singled out. The scale of quantitative estimation of each phase of the consciousness damage was established for practical use by the computer method of plural step by step regression; dynamics of phases was shown also.

The authors report a case of a 51-year-old woman, living in the extreme west of the Santa Catarina State (South of Brazil, near the Argentine border), who presented a vegetating plaque in the foot, associated with inflammatory nodules in the leg, according to the sporotrichoid form of chromoblastomycosis, with a histologic pattern distinct from the commonly observed. In culture the fungus produced exclusively and repeatidly colonies of a Cladosporium type. More detailed studies of the fungus made by Dante Borelli of Venezuela, proved it to be the type of a new species of Dematiaceous mould.

A special questionnaire chart was used to analyse the "structure" of the cardiac pain syndrome in 77 patients with ischaemic heart disease and atypical pains: protracted attacks were recorded in 53 (out of them 13 had Prinzmetall angina pectoris), 11 had attacks with a vegetative crisis background. In 6 patients localization of pains was atypical, in 15 the pains bore the character of cardialgia. To avoid diagnostic errors the physician must analyze thoroughly subjective feelings of the patient with pains in the heart.

In comparison with 27 similar cases, sampled from literature, 4 observations of amnesic episodes in migraine are presented and discussed. These disturbances known as so-called "Migranedammerattacken" seem to be identical with transient global amnesia in all respects. In most of cases, they occur as migraine-precursors or - equivalents. Headache, vegetative und neurological symptoms are frequent but not necessary companions. It is proposed to look for migraine disposition in all cases of transient global amnesia.
