OBJECTIVE: Body checking is considered a behavioral manifestation of the overevaluation of shape and weight, which is characteristic of patients with eating disorders. We examined the initial psychometric properties of the Body Checking Questionnaire (BCQ) and the frequency and nature of body checking behaviors in obese men and women with binge eating disorder (BED).
METHOD: Participants were a consecutive series of 73 (22 men, 51 women) treatment-seeking obese adults who met research criteria for BED as defined in the 4th ed. of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-

IMPORTANCE: Poor nutrition and growth in childhood have short-term and long-term consequences, so understanding the timing of the onset of an impaired nutritional status is crucial for diagnosing and treating inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) at its earliest stage.
OBJECTIVE: To assess anthropometric trajectories before a pediatric diagnosis of IBD and growth recovery after diagnosis.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based cohort study included children born in Denmark from January 1, 1997, through December 31, 2015, with weight and length or height measurements at birth and

Epilepsy is frequently associated with altered anthropometric outcomes, including height, weight, and body mass index (BMI). However, the causal relationship between epilepsy and these traits remains uncertain. This Mendelian randomization (MR) study aimed to investigate the causal effects of epilepsy and its subtypes on anthropometric traits, including height, weight, BMI, idiopathic short stature, constitutional tall stature, and obesity. A 2-sample MR analysis was conducted using genetic instruments derived from genome-wide association studies. Genetic instruments for epilepsy phenotypes we

BACKGROUND: This cross-sectional study aims to investigate the flexible flatfoot (FFF) prevalence and related factors in school-aged children.
METHODS: A total of 1059 children aged 6-13 years were included. Dynamic footprints according to the FootScan system were collected from both feet. The relationship of FFF with age, gender, side, and body mass index (BMI) was investigated.
RESULTS: FFF percentage decreased from 39.5% at 6 years to 11.8% at 12 years and reached a plateau at 12-13 years. Overweight (OR 1.35, 95%CI 1.03-1.77, P = 0.03) and obese (OR 2.43, 95%CI 1.81-3.26, P<0.01) showed

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists (GnRHa) have been widely used for decades to treat patients with central precocious puberty (CPP). Several studies have investigated changes in body composition in patients with CPP following GnRHa treatment, but the results are inconsistent. The aim of this study was to investigate changes in body mass index (BMI) in children treated with GnRHa for 2 years. We also assessed whether BMI affects treatment outcomes. This study included 383 girls (214 girls with central precocious puberty and 169 girls who underwent early puberty) treated with depot leuprol

The excessive influence of shape or weight on self-evaluation--referred to as overvaluation--is considered by some a central feature across eating disorders but is not a diagnostic requirement for binge eating disorder (BED). This study examined shape/weight overvaluation in 399 consecutive patients with BED. Participants completed semistructured interviews, including the Eating Disorder Examination (EDE; C. G. Fairburn & Z. Cooper, 1993) and several self-report measures. Shape/weight overvaluation was unrelated to body mass index (BMI) but was strongly associated with measures of eating-relat

Among men there is epidemiological evidence for an association between obesity and increased risk of renal cell carcinoma, colon cancer and adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus. The evidence for other cancer sites remains inconsistent. We conducted a large population-based, multi-site, case-control study of environmental causes of cancer among males in Montreal, Canada. Among the many questionnaire items collected by interview were height and usual weight. We compared height, weight and body mass index (BMI) among individuals with 11 different cancer types (combined N=3016) and population-based co

The prevalence of obesity in adolescents is increasing rapidly. Obesity is associated with insulin resistance, which increases the risk for type 2 diabetes. We investigated insulin resistance in obese adolescents and its relationship to acanthosis nigricans. Height, weight and body mass index (BMI) were measured and each was expressed as a standard deviation score (SDS) based on national growth standards. Insulin resistance was estimated by using the homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-IR) score, calculated as fasting insulin (microU/mL) x fasting glucose (mmol/L)/22.5. Obese adolescents had si

In phocid seals, the transition to nutritional independence is abrupt, with females abandoning their offspring after weaning and returning to sea. We hypothesized that body size at weaning may play an important role in the nature of this transition. We studied the changes in body composition and water flux of newly weaning harbour seals over the first 4-6 wk postweaning. Thirty-three pups were dosed with deuterium oxide to estimate total body water (TBW) and a subset of 24 was dosed twice to estimate changes in body composition and water flux. All pups lost body mass over the study period, but

BACKGROUND: Poor growth and delayed maturation in children with sickle cell disease (SCD) may be due, in part, to mild zinc deficiency.
OBJECTIVE: The objective was to determine the effects of zinc supplementation on growth and body composition in children with SCD.
DESIGN: Forty-two prepubertal children (20 girls and 22 boys) aged 4-10 y with SCD-SS were randomly assigned to receive 10 mg elemental Zn/d in cherry syrup (zinc group) or cherry syrup alone (control group). The 2 groups were stratified by sex and initial height status. Dietary intakes were evaluated and anthropometric, high-pre

OBJECTIVES: To determine the timing, magnitude and duration of the pubertal spurt for short normal and average height girls, to compare these with Tanner's standard and to investigate predictors of pubertal growth.
METHODS: The growth of 46 short normal and 55 control girls, identified at school entry, was monitored throughout puberty. Height and weight were measured at 6-month intervals from which body mass index (BMI) was derived. Annual velocities were calculated and used to estimate the age and magnitude of peak height velocity (PHV). Age of menarche was recorded to the nearest month. Par

OBJECTIVE: The association between obesity and different diseases is well documented, especially with non-insulin dependent diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. To prevent proliferation of these and other obesity-related diseases, and to plan adequate health education programmes for the control of obesity, base-line data are required on the prevalence of this condition. The present study is concerned with this need and its purpose is the determination of the prevalence of obesity among adult Kuwaitis.
METHOD: A cross-section of 3435 Kuwaiti adults forms the study sample. Corpulence was a

Early deficits in nutritional status that might require specific treatment and early response to nutritional therapy were studied longitudinally in 25 infants with cystic fibrosis (CF) diagnosed by neonatal screening, using anthropometric and research body composition methodology, and evaluation of pancreatic function. At the time of confirmed diagnosis (mean 5.4 weeks), body mass, length, total body fat (TBF), and total body potassium (TBK) were all significantly reduced. Following diagnosis and commencement of therapy there was a normalization of weight, length, and TBK by 6-12 months of age
