OBJECTIVES: To use finite element (FE) modeling and in vivo optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging to explore the effect of ciliary muscle traction on optic nerve head (ONH) deformation during accommodation.
METHODS: We developed a FE model to mimic the ciliary muscle traction during accommodation, and varied the stiffness of the sclera, choroid, Bruch's membrane (BM), prelaminar neural tissue and lamina cribrosa (LC) to assess their effects on accommodation-induced ONH strains. To validate the FE model, OCT images of the right eyes' ONHs from 20 subjects (25 ± 1.5 years, range: 24-28 yea

INTRODUCTION: Cataract surgery has been reported to have a reducing effect on intraocular pressure (IOP) in glaucomatous and non-glaucomatous eyes. This effect seems to be more noticeable in eyes with narrow angles (NAs) than in eyes with open angles (OAs). Decrease in IOP may be a result of the increase in anterior chamber angle and Schlemm canal (SC) after cataract surgery. The purpose of this paper was to evaluate the relationship between Schlemm canal-cross-sectional area (SC-CSA) changes and trabecular meshwork, ciliary muscle changes after cataract surgery and the difference in non-glauc

Vascular dynamics in the eyes and brain under microgravity have gained attention due to the Spaceflight-Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome (SANS). We explored how changes in gravitational vectors, circadian rhythm, and sleep regulate cerebral blood flow (CBF) and eye perfusion. Hypothesizing that the eye lacks the capacity to autoregulate, we expected increases in blood flow or volume to drive choroidal engorgement in SANS, and circadian and sleep-related changes to further influence these dynamics. Lower-body negative pressure (LBNP) was investigated as a countermeasure for posterior ciliary ar

We describe a case of serous retinal detachment (SRD) with ciliochoroidal detachment (CCD) that persisted for 2 years and 7 months after minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS). A 71-year-old woman with primary open angle glaucoma and cataracts had a central corneal thickness of 489 μm/492 μm and an ocular axis length of 24.05 mm/24.30 mm. She underwent phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation in the right eye (OD), along with goniosynechialysis and microhook ab interno trabeculotomy. Postoperative intraocular pressure was 4-6 mm Hg in the OD. Five months later, SRD was observe
