This paper presents analysis and design of a radio frequency power and data link for a novel Bone Conduction Implant (BCI) system. Patients with conductive and mixed hearing loss and single-sided deafness can be rehabilitated by bone-anchored hearing aids (BAHA). Whereas the conventional hearing aids transmit sound to the tympanic membrane via air conduction, the BAHA transmits sound via vibrations through the skull directly to the cochlea. It uses a titanium screw that penetrates the skin and needs life-long daily care; it may cause skin infection and redness. The BCI is developed as an alter

INTRODUCTION: Various techniques have been described for posterior atlantoaxial fusion. Sublaminar passage of the wire/cable is cumbersome with a risk of spinal cord injury. Packing morselized bone grafts into the C1-2 facet joints may be difficult and it may cause massive bleeding and neuropathic pain or posterior scalp numbness postoperatively. We introduce a modified method by using C1-2 screw-rod fixation (SRF) to compress a structural iliac bone graft between the posterior elements of C1 and C2 without supplemental wiring construct.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess the influence of cusp inclination on stress distribution in implant-supported prostheses by 3D finite element method.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three-dimensional models were created to simulate a mandibular bone section with an implant (3.75 mm diameter x 10 mm length) and crown by means of a 3D scanner and 3D CAD software. A screw-retained single crown was simulated using three cusp inclinations (10 degrees, 20 degrees, 30 degrees). The 3D models (model 10d, model 20d, and model 30d) were transferred to the finite element program NeiNastran 9.0 to ge

Pathological fractures of the distal tibia as a result of cancer metastases are rare. In particular, the management of intraarticular fractures of the distal tibia has not been established. In this article, we present a case of pathological intraarticular fracture with an extensive bone defect of the distal tibia that was successfully treated by limb salvage with a locked intramedullary nail and pirarubicin-impregnated methylmethacrylate. A 52-year-old patient with duodenal cancer presented with a painful swelling in the left crus. The condition was diagnosed as an impending pathological fract

Class III malocclusion due to a retrognathic maxilla is common in patients with cleft lip and palate. Skeletally anchored maxillary protraction using screw-anchored mini-plates combined with intraoral elastics has shown promising results in achieving orthopedic changes and maintaining the outcome until the completion of the growth. This case report presents the course of treatment in a patient with unilateral cleft lip and palate and multiple congenitally missing teeth treated with bone-anchored maxillary protraction until the end of growth. Four mini-plates (Bollard plates) were used during c

Arthroscopic techniques for anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) reconstruction have been developed in recent years. Allograft tendons are often used in ATFL reconstruction, and surgical indications include an insufficiently strong ligament remnant, high-demand activities, repeated ankle sprains, and revision cases. We describe a socket-anchor technique for talar tunnel creation: A 10-mm-deep bone tunnel (socket) is created along a previously located guidewire at the ATFL talar footprint; an absorbable suture anchor is inserted into the end of the socket; and the graft is tied to the suture, p

Coracoid fractures are an uncommon injury and typically occur in the setting of high-energy trauma. Isolated injury to the coracoid is rare; therefore, a high suspicion for concomitant shoulder injuries should exist. These associated injuries have been shown to be acromioclavicular dislocations, clavicular and acromial fractures, scapular spine fractures, rotator cuff tears, and anterior shoulder dislocations. Although most of these shoulder injuries respond to nonsurgical treatment, there are case reports and literature reviews that present more complicated injuries requiring surgical interve

BACKGROUND: Traumatic loss of talus during a compound injury of ankle is an unusual injury.
OBJECTIVE: We report a 55 years old woman who sustained an open ankle injury with complete extrusion of talus and loss at the injury site.
METHOD: A tricortical bone graft was obtained from iliac crest and talar dimensions carved with 5 cm length and 3 cm height given by buttressing fibular graft between them. These grafts are made in the shape of talus by fixing them together with cortical screw and binding them together with Ethibond No. 5. By anterior approach ankle was opened and talar graft was p

The authors report the cases of four patients in whom they diagnosed an extremely rare and hitherto unreported clinical condition-unilateral hypertrophy of the C-1 lateral mass causing symptomatic cord compression. All patients presented with long-standing torticollis and progressive myelopathy. Three patients underwent posterior decompressive surgery and one underwent resection of the part of the lateral mass invading into the spinal canal and subsequent atlantoaxial plate and screw fixation. Clinical improvement of varying degrees occurred in all cases following surgery. The clinical recover

Modern concepts of treating thoracic diseases suggest more and more the use of minimally invasive thoracoscopic techniques to reduce morbidity and save costs. For treatment of specific lesions at the thoracic spine, several thoracoscopic procedures have been performed successfully. The present report examines the feasibility of thoracoscopic osteosynthesis in two patients with ventral hyperextension injuries and anterior instability of the thoracic spine. After initial correction of the anatomical deformity, autologous bone was harvested from the anterior iliac crest. Using a ventral, thoracos

BACKGROUND: Surgeons performing the induced membrane technique (IMT) often incorporate antibiotics into the spacer at the first stage of the surgical procedure to prevent or treat infection. However, the effect of antibiotic use on subsequent bone healing is not clear. This study aimed to investigate if antibiotic-impregnated spacers impact subsequent bone healing in a rat model of the IMT.
METHODS: Inbred male rats (Fischer 344) were randomly divided into 3 groups according to the antibiotic dose in the spacer: (1) control (no antibiotics), (2) low-dose (1.2 g tobramycin and 1.0 g vancomycin

BACKGROUND: Proximal femur fractures in adolescents are rare and usually occur following high-energy trauma. When such injuries result from minimal trauma, they demand careful evaluation of skeletal integrity. This case highlights how social withdrawal, prolonged immobilization, and malnutrition can lead to reversible bone fragility and an unusual fracture pattern in a young patient.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 14-year-old boy of Danish ethnicity with no prior somatic disease sustained an intertrochanteric femur fracture after falling from a floor bed of approximately one meter. For the preceding tw

Lumbar spondylolysis is a fatigue fracture that occurs most frequently in middle and high school athletes. Conservative treatment is the first choice when the fracture is fresh. Surgical treatment of lumbar spondylolysis is often reported for pseudarthrosis cases, but surgery for cases of fresh fractures is rare. We report a case of a 16-year-old male, high jump athlete, with recurrent non-pseudoarthorotic lumbar spondylolysis. He presented to our hospital with a chief complaint of back pain, and was diagnosed as right L5, pre-lysis-stage lumbar spondylolysis. After 3 months of conservative tr

The primary objective of this study was to evaluate randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that have reported the effects of teriparatide on bone-healing in osteoporotic hip and pelvic bone fractures to determine the efficacy of teriparatide in lowering the rate of treatment failure. A total of 2,809 studies were identified using a comprehensive literature search (MEDLINE [n=1,061], Embase [n=1,395], and Cochrane Library n=353]). Five RCTs were included in the final analysis. Treatment failure rates at the last follow-up of osteoporotic hip and pelvic bone fractures between the teriparatide and c

Experimental studies on the effect of micromotion on bone healing around implants are frequently conducted in long bones. In order to more closely reflect the anatomical and clinical environments around dental implants, and eventually be able to experimentally address load-management issues, we have developed a system that allows initial stabilization, protection from external forces, and controlled axial loading of implants. Screw-shaped implants were placed on the edentulous ridge in rat maxillae. Three loading regimens were applied to validate the system; case A no loading (unloaded implant
