Atypical neuropsychological profile in a boy with 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome.

In this article the general and specific cognitive impairments of the boy R.H. with a de novo deletion 22q11.2 are described. His full-scale IQ was 73, and he obtained only slightly better verbal than non-verbal subtest scores. Neuropsychological assessment revealed specific impairments in perceptual categorization of objects presented suboptimal, matching of unfamiliar faces, and verbal learning and memory. In contrast, he performed in accordance with his intelligence level on other visual perceptual tasks, on non-verbal learning and memory tasks, and on attention tasks. Voxel-wise statistica

Algorithm for interpreting the results of frequency doubling perimetry.

PURPOSE: To evaluate an algorithm for the identification of glaucomatous visual field defects with the screening mode of frequency doubling technology. METHODS: Screening-mode frequency doubling technology and Swedish interactive threshold algorithm perimetry were performed on 137 of 150 consecutive patients referred to a glaucoma specialist. We created an algorithm for the frequency doubling technology that gave increased importance to both more severe defects and defects closer to fixation. These values were then compared with the results of the Swedish interactive threshold algorithm visua

Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma Is Associated with Short-Term Memory Decline and Dementia in Individuals of African Ancestry.

Background: Over the last decade, studies have suggested that primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) may be associated with cognitive impairment and dementia, as both pathologies are age-related neurodegenerative processes. It remains unclear to what extent neurodegeneration in POAG extends to other neurological functions beyond vision, such as cognition. This follow-up study examined the potential association between POAG and cognitive decline in an African ancestry population. Methods: The Telephone-Montreal Cognitive Assessment (T-MoCA) was administered to POAG cases and controls previously enr

Tolosa-Hunt Syndrome as the Initial Presentation of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.

Tolosa-Hunt syndrome (THS), also known as painful ophthalmoplegia, recurrent ophthalmoplegia, or ophthalmoplegia syndrome, is described as severe and unilateral peri-orbital headaches associated with painful and restricted eye movements. THS is an uncommon disorder due to granulomatous inflammation of the cavernous sinus. Although THS is primarily idiopathic, it has rarely been reported in association with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This case report describes a unique case of THS presenting as the initial manifestation of SLE, a multi-system autoimmune disease. We present a detailed c

The "Bubble Test" in the Arthroscopic Diagnosis of Triangular Fibrocartilage Central Lesion: Description and Relevance to Treatment.

Background  Ulnarly sided wrist pain is a common and challenging symptom. Arthroscopy has become a safe and effective tool for the correct diagnosis and treatment, proving to be better than all other clinical and imaging diagnostic methods. Some tests have been described for the diagnosis of triangular fibrocartilage (TFC) lesions, such as the trampoline test for peripheral lesions and the hook, ghost, and suction tests for foveal detachments. In tears at the disc level, when they affect all layers of the TFC (complete lesion) at the same point, testing with the probe will usually suffice for

Schirmer tear test and strip meniscometry in healthy cats.

BACKGROUND: The surface of the eye is covered by the preocular tear film, which is critical for maintaining a normal, healthy, visual, and comfortable vision. The Schirmer tear test (STT) and, more recently, strip meniscometry (SM) are used to evaluate tear production. AIM: To establish the normal values for STT and SM in healthy cats and to discover the correlation between these tests. METHODS: A total of 25 mixed breed cats, aging from 8 months to 13 years of both genders (10 females and 15 males) were included in the study. All the cats were assigned to the study as being both clinically

Diagnostic Errors in Initial Misdiagnosis of Optic Nerve Sheath Meningiomas.

IMPORTANCE: Diagnostic errors can lead to the initial misdiagnosis of optic nerve sheath meningiomas (ONSM), which can lead to vision loss. OBJECTIVE: To identify factors contributing to the initial misdiagnosis of ONSM. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: We retrospectively reviewed 35 of 39 patients with unilateral ONSM (89.7%) who were seen in the tertiary neuro-ophthalmology practice at Emory University School of Medicine between January 2002 and March 2017. The Diagnosis Error Evaluation and Research taxonomy tool was applied to cases with missed/delayed diagnoses. EXPOSURES: Evaluation

Vision and Vision-Related Measures in Progressive Multiple Sclerosis.

Background: Over the last few years there has been growing interest in use of visual measures as useful tools for multiple sclerosis (MS) prognosis and tracking. Optic neuritis (ON) being a prevalent and often-presenting symptom of the disease, as well as the high occurrence rate of posterior visual system damage independent of ON (optic radiation lesions), make the visual system a prime candidate for such endeavors. However, while the visual system makes for a convenient model in early stages of MS, processes which may be true in those stages may drastically change as the disease progresses,

[Management and treatment difficulties of multi-drug resistant pulmonary tuberculosis in a pediatric case].

Tuberculosis continues to be a major health problem worldwide. Multidrug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) infection that occurs in childhood is caused by adult MDR-TB agents which are in circulation and resistant to primary drugs. In this case report a 17-month-old child with MDR-TB who was cured after a 24-month therapy regimen was presented. Physical examination of a 17-month-old girl admitted to the hospital with the cause of recurrent pneumonia revealed a rubbery lymphadenopathy less than 2 cm in the right upper cervical region. Crepitant rales were detected in the right basal on auscultati

The New Zealand 1986 very low birth weight cohort as young adults: mapping the road ahead.

BACKGROUND: Very low birth weight (less than 1500 g) is associated with increased morbidity and costs of health care in childhood. Emerging evidence suggests these infants face a range of health and social problems as young adults. We studied all New Zealand very low birth weight infants born in 1986 (when 58% were exposed to antenatal corticosteroids) in infancy, with later follow-up at 7 to 8 years and 23 to 24 years. We now aim to assess the cohort at 26-28 years compared with controls. METHODS/DESIGN: The case sample will comprise a minimum of 250 members of the 1986 New Zealand national

Oxymetazoline and Blepharoptosis: A Case Series and Proposed Treatment Algorithm.

Blepharoptosis, characterized by drooping upper eyelids, affects vision and daily life. Traditional management includes observation, pharmacological treatments, and surgery, though not all cases necessitate surgical intervention. Pharmacologic treatments such as apraclonidine and phenylephrine eyedrops have been used but are limited by significant adverse effects, including pupil dilation and ocular/systemic side effects. Recently, oxymetazoline ophthalmic solution, approved by the FDA in 2020, has emerged as a promising alternative, showing improvement in visual field and eyelid elevation wit
