Fascial structures and autonomic nerves in the female pelvis: a study using macroscopic slices and their corresponding histology.

We investigated the topographical anatomy of the pelvic fasciae and autonomic nerves using macroscopic slices of five decalcified female pelves. The lateral aspect of the supravaginal cervix uteri and superior-most vagina issued abundant thick fiber bundles. These visceral fibrous tissues extended dorsolaterally, joined another fibrous tissue from the rectum (the actual lateral ligament of the rectum) and attached to the parietal fibrous tissues at and around the sciatic foramina (i.e. the sacrospinous ligament, thick fasciae of the coccygeus and piriformis and dorsal end of the covering fasci

[A case of Guillain-Barré syndrome complicated with severe autonomic failure and presented elevated anti-GD1b and anti-GQ1b antibody].

We report a 30-year-old woman who presented symptoms of oropharyngeal palsy and glove-stocking type sensory disturbance followed by acute cerebellar ataxia, the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH), gastroenteric symptoms, urinary disturbance and orthostatic hypotension. She did not have any preceding infection. She was diagnosed as having Guillain-Barré syndrome with autonomic failure. Autonomic failure such as sinus tachycardia and nocturnal ventricular arrhythmia in addition to motor and sensory dysfunction was palliated by immunoadsorption. During the course

[Respiratory function impairment in patients with Parkinson's disease--a consideration on the possible pathogenetic relation to autonomic dysfunction].

To investigate the characteristics and clinical significance of respiratory function in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), we studied 38 patients (male, 19; female, 19: mean age, 65.5 years: mean duration of disease, 6.7 years) who had no history of respiratory disease and smoking. Fifty three non-respiratory disease subjects (male, 26; female, 27: mean age, 67.6 years) were served as age-matched control. We measured spirometry and maximal expiratory flow-volume curve in all patients, and analyzed the relations between respiratory function variables and clinical profiles. The clinical dis

Twenty-four-hour heart rate variability to assess autonomic function in Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the autonomic dysfunction in Parkinson's disease patients by means of a 24-h heart rate variability (HRV) method. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirteen patients with a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease were compared with 13 age-matched healthy persons (control group). The 13 patients had a mean age of 70.5 years, and mean disease duration of 10.9 years. The autonomic function was evaluated by HRV analysis using a continuous 24-h ECG. The parameters of SDNN (standard deviation of the normal-to-normal intervals between adjacent QRS complexes), of LF (power in low frequency) and

The role of botulinus toxin type A in treatment--with special reference to children.

Although botulinum toxin A was first introduced to treat strabismus and blepherospasm it is now used in an increasing number of conditions, many in the field of pediatrics. Its action results from a prevention of the release of acetylcholine from nerve terminals. A number of studies recording the effects of the toxin in the treatment of spastic cerebral palsy are reviewed, and although these can be criticized, there seems to be no doubt that it can be of benefit. It is few side effects, but it may reveal an underlying weakness. Other disadvantages are its cost and the need for repeated injecti

[Harlequin syndrome].

Harlequin syndrome is an autonomic syndrome of heat, emotion and exercise induced flushing and sweating limited to one side of the face in combination with impairment of sweating and flushing on the contralateral side, Two women aged 32 and 39 years displayed this syndrome. In one patient no other neurological symptoms were found; MRI of cervicothoracic spine failed to disclose a structural lesion. The second patient had four years before presented with a Horner's syndrome on the contralateral side, where MRI now disclosed a tumour located in the paravertebral thoracic region at the apex of th

Cardiac autonomic function during sleep in several neuropsychiatric disorders.

Cardiac autonomic activity during sleep is only very slightly influenced by the emotional state of the patient and, unlike some of the traditional tests of autonomic function, may be studied in all patients. In an attempt to evaluate autonomic function in patients with different neuropsychiatric disorders, two different methods of quantifying the changes in sympathetic and parasympathetic cardiac control during sleep were used: (1) the ratios of consecutive R-wave (R-R) intervals before and after spontaneous body movements; (2) spectral analysis of R-R intervals. It was found that more than on

Gastrointestinal autonomic nerve tumor of the esophagus. A clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical, ultrastructural study of a case and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal autonomic nerve (GAN) tumor is a rare tumor that is supposed to originate from the enteric autonomic plexus. The tumor is a subgroup of the gastrointestinal stromal tumor that usually occurs in the stomach and small intestine. METHODS: An intramural tumor located in the upper third of the esophagus of a 62-year-old Chinese female is reported. The tumor was removed by a three-phased esophagogastrectomy because of its large size. The tumor measured 6.5 cm x 5 cm x 4 cm. Its tissues were sampled, examined by light microscopy, immunohistochemistry, and electron micros

Stimulation of endocrine, but not exocrine, pancreatic secretion during 2-deoxy-D-glucose-induced neuroglycopenia in the conscious pig.

The effects of autonomic nervous activation, initiated by 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG)-induced neuroglycopenia, or endocrine and exocrine pancreatic secretion were investigated in the conscious pig. Pigs were surgically fitted with permanent pancreatic duct and duodenal reentrant cannulas, allowing long-term sampling of pancreatic juice, and a jugular vein catheter for blood sampling and infusion of 2-DG. 2-DG was administered as a 5-min intravenous infusion at three dose levels to conscious pigs. 2-DG (400 mg/kg) was found to elevate plasma glucagon and insulin levels (p < 0.01). In contrast, exo

[Further study of Schellong testing in 152 young females].

Orthostatic dysregulation (OD) generally implies a systemic condition indicating poor circulatory function resulting from autonomic imbalance, which usually appears in a rather young population at or around puberty, predominantly in females. This condition can be recognized from the results of a questionnaire which has been proposed and prepared by the Pediatric OD Study Group of Japan as diagnostic criteria for OD. Schellong testing has also been developed as a screening method to determine OD or orthostatic hypotension. We carried out a survey and analyzed data collected with the questionnai

Dorsal sympathectomy and management of thoracic outlet syndrome with VATS.

Dorsal sympathectomy and the management of the thoracic outlet syndrome have been considerably improved with the use of video assistance because it affords both magnification and an improved light system. Two techniques of video assistance were employed in the group of patients described here. One involved the sympathectomy done through three ports using standard video-assisted thoracic surgical methods. The second technique involved a transaxillary incision with removal of the first rib using video-assistance magnification and light, operating either directly or secondarily while visualizing

[Asthenic-autonomic disorders in the decompensation phase of residual organic brain conditions].

The paper provides characteristics of asthenic and vegetative-vascular defects in decompensation of residual organic cerebral insufficiency. The defects were examined vegetologically with the help of photoplethysmography, thermovisiography, the test of the vegetative, psychological, exercise performance. Cutaneous-galvanic reflex, attention, memory, asthenia severity were also evaluated. The data obtained by the authors are important for making differential diagnosis of cerebrogenic with psychogenic asthenia in neurosis which allows differential therapy of asthenia symptoms depending on the et

[Stress and the cardiovascular system].

A variety of evidence shows that stress contributes to a more or less sustained elevation of blood pressure, as well as to the triggering and aggravation of cardiovascular pathology, especially coronary heart disease. Experimentally induced changes, that may be pathogenic due to their duration or repetition, can be produced in hemodynamics, lipid metabolism, or hemostasis. High blood pressure, vascular heredity, but also a trend to inhibition of action, seem to be responsible for hyperreactivity to stress. Hypertensives are particularly reactive to active stresses related to controlable situat

The effects of stress, emotion, and behavior on the heart.

The relationships between emotional status, neurohormonal control and the cardiovascular function are reviewed. In the first part of this paper, we reviewed (1) the pathways between brain and heart, physiology of the defense reaction and the role of the autonomic nervous system in the mediation of the effects of stress; (2) the cardiac manifestations of emotional stress, and (3) the role of stress and the influence of circadian variations in the occurrence and development of myocardial ischemia, myocardial infarction and sudden death. In the second part, we discussed the relationship between b…

Control of nausea and autonomic dysfunction with terfenadine, a peripherally acting antihistamine.

Terfenadine (Seldane) was administered to 14 male subjects in a randomized, double-blinded, and crossed-over design to assess the efficacy of this peripherally active antihistamine as an anti-motion sickness drug. Terfenadine possesses practically no central side effects. A Staircase Profile Test was administered 4 h following placebo or a single oral dose of terfenadine (300 mg). The study revealed a statistically significant therapeutic effect from terfenadine (p less than 0.05). This led us to conclude that because the drug does not or only poorly crosses the blood-brain barrier, a selectiv

Autonomic hyperreflexia in spinal cord injury patient during percutaneous nephrolithotomy for renal stone: a case report.

Autonomic hyperreflexia or autonomic dysreflexia is a syndrome seen in approximately 85% of all quadriplegic patients and constitutes the only medical emergency related to spinal cord injury. We report on a paraplegic patient with a C5 to C7 spinal cord injury who suffered autonomic hyperreflexia during percutaneous nephrolithotomy for a right renal stone. The reflex-induced hypertension subsided with termination of the operation, and administration of an alpha and beta-adrenergic blocking agent (labelatol hydrochloride). The stone was removed successfully by pyelolithotomy with the patient un
